  1. We're goin' up North this year (Michigan UP), and I've been looking for benchmarks at/near some lighthouses we'll be visiting. this benchmark just says 'lighthouse' for type. All the other benchmarks I looked up had more or less detailed locations, and what type of marker. When we find the lighthouse, can I then claim a find on the BM since nothing else was listed? Is there a definate physical marker at this site besides the entire lighthouse itself that I'm overlooking??

    Thanks!

    1. Food items are not allowed in caches.

    2. Poisonous items are NOT a good idea. If they haven't already been banned outright.

I will not tolerate anyone placing an item in a cache that would entice my furry friends to chew through the tupperware and end up ingesting poison.

May a plague of squirrels be upon you if you even think about doing that....

  3. Ok, I'm not as dramatic as Northern lights, but (assumming it's not stolen) I'd immeadately trade it in, do the American (or at least the Detriot) correct thing to do, and buy myself a nice PT Cruiser. Or Mebbe a Jeep. Ok, so they're half German now, but the only thing I would buy from Ford is the new T-bird, and GM doesn't have anything too exciting...

BTW Dinoprophet- what about dressing up like a lamb???

  4. Personally, if what I found was actually the terrible event commemorated by the cache, I don't really know how much 'public interest' the cache would have. I don't mind virtuals, the one I've actually done so far was pretty cool (M cubed Museum), but if I were an approver, I would wonder whether that particular virtual would be a valid spot of interest. To a few, maybe.

I can see something commemorating a tragic event being acceptable if it's something like a memorial to those lost at war, etc. Maybe something dedicated to the Titanic. Or the supposed spot where mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over the lantern and burned down Chicago. I know these are a lot more publicly known than what you've chosen, but you asked our opinion, and this is mine. I agree that it may be an important event for the state of Texas, but what it actually contributes to geocaching, I don't really know.

  5. CYBret -

If the entry I read there is the one you were thinking of, it's the wrong century, and I don't know how many would call it a 'tragedy' icon_wink.gif

  6. Bingo... I think I have what it is. Definately a no. Though the list of names might be harder to look up, after finding the location, a bit of deductive reasoning on what could cause a tragedy there, and a little online searching I came up with something. I think the year is 1927. Involving the rr just south of the vacant lot.

  7. After goin' winter caching a bit back, I developed an itch on my left ankle. Not really red or anything, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a bug bite. I probably scraped against some poison oak or ivy, and didn't realize it until later.

I remembered reading somewhere that a lavendar essential oil could help relieve itches, so I tried it. Applied some on my ankle via cotton swab, and it provided relief for several, mebbe up to 8 or more hours at a time. It took almost a week before I stopped having to apply it. So, if you don't mind smelling like lavendar, it might be worth a shot. I just wouldn't attempt it on a very large area... *whew* would that reek!

I've also read that mint essential oil will help itches, and I think that's part of the thing behind using toothpaste for bug bites. I think I tried that once on a mosquito bite, and it worked ok. Though you want to be careful with any kind of essential oil, Lavendar is more mild than mint, though both can be applied 'neat' (pure essential oil, not mixed with a carrier oil) in small quantities.

  8. Hopefully it'll be here by/still be here for the Woodward Dream Cruise! I live about a mile off Woodward (can 'hike' in), and could get photos of it with the classics... Mebbe even it's big bother... icon_wink.gif

  9. Brings up an interisting idea... with the help of a UP & Metro Detroit/Ann Arbor/Lansing cacher, how about this multicache:

    "The Fall of Lucifer Cache"

1st leg is in Paradice, MI, 2nd in Hell, MI

    icon_biggrin.gif

Scary thing is, it's entirely doable if you're vacationing in the UP, and returning south past Ann Arbor....

  10. Virtual caches may still lead some to hike off-path in ecologically sensitive areas, or near archaeolgically important sites. If I saw a virtual that I thought was inappropriate for these reasons, I would ask the owner (nicely icon_wink.gif )to move/remove it.

When I first read the thread, the thought came to mind of someone setting a waypoint on the Rim of the Grand Canyon (*not* along the fenced touristy areas) on a whim, creating it as a virtual cache, and some poor cacher intent on the screen walking over the edge because his GPSr says it's still 30' away.... icon_biggrin.gif

  11. Check out the discussion boards on www.backpacker.com. You can find all sorts of info there, plus probably some links to websites about through hiking.

