  1. I've run into this problem with the geocoins. It's usually when you go directly to the 'track travel bugs' page from the main gc page and attempt to log the coin. To pick up the coin, you need to click on the TB link from the page of the geocache it's in.

And you should delete the snapshot of your TB # ASAP so someone dosen't virtually pick it up and play around with it.

  2. Keystone 2 originally came up with the general idea, and I later made a TB and cache of it: Pay it Forward

This allows the creation of a cache that encourages good works, but is non-specific to the recepients of said works, and the benefactors are chosen by the individual cachers.

  3. Also, with that kind of TB, unless you etch 'travel bug' on the outside, when it gets into a regular size cache someone might mistake it as a trade item, be in a hurry and not look in it, and have it sit in the bottom of a backpack for weeks on end...

  4. I've seen something similar in pet stores, for ID tags... but I can't seem to find it online when I need to icon_rolleyes.gif

Another possibility is to make a shrinky-dink TB tag. Probably would not fit all the info you can get with those magnifying things, but you could probably at least get a brief goal desc. on it...

  5. Kudos Jeremy, I think the map is awesome!

Personally, I like the little icons, as opposed to just colored boxes. Not to nitpick, but the ghostie for virtuals seems a bit odd, but as I don't have a definate better suggestion for what to display virts as, (at least as a quickly recognizable icon), I'll live with it unless/until someone comes up with a better idea. It's still way better than guessing what type it is with those old blue/green boxes.

I'd think *maybe* a big blue 'V' for virtuals, but I don't know if that would be visually confusing with the checkmarks for found/owned caches (esp. for colorblind?)

  6. Here's my favorite log from the caches I own (they found it later on). gotta love those 'epic' adventures!

    Team Shredded Bark:

O gather ye Trojans (and Oak Parkers and Southfielders) and hear my epic tale of woe; the story of a quest cursed by the (geo)gods, how the mighty Bark has been brought down by a lowly 2/1.5.

JCR first set off on the odyssey on Wednesday 14 May, after bright Apollo had completed more than half of his trip across the sky. Shortly after leaving his chariot, JCR lost his mightier-than-sword pen on the way to the first stage. Despite the help of an eagle-eyed class from a local girls school, the silver pen would not reveal itself. JCR should have heeded this bad omen, losing a thing before even beginning to find, but valiantly he continued onward.

JCR gathered the rest of the clues with the swiftness of winged-footed Hermes (Mercury), remounted his steed and soon numbered the small circular forest of the third stage of the quest. Anticipating a quick find, JCR confidently strode toward the final challenge. Such pride must have annoyed Artemis (Diana) goddess of the hunt and the satellite, for she hid it from his eyes, and he looked in vain that sorry day, his search interrupted frequently by a class from a boys school, who were wandering the woods with their teacher.

JCR returned another day with the able assistance of team mate JTR, but even those 4-year-old eagle eyes could not penetrate the veil Atrtemis had cast, for the coins continued to elude them. Yet since that time, others (less accursed) have found the treasure they seek.

Yea, even after spending another hour in the late evening today, beating the bushes and branches with his staff, JCR emerged from the woods thorn-scratched and beaten, with quest unsatisfied. Despite the assistance of the swift GPS gods, who have granted a good fix leading to the same spot all three days, the quest yet remains unfulfilled. They may have to consult the Oracle at Delphi (world headquarters).

The full and mighty compliment of Team Shredded Bark is planning to mount another journey to this cache, hopeful that their supplications and the feminine skills of bright-eyed huntress MEB may turn the heart of Artemis, or bring the assistance of bright-eyed Athena, and they might complete this quest.

  7. What Trippy said. If a fellow casher hadn't e-mailed me about one of my newer placements, I wouldn't have known visitation was impacting the area more than I thought it would. If it's a fellow cacher you know (chat with on local geocachihng pages), you probably have an idea of their personality and what you can get away with when you e-mail them.

About badly hidden, a nudge might be to say 'cache wasn't very well hidden, you might want to see if someone's moved it from the original location'.... caches do tend to 'wander' at times.

