  1. And the word is that the 2 parks I was looking at (the only ones you'd actually have a decent chance of hiding a regular cache) are nature preserves, with fragile plants. Oh, well. Maybe I'll find some interesting info/signage inside them this spring and place a virtual in them.

  2. George-

I think what you found may be part of some type of scavanger hunt- is there a good-sized college around? I know that sometimes sororities (maybe fraternities?) will do that to prospective members- I once found a note to the same effect when I was working at my college's library, after I saw several girls rummaging thru the same shelf of books...

I don't know if it would be considered a coincidence, but we dropped off a travel bug (with a toy Jeep attached) that we have dubbed 'Jeepster' in the Traverce City bug hotel while on vacation. The next day the TB is picked up, then the day after that the geocacher called Jeepster (from Illinois!) stopped by the same cache. Too bad he wasn't a day earlier!

  3. Regarding glass-

you could probably have a designated 'sharp objects' plastic container for when you hike. A wide-mouth nalganine/etc type water bottle should work well for longer hikes, and the gladware type containers should be fine for shorter trips.

  4. Smitherington -

That didn't happen to be the Novi Tree Farm cache, did it?

I just looked up the mountain bike page on that and realized that some of the trails DO pass thru areas open to hunting!

  5. Ok, this is (currently) fairly 'local', but I thought I should give a 'heads-up'.

For the safety of all our ash trees, please avoid moving ash wood.

In several counties around Detroit, MI and an area around Windsor Canada, Ash trees have been invaded by the Emerald Ash Borer. The impact of this insect on Ash trees has been compared to Dutch Elm disease in it's seriousness. Ash trees are dieing by the thousands, and a ban of movement of ash trees and ash wood out of several Michigan counties has been enacted.

Currently, the problem has only been identified in the Detroit/Windsor area, but it may have already spread to other areas. It's believed to have come aboard an international ship, so it's possible other major ports on the Great Lakes could be infected as well.

  6. Hey, cool! I get to do my 1st Markwell!

I was thinking of creating my own rock out of 'Stuff', and see what I could do to artistically enhance it. Home Depot and some craft stores have spraypaint that creates a 'rock' look. I was also going to scour garden centers this spring for (hopefully inexpensive)well head covers, or maybe some fake rocks designed for those small water-gardens or koi ponds.

They do make stress balls that look like fake rocks (when I placed the Travel Cache, I attempted to use one as the 1st step in a multi), but apparently a critter got to my fake rock 1st, and UMC was lucky to find the film canister. I imagine some squirrel somewhere is nesting in a bed of stress-ball pebbles....

  7. ...and I was wondering... has anyone else tried contacting Royal Oak's Parks and Rec. Department yet about caches in their parks? If so, what's the responce?

I've noticed a lack of caches in that general area, and am hoping to place one this spring.

  8. I might be mixing up several old cartoons, but late 70's/early 80's wasn't there a cartoon about a group of characters (I think 1 was an ape) that travelled around the country and were racers? Maybe I'm mixing up Grape Ape with something else....

  9. I see no problem....

You're takeing it to Florida anyway, and if you're caching on your way to FL, why not? It's a record of where the bug has been on the way from one point to another... if you're like me, and have a cachin' backpack or something similar, the bug would be hitching a ride to the other caches, whether logged in/out of them or not, before being placed in it's final destination. If the owner has no problem with it, why should the rest of us?

  10. That's how I unload all those Teany Beanie Babies I collected years back when I was addicted to the darned things. About half the time I don't take anything, but I always leave something.

*shrugs* In some areas you can find several 1/1 or other easy caches within a few hours, is there really that big of a difference? Looking back again on the size of the park BrianSnat is looking at, I can see where 9/10 finds in such an area may be a bit much. I like the idea of finding the 'Spider' body to log, and then the clues from the legs to the 'lair'. Would probably work better than my idea for a smaller area.

But if you take the 'Spider' idea, and make the legs in different parks/different areas of a large park, then having each leg as it's own find may not be so bad.

  12. Another possibility on the set-up is to have each cache (body, plus the 8 'legs') as it's own cache page. For the legs, you can post the coordinates for the parking area, or for the 'body' and note this on the 'leg' page, that the coords of this leg can be found in the body. If you want to give special honors to those that find the whole thing, maybe each leg has a codeword, and you establish a virtual that in order to log it you need the codewords from all legs.

Yeah, I know it'll give ppl. 1 more 'find' than what they actually did, but it's all the trhill of the hunt/the booty at the end, yes? icon_wink.gif

Ah, but you're assuming that the rooster was properly attentive to the needs of the chicken. That doesn't always happen. As I understand it, the rooster needs to make his cock-a-doodle-doo.

icon_rolleyes.gif Geesh, do I have to be the one to play Nerd here?? icon_biggrin.gif Eggs were in existance before chickens, since that's how you got baby dinosaurs. And I haven't heard of dinosaurs enjoying fried chicken....

  15. It would probably be a good idea to set a few in motion at the same time, since sometimes they dissappear, and often they don't move around too quickly, and the 4th graders might lose interest.

What is the class trying to accomplish? The goal of the bug(s) should reflect this. Typical goals might be to visit all 50 states, to move around a specific state, or to reach a specific destination, etc. If there's more than 1 bug, you can have them 'race' the bugs. If you can find another class of 4th graders interested in it in another school, your class can challenge their class to a race.

  16. It was fairly lightweight, and alone might not stay put in high winds. The outside bottom was concave, so you might be able to jerryrig a bag of sand/fill with cement and nail on another 'bottom'. Or just place it in the crook of large branches of a fallen tree, that should hold it in place....

  17. Popped in the Commerce, MI (Metro Detroit) Frank's Nursery and Crafts, and saw "The Sportsman's Stump"... gotta be one of the coolest pre-made cache containers available. They had them on display with Christmas items, some stuffed Santas were sitting on top of the stumps. With a few minor modifications, it would be just about perfect... Frank's is selling it for $20.

The only place online (quick search) I could find a pict of it was at:

    http://www.bfranklincrafts.com/HotItem-Stump.html

Could be the perfect thing to ask for on the holidays! (Don't forget, Wed. is usually Senior Discount Day @ Franks!)

  18. light rain, no prob. moderate rain, I'll go for easy finds. Downpour? I'm not THAT crazy (yet).

Cold weather, haven't cached in that yet, but there's probably some point where it would be too cold for me to go after even a 1/1.... I'd be worried about the GPS. (last year I had my HP Jornada in my coat pocket for over an hour in cold weather, and I had to hard-reboot it after thawing it for a few hours)