Also, backpacker magazine have a 'get out more' tour designed to help hikers with the basics of backpacking. The website ishere. They have 2 ppl go to various sports stores and give a free 'class'. They toss out a few goodies too. (a few really good things, mostly t-shirts, mugs, etc) Great for the beginner packer. I think they have the same people as last year, and if I remember correctly, they through-hiked the Appalachian Trail themselves. If the 'tour' is comming to a town near you, you may be able to catch them after class.

  12. I think I saw a link somewhere to a place where you can enter in coordinates and it'll create a map showing them in relationship to each other, but I can't find that link.

What I need is something that can show distinctive points, say 10' away from each other.

    Thanks!

  13. I don't think we should require x cache finds before being allowed to place one, but I do think something like "It is highly recommended that a geocacher find several caches before placing a cache" in big, bold, red letters should appear at the top of the 'guide to placing a cache' FAQ page.

  14. Does that mean The Smallest Cache in the World should be archived, since there's no way to get a logbook in there?

I think caches without logbooks should be allowed, but IMHO, there better be a good reason why it dosen't have one. Besides, if it's big enough to have a logbook, a cacher upset over the lack of a logbook could always visit and leave one.

  15. I've got sort-of mixed feelings:

    Free: great.

Pay, but is something unique, like the newspaper for Mackinaw Island, MI ("The cheapest souvineer on the Island except the one you take home on your shoes"): acceptable.

Pay, regular paper: *really* grey area. One or two in a region might be ok, but I'd hate to see them start popping up everywhere around where I live- I already get a daily paper. And once you get a few of those, you start to get the 'but there's the other cache like this that was approved' whine....

  17. While you should be fine in Iowa, Weasel, I just wanted to let people know (again.. but we might have some newbies now) that if you're along the Great Lakes, and especially if you're within about 100 miles of the Metro Detroit area, Please do not move ANY Ash Tree wood.

The reason is that we are infected with the Emerald Ash Borer, introduced to the area by some pallattes shipped from overseas. There is little hope for treatment, so prevention is key. It's been said that this can be as bad as dutch elm disease, wiping out the entire ash population.

  18. if the person with the bug up their butt with this virt. ever visited the petroglyphs at the Valley of Fire, NV. Sadly, not only are they probably 'touched', many people have decided to add their own glyphs to the rocks in that area. (and I visited this place years ago, so it can't be us nasty cachers!)

  19. Why are you upset that some of those with high find numbers have not placed caches yet? Although maybe there's not many 'hiders' in your area, why whine? Why not try to recruit some friends to the sport?

In many metro areas that experience snow, I bet it's possible for someone to rack up 100 or so from fall until early spring. But do we really want to be placing a new cache offtrail somewhere in a park during these months, where, come spring, sensitive plants may be damaged by cachers? I know that there's opportunities to place caches at this time that are more urban or are in places where it's obvious stuff won't get trampled, but I hope you visit any caches you may have placed offtrail in the spring to evaluate it's impact on the environment. We have a state park near us that has a wonderful variety of spring flower groth, and I'd hate to place something now, that ends up right in a patch of mayapple or something.

I think I had about 36 caches before I placed 1- I know it's nothing like 77, but I bet I'll have well over 100 before I place something that involves a hike in the woods, and going offtrail. The place a cache is in dosen't have to be any place special, but I do like to see some thought put into it, and a clever/unique hide. I'm content to spend the winter coming up with ideas for hides that are more interesting than pick-a-spot-and-cover-it-with-bark-and-or-sticks. Luckily, one of those I was able to implement already because I knew for a fact I would not be impacting a sensitive area. I've actually had a cacher that *couldnt* find my 1/1! icon_biggrin.gif

While I agree that relative newbies/hiders only are capable of placing a great cache, it's best to hunt a bunch before you place. At the very least, you'll start to (hopefully) develop the 'force', and can maybe avoid 'obvious' signs when you place your caches.

  20. I don't know about the site posted, but the *type* of device shown may not be a hoax. See this article]in the Detroit News. Looks like Purdue University built something similar.