Sometimes conditions change from when the cache was placed; construction, seasonal, etc. I think a part of one of UMC's multis got frozen in place- stuff where it affects others searching you should probably post in your log. If something has changed, especially if it can be considered 'unexpected', from when it was placed, many owners would like to know so they can check up on it.

Lame caches... I usually only list what I took and what I left, if applicable. Unfortunate location or poorly thought out, it depends on what is meant by that. I can't remember finding a cache that was truly poorly thought out (besides one that was 40' from an existing cache, before the .1 mile was in effect/enforced). Maybe one 10' from a highway or active rr tracks would be considered poorly thought out, but the admins catch those.

  9. I was wondering what in the world sterilization (of males)does for 'problem bears'... even in Yellowstone (or is that Yosimite?) They have to dispatch problem bears if they return so many times after relocation attempts. I don't know much about the mating setup, does 1 male typically mate with more than 1 female? If so, you're probably not going to do that much to the size of the population, you have to render the females usless to do so.

Heck, by shooting them you may be able to help the hungry:

  10. Hmm...

We need to get Dinoprophet in on this thread, he is the Master of changing avitars... though you always know it's him, despite his wily disguises...

getting back to the vegatarian thing, anyone else hear that there's going to be a VEGAN on the new VH1 reality show 'Surviving Nugent?' icon_eek.gif

This ought to be interesting to watch. Wonder what the heck that person was thinking, I don't think many people go Vegan for just health reasons....

  11. Monon 1 and 2 are in Broadripple- Tarzan Swam Here (GC1AE1) is also in Broadripple, but quite a hike away. Completely doable, but not the best walk, since most of the time you're on the sidewalk with cars zooming by...

Central Park GCGVV4 is in a park along the Monon Greenway. MeadowLark GCGX22is near the future expansion route of the Monon in Carmel.

    Check out http://www.indianatrails.org/N_suburban.htm

for a map of trails in the Indy area.

You can also easily see the approximate locations of caches by using the state map:

    http://www.geocaching.com/map/IN.asp

you can zoom in and get IDs of the caches. Great way to quickly see how many and where they are, though they're still working on getting a program with street-level detail.

Looking at the maps it's hard to tell, but it looks like there's a run of caches in about the same location as a parallel road trail going NE from 465, between Carmel and Fishers. Pioneer Graveyard GCA3F5, seems to be in the middle of the main mass of 7 along that line. You could probably easily enter in 10 or so that are close, and do a drive-by beforehand to get an idea of total distance required.

    Hope this helps!

  12. Even more basic than someone cheating, good owners will check up on the cache anyway, esp. at the 1st hint of something wrong in a finder's (or non-finder's) log. Bad owners don't give a hoot, and even if they got around to placing the prize and slips anyway, probably wouldn't budge to restock.

If you need a reminder to do cache maintenance, set Outlook on your computer or PDA to buzz you every few months that it's 'cache maintenance time'.

  13. Southdeltan-

From the looks of other hybrids, looks like you could. If you have/know who you're state/regional approvers are, ask them what you can get away with. MI has our own approvers, and my hybrids were all approved with parking coords as the listed coords, actual coords in the body of text, and with letterboxing directions in the body of the text as well. The first one I placed I only put letterboxing clues on at 1st, with a note that gps coords would be provided after someone claimed the FTF prize. (congrats, WeeElvis)

Basically, the letterboxing directions are one big hokin' clue. I've got the GPS coords for those who really want to use GPS. I don't see why some admins wouldn't accept this setup, since some cachers don't use GPS... I've found a couple using just the maps, descriptions, clues, and photos of general area cache was in.

  14. I did- 1 in (city of)Monroe and 1 in Bedford Twp, over the weekend icon_biggrin.gif

I love making those stamps, hopefully my artwork will get better thou. I hope to get more up in this area soon, but would love to see others place them too!

  15. After finding a couple of local letterboxes, I thought it would be neat to start a couple of letterbox hybrids. To be honest I didn't look up many caches that were posted as hybrids, so I placed them with a heavy letterboxing influence- I entered the parking coordinates as the ones that'll come up on search, and put the actual coords in the body of the description. I set the descriptions along letterboxing clues, listing landmarks and pacing off to the cache.

