  1. My easygps only saves data in a .loc format. I have opened this file with notepad, but it is not in a text format. What am I doing wrong?

  3. It would be nice if a standard database was available. The cryptic code produced by easygps does not match the data in Terrain Navigator or Streets. An Excel or DBM format is what I am looking for.

  5. It is hard enough to maintain a cache with interesting items and now you want to introduce geocards? Have you guys seen pictures posted by geocachers? We are not an attractive group. Who wants a box full of pictures of ugly people?
  6. I have hooked two co-workers. Oddly they do not log their finds online or in the logbooks. I am not sure they really search that often, but I know they both bought GPS units. I got my sister hooked. She is shopping for a GPS. She asked me why most caches were in remote locations. I told her it was probably, because most folks bought a GPS to navigate in the wilderness or on water, before geocaching was invented. I bought mine before SA was turned off.
  7. I have been to one cache that had entries from noncachers. It was located in a historical landmark. I have searched for two other caches that were missing. Both of these were located at significant areas of interest to the general public. Behind a tree is a better location than in the cave. Everyone looks in the cave.
  8. I was impressed with a commercial mayonaise jar. It was two gallons, plastic with a screw top and a recyclable item. I am easily impressed.
  9. I just ordered some mapping software and I want a printer that will print 11 x 17 maps. Color is not that important, but price is. What do you guys recommend?

Can anyone help? Terry Dillard Terry, it is that simple. Coordinates are recorded per a specific map datum with a variety of formats. Your original coordinate format is: Hddd mm ss The format that you changed it to (and the format used by geocaching.com) Hddd mm.mmm The conversion is as you assumed. Your GPS will change between the various formats. The format does not define which datum is being used so you need to be familiar with both terms and their relation to one another.

  12. Food is a bad option in any cache. I have to clean out the foodstuffs from my caches a couple times a year. What are you people thinking?
  13. I can see the following scenario.... A person finally qualifies for the elitist cache only to find some lame cache with no special qualities. Booo Hisss
  14. I guess I am a member of the 'vast rightwing conspiracy.' Whatever that means.
  15. I have a relative that works for the Forest Service. There has been a lot of conversation about geocaching this past year among Forest Service officials. My relative said they are about to announce a ban.
  16. I would love to see crafts in caches. It is my experience that people take all the good stuff and leave crap. (What is with Monopoly Money and keychains?) I had someone leave a muddy split range golf ball they found on the trail. Gee thanks. Food is another thing. Who would eat food from a geocache? Anyway yea, crafts would be cool.
  17. The National Park Service has banned geocaching without so much as a public hearing that I know of. How many other public agencies are going to erode our recreational use of public land? I think we need to form a political block, just like the NRA and NOW. I think we could start with a letter writing campaign to elected representatives. It would be great if we could have a form letter posted on the web site with contact info and the facts of the sport. We could download copies of the letter and place them in stamped envelopes addressed to local representatives in our caches for the newbies. We need to get organized, before all public land is off limits. Suggestions welcome.
  18. Rats, I thought this was about something else. Yea sure, sounds like a decent idea.
  19. I have bagged all the caches within sixty miles and I barely cracked twenty. I drove 250 miles yesterday to snag four more. We need more caches in the area. I want to set up one along the Interstate for folks passing through, but it is all private land.
  20. My hiking boots are very comfortable. I am certain that hiking barefoot would not enhance the experience. I have had discussions with barefooters before. They tried to convince me that I was missing out on the holy grail of hiking. I just walked off and left them. Kooks if you ask me.
  21. I want to load cache maps into my Palm Pilot. Is there a web source or feature on this site that will allow me to pull up maps by cache number?
