  1. I prefer to cache with Happifind but when I have to go solo...at least I get to hold the GPS.
  2. Destructive Test Technician - Automotive (In other words, I break things other people fix.) Keeeerash, kaaaaaboom, kerbaaaaaang. Working daily to keep ya safe...somebody's gotta do it!
  3. does anyone know if the Lowrance XOG is capable of saving manually-entered user waypoints?
  4. yup, Geko smack will have you runnin in circles all over the place...just don't play it in your backyard near the clothesline.
  5. I recently bought a Spectec SDG 810 to use in an HP Ipaq and I'm not too impressed with it. It is an SDIO rather than a Compact Flash, but along the same lines. Spectec SDG 810 The unit shows a strong sat. signal in a program called "GPS viewer", but when I open the mapping software (Oddysey Mobile) it doesn't recognize the GPS receiver. It did work one time - briefly, but when I moved the handheld around, the signal was lost completely and no amount of repositioning could get it back. I have downloaded all the necessary drivers and followed all installation instructions to the letter. As I said before, I haven't had it very long and have not had much time to "fiddle" with it. Maybe I got a bad unit or maybe they're just junk. I've noticed that Semson's has discontinued the item.....hmmm. If you find a Compact Flash for your Dell that works better than this, please keep us updated.
  6. If you ever want to use another mapset (like topo) and it is on a micro sd also, you will have to manually swap those little buggers. Not something I'd like to do outside on a windy day. Also, depending on your GPSr, you may have to remove batteries (which may mean a compass recalibration) to swap out cards. I have a 60Csx and I purchased my maps (City Nav and US Topo) on CD, then transferred all the maps I need to a 2 Gig micro sd which resides safely in my GPSr. When I need to switch between City Nav and Topo, all I have to do is go to the "Map Setup" page on my receiver and make the selection.
  7. bad link above...try this: Spectec SDG-810
  8. Does anyone have experience with using a GPS reciever like this in a Windows Mobile 5 PPC? Spectec SDG-810 If so, what mapping software is good. Can I use my Garmin Mapsource products that I use on my 60Csx? I'm really interested in voice turn-by-turn since this will be primarily used in the car. Thanks in advance for your help.
  9. Yes I do use PQ's and GSAK but the icons are real aiports and wow, there are tons of them! I just reloaded my 60Csx with different maps (City Nav 8) for a roadtrip tomorrow and they are very distracting. They were there with my previous maps too, but in my home state they didn't seem so bothersome. Help
  10. I have searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer so please forgive me if this is redundant. How can I tweak my Garmin 60Csx to get rid of those airport icons? I have tried several settings on the map setup screens and haven't found the magic bullet yet. Please help.
  11. Once while searching for an urban cache, the cords directed me to a small sappling tree in a tiny park. I carefully pulled the branches apart, sure that I would locate the cache there. My eyes discovered the most realistic looking bird-shaped container sitting on a nest about six inches above my head. "What a clever cache container" I thought, as I reached for it. Just as my hand was about to contact the bird container, it took flight with a violent thrashing of feathers. No wonder it looked so real!

  13. I've used one like this for about a year on my Garmin 60Csx and haven't had any problems.
  14. I carry a crochet hook in my swagbag. Sometimes t the little hook thingy on the end works great for snagging those micros and dragging them out of their hiding places. I can't take credit for the idea...it was suggested to me.
  15. Yup, I've done it too...sometimes I just use it as an exuse to go for one more cache...."C'mon Honey, we HAVE to go search for it now since I've already marked it as found!"
  16. I like to put in "store bought" camping & hiking items: (Carabiners, Small Flashlights, Clip-on Strobes, First-Aid Kits, Sealed Bug Wipes, Sealed Safety Whistles, Accurate Compasses, etc.) If the item didn't come in a sealed package, I put it in an appropriate sized plastic ziplock baggie. (You can buy these at craft stores for cheap and in really small sizes too...look in the beads and jewelry area of the craft store, or just ask.) I also leave swag I've found from other caches but I still put it in a ziplock baggie. I have found some pretty waterlogged caches and lots of trade-items-turned-junk.
  17. Hey, thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it.
  18. I really appreciate you sharing your observations and information with me. As I mentioned in my original post, if I use my IPAQ as a GPS it would be my secondary unit. When I road travel, my IPAQ is plugged in and turned on anyway (MP3 Player) so I thought it would be great to utilize it as a GPS too since it has a bigger screen. For the rough stuff like bushwacking and kayaking I will always use the 60Csx. I checked the buygpsnow homepage and I found a $90 Spectec but it was bluetooth. My IPAQ isn't bluetooth capable. Did I miss a "non Bluetooth" one somewhere else on the site?...I'm always up for saving a buck. Thanks again.
  19. Informative review...I wonder from reading this line in the review: "...Now there is a feature of SiRFStarIII called static navigation or SN..." if Static Navigation is a standard feature of the SirFStarIII chipset? Two other questions...would 512mb be enough storage if I want to load quite a few detailed street maps and large, detailed (maybe custom) Topo maps? and can they be ovelayed or must they be toggled? Thanks.
  20. Hey, thanks for the info and also for catching my CF and SD confusion! I've had the IPAQ for a while and sorta forgot what type of storage it has. (WHEW...that coulda been a costly mistake!) After doing some more research I found this: http://www.semsons.com/sp2sdgpsrewi.html I would welcome any input on this one. THANKS
  21. My 60Csx does something similar but unlike yours freezing up on the map page, mine continues to show movement BUT the black triangular pointer moves sideways instead of point-first and very "jerky". I thought it had something to do with map orientation (Track Up or North Up). Tried toggling that setting but doesn't help. Powering off and back on is the only thing that works for me. Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often.
  22. Garmin 60Csx! Cool little treasure chest icons that flip their lid open when you find 'em...plus the option to "Find Next (closest) Geocache".
  23. I need info about Compact Flash GPS receivers. I just recently discovered that such a thing exists and I would like to use my IPAQ rx1950 as a second GPS (I have a Garmin 60Csx as my primary true love!) Some things I would like to know about CF GPS are: What specs should I look for? Since they plug into the CF slot, will I have to store my maps on the device's drive? (only 64mg) Does anyone have experience with BackCountry Navigator and CF GPS? How is overall accuracy with CF GPS? Any preffered brands...where to buy to get best deal? What exactly is included in CF GPS "Bundles"? Sorry if some of this has been covered in previous posts. I'm really a newb at this and need all the help I can get. Any info...pro's & con's etc. would be appreciated.
