Are we nearly there yet??

Great effort!! Keep thinking about an attempt at something like this, but currently my record is 17 so a little way to go (plus i'm far to lazy to really try..!) Well done!

You can get the PQ with a ebook and load that, however I have to agree with Sensei that GSAK is integral to the system I use. If you set up the Macros to read the PQ directly from your email and the export buttons then it is only 3 clicks and you're done. It also means that the export to my GPSr is identical to the latest cachemate data.

Well, Firstly was my partner. Although she was 'the reluctant other' for a while she finally took her own name. Then, shortly after I started was my parents. Camping in the New Forest together I took them to do the lovely Sophies Choice and they were quickly hooked. They in turn have got my Aunt & Uncle, Neighbour and colleague out and about. Then I've got my partners colleague who are shortly to buy their first GPSr. So at a 1:5 ratio the term Muggle might soon be a rarity.

I'd just add that when re-visiting a cache recently to pick up a travel bug it found it it have totally changed location, and actually took longer to find that the first time! It was effectively different cache. Thinking that I should be allowed to claim a 2nd find, I thought i'd email the owner to check. They were more than happy to let me claim the find but appreciated the email first. So if you hear that a cache has changed completely I don't see why you shouldn't 'Find' it a second time.

£1.50 a month is hardly paying through the nose for such a service. However I do respect the right for people to decide if they wish to pay for the service. I had cached for about months before the need for a PQ (or 6) became to great. Also agreeing with Geo-Kate that placing a cache costs more than a month of PM yet adds more for the community as a whole. Therefore setting caches is support in its own way. In fact, i'd pay double if they opened up some of the data for use on our own websites, TB mileage/location, cache lists etc.

last gasp of summer picnic bash

Sounds good! Regarding the local caches, True Grit was archieved last week and In A Spin(ney) is likey to go the same way if no-one starts a forced adoption on it. Appears that the owner has not been online for over a year. So, are there any New Forest cachers that can take over / replace these to keep the numbers up in the area? -
Ooh, this looks like fun! I'll try and knock off a few too!

Well, i'm in the process of setting up the site on the actual server, however there is still a fair amount of work to do. It might be that once the main part of the site is working we can crack on with getting the caches up and running then add 'features' in the future.

need advice on paperless caching
Bambography replied to SARS Cacher's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Yep, echoing what markandlynn said above, make sure you are using a GPX file as this contains all of the description and log data that GSAK uses to build the database and then export to Cachemate. If you are using a PQ to get your data (if not, its worth it!) then check at the end that GPX is shown in the small "In the Format:" drop-down. I just switched to the Palm for paperless and it took a while for me to really get a system that works for me, but i'm now there and its great. Since you are a premium member, use the PQ system to download the waypoints. If you send the emails to a provider with POP3 access (such as Gmail/googlemail then you can download the PQ directly in GSAK without any messing around. Then you can add buttons to the top bar to export to CacheMate. -

I suspec t that either you our the GC.com website did something wrong in trying to list it as public as I can't find it either. I did a keyword search on "Avon" (best avoid kennett/kenet/kennet/kenett) and found only two routes, neither of which are yours: Kennet and Avon Canal Ride by KiwiGary Kennet + Avon Canal - Bath to Newbury by Winscombe Wanderers Both of these are to the West of Newbury I always have terrible trouble getting to the routes page, it's so hard to navigate to. Premium Features -> create your pocket queries -> find caches along a route -> find public routes -> Search by keyword. Is there a better way? The quick way is, I think, just to go here: http://www.geocaching.com/my/userroutes.aspx PS I think all this stuff is premium members only. Edited to add: PPS the map of caches I referred to in my previous post can be found here: GCNV6B I've found it all through the same way as you! Not sure that there is a better way or not. I've set up a PQ using KiwiGarys' route. Looks about right for a day so looking forward to that! Thanks for everyones suggestions. They are all going on the To-Do list!

Cache advice for a California Yank?
Bambography replied to Dave_W6DPS's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
...no it ain't London's best, Regent's Park is better ... depends on your point of view. Then I am from Basingstoke so would have to agree with Goldopt on this one! -
Made slightly more complicated by only having one driving licence between us !
-
Cheers folks. I'd thought Newbury was looking good, and i've done several of the central Oxford ones so I think Newbury it'll be. I'll take a look at the other suggestions as they sound like they will make a nice days caching for a weekend sometime.

Cache advice for a California Yank?
Bambography replied to Dave_W6DPS's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Earlier this year I walked from Holland Park in West London through Hyde Park and then upto Regents Park. I took in 17 caches that day and had time to look at some cameras in a store in the centre. Walking is by far the easiest in central london as it can actually take longer to use the tube (the tube map is very distorted in the centre!). Take a look at google maps and the scale carefully when planning! -
Yes, yes! I know its not about the numbers ..... BUT... Myself and another cacher have a day off at the end ofthe month to go out and find as many as we can in a day (none of this mad 24hr stuff, just a normal waking day). I wondered if anyone had any suggestions of an area within a resonable distance of Basingstoke that was dense enough to get great numbers? How many would be a 'good' or 'great' day (my current record is 17 on an amble around London)? Also any hints or tips to how to maximise finds and minimise travel would be much appreciated! Cheers.

I don't use it on the Mac (Firefox rules the roost there) so I can't see me bothering on the PC.

OU PhD Research into Geocaching

Done, Looking forward to seeing what this comes out with. -
I assume that their not in your watchlist? Thats the only way I thought that would happen..?!?
-
No, No No! I went over there once - sat baffled for a while, eventually found out that there was a tunnel near me and came straight back over to geocaching.
-
Also just to add that these images are a great start!! In the future once all the main site is settled down maybe adding TB races / target caches etc would be a great extension to the system. I realise that geocaching.com is about hiding the caches, but TBs have become such a feature, and with so many cachers having races/competitions it would be a lovely addition.
-
I think that it only shows if there is a deafult image for the TB. Upload one to the gallery then select it to be the default image. It should then show up. I've got one thats not appearing and its the only one without an image so just putting 2 + 2 together.

Sounding quite positive so far then! I'm away for the weekend then will try and sort a few things out! Will post more when I have it.
