  1. We just went outside and tested our two Magellan SportTrak Pro GPS receivers and our Explorist 100, and all are showing errors on known waypoints of from 599 feet to 993 feet. So, I just tried calling a geocacher friend of ours who works for the federal government in a GIS capacity; he has a top-secret security clearance. He was very close-lipped, but confirmed that SA was activated today and that there is something afoot, but he said that he could not tell me more. APRIL FOOLS! I thought for sure that Vinny was about to tell us it had something to do with the Alien Grays! DCC
  2. There's a big difference though... If you're finding a cache that you placed, there's really no "find" to it. You already know where it is. If you adopt a cache you already found, you did in fact make a true find on that cache, it just happens that you now own it as well. That's what happened to me... I just adopted a cache that I was FTF on! It was such a cool cache that I couldn't stand to see it archived as the owner was moving out of state. DCC
  3. Hey, if you're gonna log caches that you actually hid, why go through the charade of going and looking for them? DCC
  4. I carry a camera while caching and will absolutely take photographs at every site that merits a photo. You'll notice in my gallery (found on my profile page) there's no photos of lampposts or guardrails... , but Geocaching has taken me to some beautiful places! DCC
  5. You could probably go out blindfolded and randomly toss a handful of rocks and hit at least one Starbucks There's one on every corner (and some have two!). DCC
  6. If the monument is stone, the adhesive that attaches the velcro will leave a permanent mark. The oil from your hands will mar stone... it really doesn't take much. DCC
  7. Ok... in the shower this morning (where I do all my best thinking) I came up with an idea for this issue... Make two geocaches, one at each ferry landing and inside those caches would be instructions on how to locate the Ferry Travel Bug! All you need then is a travel bug tag and to find a good place to attach it to the ferry! Then you have two caches with a travel bug to log in between! Of course the bug would have to be logged to either of the two caches at the landing points... but it sounds interesting. Placing an actual cache on the ferry would be a bit of a problem. And make sure you get permission from the ferry company. Let me know when it's all in place so I can come find it! DCC
  8. I was at an event last year and one of the caches published for the event was muggled by someone who lived on the street the cache was hidden on, and replaced with a nasty note in under 4 hours. DCC
  9. I haven't seen one that required man hole access. But there are definitely caches published on this site where the entrance to the storm sewer didn't involve lifting a manhole cover, but the instructions warned not to try to climb up and exit the manhole cover above, as it was in the middle of a busy street. I don't have anything against them, in fact, some of them look fun. I just can't see how it could possibly be legal. Anyone ever get permission from a city/county/agency for one? Just curious, DCC
  10. I'd think it's most likely illegal. If cops caught you lifting a manhole cover, do you think they'd be cool with it? DCC
  11. It was an accident. It's not like you intentionally pitched it off the bridge or something. No need for me to call the owner names here in the fourm... but I've got a few You did exactly as you should have and most of us cache owners would have thanked you for it. DCC
  12. Like the smile in that picture isn't worth $500! Please, try to have fun... it's all we ask DCC
  13. In my bag all the time... Nikon Coolpix S50 (credit card sized) and when going somewhere especially nice, my Nikon D100 (and two or three heavy lenses). I worked in Professional Photofinishing for over 10 years... not in your average 1 hour photo... we were printing art prints for the Smithsonian, large scale ads for billboards and I also handled a huge amount of the Lucasfilm movie stills and behind-the-scenes pics that they used for promotion (fun stuff)! I'm pretty picky about my gear, and I'm a huge fan of the Nikon optics. I have been mulling around the idea of upgrading my D100 to a D200. New toys are always fun. DCC
  14. Never been to an event that "didn't" have a log to sign. DCC
  15. First year (2007): 387, according to the stats on my profile page. I was shooting for 500, but came to the conclusion that meeting that goal just really wasn't that important if it meant running around at night grabbing caches in parking lots (and it would have). Currently working on a "Quadrangle Challenge" (a cache in each USGS Quadrangle in the SF Bay Area). Last day out we spent 12 hours driving 350 miles for 12 caches! I loved every minute of it and got to see some amazing and wonderful places I might never have visited (only one of which involved a parking lot!). I love stats... just look at my profile, but it really is all about the journey and the friends I meet along the way. Congrats on your milestone! DCC
  16. Hasn't Jeremy been really clear (repeatedly, in these very forums) that Virtuals etc. aren't coming back? DCC
  17. That's funny... exactly like our area. If a cache isn't found in a very short period of time, people start assuming that the "usual suspects" must be out of town or something. We'll also see notes posted on the new caches from the usual suspects saying things like "I won't be out of work until 6pm, so it's up to you guys". It's all in fun after all. DCC
  18. Thanks all for the hints, help & encouragement. We'll try again soon. You can use the follow road setting to get you there, but when it's gotten you as close as it can, you want to press "menu" and then select "re-calculate". It will then ask you again if you'd like to follow road or go off road, select "off-road" then you'll get the pointer to follow to your final destination. Happy hunting! DCC
  19. I was once involved in a confrontation when four cachers descended on a site for a FTF. Luckily I had already found and logged it when they all arrived. But then... Um... we all exchanged names, talked about other local caches we'd found, commented on the quality of this new hide, talked about meeting up for a future hunt, shook hands and went on our way. Yup... that's how we "throw down" over FTF in my neighborhood! DCC
  20. Well, I should clarify... we never did find the Moon Landing cache, but we did find two today. We found the Bloomer Park one and this one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...64-b967ba541975 and had a blast doing it. Congrats! And now it begins DCC
  21. That's awesome! Enjoy the times, and have fun! DCC
  22. That is definitely weird... the lightbox even pops up with the title of each photo, but the link to the photo is broken?!?! DCC
  23. I would agree (without seeing the position of the proposed caches) that this is probably a "power trail" issue. I've seen plenty of "series" caches, where you find a selection of traditional caches each with a bit of the coordinates for the "final" cache. But if the caches that make up the series are too close together (like the minimum distance.... .10 of a mile) I can definitely see that running afoul of the "power trail" designation. If that is the case, then it does make perfect sense to turn it into a multi-cache. DCC
  24. Actually, a multi cache is fairly specific. See the Groundspeak definition. The other one you mention... a series of traditional caches (each a container, a log and a GC#) is not listed as a multi. Each cache in the series is a traditional. And with this "series" cache, each one in the series usually has a part of the final coordinates and you have to find all the caches in the series to get the complete coordinates for the final. The final would be listed as a puzzle cache (cache not found at the listed coordinates). It's kinda like a multi (and lots of fun) but it is in no way listed as a Multi-Cache. DCC
