  1. Found one very similar marked " Prime-Trav STA #74 J" and it was located at a RR crossing, was yours? Also was not listed on BM page. I saved a pic just in case there is a spot to log unlisted BM's later on.
  2. Until the late 70's or so most elevateds (watertowers) were painted "Aluminum" or Silver since it was thought to be the most corrosion resistant. So if you were looking for an aluminum tank you probably found it. Now days towers are painted to blend with the surroundings, green, beige etc. The only ones that haven't are the ones near or at airports/air stations which are usually checkered for high visibility. There are aluminum tanks that are used to store various products but they are usually found in chemical plants and refinerys. Hope I helped. PS: I was stationed at Yorktown NWS in the mid 60's and have been to "Ft. Useless", quite a place.

  4. Good question Geofred. I'll try to answer as best I can. First I would copy all the info on the disk, take note of the coords, then returning home look on the BM location page and try to match it up with the one you found. I would try putting in the zip closest to where you found the BM and looking at all the ones regestered nearby. In the case of this one it is named SHADY and is well marked. Some have names like this or some identifing mark or number ie:309-A, or 2027 etc. I would think that the best way to go about it would be to look for a listed BM in the area you want to hunt and then look for that one specifically. Doing a reverse hunt may prove disappointing. If I can find the other thread I will post a link for you. Hope this helps. PS: I found one just the way you are talking about. It is in the middle of the town at the RR crossing. I have looked for a match and haven't found one as yet. I assume it is not on any present registered list but then you know what they say about people who assume PPS: Team 5-oh!(posted above)has a very good idea on making it easier to identify a BM. It is what I tried for the one I found and led me to my assumption. [This message was edited by SC-Yankee on August 16, 2002 at 08:49 AM.]

  6. Sorry, I didn't see the other question. A witness post is a marker at or near the BM making it's location easier to find. In surveying, Witness posts were corner markers for property lines, sometimes they used boulders or trees. Out where I am in farm country witness posts are very often close to the BM's since all are not for elevation.

  8. Here's a pic of one type. There are many and there is a thread somewhere here where someone posts a lot of different ones.my cache page

  10. I have looked for 6 BM's so far and found 2, 1 disk and 1 watertower. I worked tanks for years including elevated tanks (watertowers) so they interest me. I try to read the plate on the manhole cover to find what company built it and when. Some of my friends worked the south-east in the 60's - 80's and if I find one I think they worked on I'll ask them if they want a picture. I'm just starting at this game so I'll log anything, lol. Sure wish I was playing when I was at all those other towers . PS: Web-Ling is correct, the steeple itself is the BM as for towers they use the finial (decorative top-knot)on the roof(this usually also serves as a vent).

  12. Well I tried doing that, I right clicked and clicked 'send to' and put it in a folder in 'My Doc's' but it had no effect whatever on the persistant message log. If I delete Easy-GPS and download it again putting it in 'My Doc's' from the get go, would that work?
  13. Started using Easy GPS and it's a wonderful thing. I can't stand his little partner on my desk top Easy GPS Meaasge Log. I have relegated that bugger to the recycle bin every time I use the app. Does anyone know how to kill it for good?
  14. I have a Ram Mount on the bike. I have it mounted to the left side handlebar so that the GPS is tucked behind the windshield just above the speedo. Works great, although I tend to turn it on only when I really need it because it can become distracting. My mount is for a Garmin but if I remember they have them to fit Magellan too. Good luck and happy hunting-SC-Yankee
  15. Fair enough I will log a DNF on the cache page of the one I missed. I guess leaving the house constitutes an active hunt. By the way the batteries mentioned were fresh out of the package.Must have been on the shelf for some time. Ever try returning something like that? Here's a little side note. I've been doing benchmarks as well and have 4 DNF's as to my 2 finds. DNF's on benchmarks do not show on my cache page although they do on the BM page. I think it would be good if they did. It would make it easier for me to keep track of the ones I may want to retry since I purge DNF's from my over-crowded waypoint list.
  16. Thanks Eraseek, the table answers a lot.
  17. Each second equals @ 6.11 feet? Is that correct? Inquiring minds would like to know. This is based on the latest known circomfrence of the planet divided by 360 (1deg)divided by 60 (1min) divided by 60 (1sec) is that about right? Is there a table listed somewhere? Thanks [This message was edited by SC-Yankee on August 08, 2002 at 03:09 PM.]

  19. Thanks Mike, I just downloaded Easy-GPS today and can already see how much easier things will be. A nice little program and free to boot. I will consider buying the Expert version as soon as I get a little more expertise []

  21. Thanks Shannah, that's just the kind of tip I'm looking for. I'm only guessing but the rapid movement is probably just enough to get a good lock. Thanks again for sharing!

  23. I'm afraid I am guilty of this but with good reason. I left the house with what I thought were fresh batteries but upon arrivivn on the scene I discovered they were flat dead. My reason for not logging the not found is simply that I have no idea if the cache is still there or not and I didn't think I should unduly alarm the cacher. Because of my dumbness I had no chance to get a fix on the cache so we enjoyed the area and went home. Should I have logged a DNF and told the cacher?
  24. Right you are HJS, that's the point at which I would try watching the coordinates to get a closer fix since the directional arrow doesn't register such slow or small movements. I haven't done enough to really test this theory and I have been told it is the hard way to go. Time will tell, and being the hard headed Irishman that I am, I'm sure it will