Now that I look up letterboxes in other states (there aren't any within 100 miles of me, besides the ones I placed- and I'm in Metro Detroit), I find that on geocaching.com they're mostly more geocaching oriented. One in NY appeared to just have a logbook (?) what Letterboxers do on that one to personally record a find I don't know. Another said that the rubber stamp is for letterboxers- (why can't geocachers be encouraged to bring along a favorite stamp, and to use the stamp in a personal logbook?)

From the few entries on 1 of my letterboxes so far, it looks like several people enjoyed finding it letterbox-style.

I know I'm rambling a bit, but my question is, why can't more of these be true hybrids, with the letterboxing clues listed on the cache page? I've seen a few that do, but most don't really encourage cachers to participate in the letterbox aspect.

I've heard the exact opposite; that drinking urine can further dehydrate you. I don't think drinking urine is a good idea- there's a reason it's a 'waste product'.

On the opposite end of not drinking enough water, I have heard about a case or 2 of ppl in the Grand Canyon that drank too much water (and not enough electrolites/food) and had to be flown out. Be reasonable, don't go totally nuts if you do happen upon a good source of water in a survival situation.

I considered calling it a 'hitchhiker', but in the end the best description was 'parasite' and that just wasn't very appealing to me.

How about symbiote? That seems even more accurate than parasite, since symbiots live together for mutual benefit. Would love to see something like this!

hmm... going off on a tangent with this... several years ago I had a job where I was able to listen to books on tape as I worked. Several of my favorite authors had the same guy reading the books (unabridged versions), and after a while when I was actually reading books, it was *HIS* voice I heard in my head!!!

  19. Luckily, I've never encountered a 'problem' rest stop. A couple of caches are:

80/90 Westbound Cache in Norhtern Indiana, just west of Ohio.

Michigan route 23 in Southeast Michigan, a few miles north of the MI/OH state line

I-75 Overlook, one of the best rest stops in the Lower Penninsula, North of Gaylord, south of Mackinaw

Mackinac Mooch, while not technically by a rest stop, public facilities are available by the Fort and it's a great place to stretch your legs and do a bit of freighter- watching before/after crossing 'da bridge'.

Cut River Cantilever, along route 2 in da UP. Quite a hike, though a short one.

Bay Furnace Along 28 in da UP. Technically not a real rest stop, but a great place right along the highway to stop.

Scott Falls another along 28 in da UP, across the road from the rest stop.

Squeaky Sands yet another along 28 in da up.

Lake View a visitor's center along ... you guessed it.. 28 in da UP

Tioga Trail along 41 in da UP. Great falls at the end of a shortish trail.

Can you fall in the Gorge?, another along 41 in da UP. Another spectacular waterfall.

While we have not found the caches at all these rest areas, we have visited them all (at one point in time or another) and found them to be great spots, at least in daylight (we haven't paid any of the above a night visit). Though in da UP it's hard to find a rest stop that isn't scenic, it's best to hold your nose if you plan to use the facilities.......

  20. Sounds like a cool idea! You could probably rig something with magnets if you wanted to stick it on a sign. If you incorperate the address of a building some people may cheat and figure out the final cache without visiting anything.

I've never seen an architect's scale of mock stone, sounds cool- do they make an engineer's scale to match?? I'm a landscape architect* - we don't use arkie scales too often... icon_razz.gificon_wink.gif

  21. You can ask the creators of peek-a-boo and Michigan Frog how they set up theirs. Frog was activated when the cache was opened, it was glued to the inside of the can near the top so when opened it released a push-button. Peek-a-boo is motion detector (I think), since it didn't go off until we moved around stuff at the bottom of the cache. (This one was under a false bottom).

Just find something that plays music/makes noise/etc that you want to use, figure out what it's trigger is, and find a way to trigger it. For the cards it should be real easy, since they're already set up to play when opened- just attach the body of the device to the cache, the trigger strip to the lid, and off you go!

Beersnob was thinking of rigging up one of those talking beer bottle openers... I think they have one with Homer Simpson that goes 'mmm...beer..' icon_biggrin.gif
