  1. i've just been having a look at this and am now confused. I've added scripts suggested and also one that i've converted from Java on THIS SITE to my site. My page is http://www.bambography.co.uk/geocaching/distance.php When I use the same coords on my page and on the movable type page I get different distances. I have to admit that I don't fully understand this so there is probably something i'm missing. Does anyone know what, or am I doing something wrong? Cheers in advance! Chris.
  2. Beat me to it! An email is going off to Groundspeak as I type regarding the overall permissions for control of the final coords. More news soon!
  3. Darn, looks like I was the only one to turn up to the event tonight! Must check the attend logs first next time
  4. I've just checked the places I have it and all seems to be fine. The link I had was already on img.geocaching.... Maybe it was a temporary issue.
  5. That really is very impressive!! Congratulations to you all!!! Well done!
  6. Although in general I prefer the new version (look & selective lists) the limitation on the size of area has spoilt it for me. It was great being able to zoom out and see clusters of caches. Now you can't see caches when zoomed to the size of a large town, so its not easy to find clusters/routes.
  7. They certainly do check it. I set up my first cache last weekend and it was initially sent back to me as I'd forgotten to change it to a Multi from the default Trad. In fact i've been fairly lucky in that the only times the cache has not matched the type stated is when you have had to find several caches and then one final cache, in this case they were all labled as multis when the first three were trads that were part of a multi. Otherwise no problems from me. With the cache in question I can see why the owner selected it, and fair enough.
  8. I picked up the St Andrews one while I was in Scotland and since it had completed its journey in about 4 moves (and it started in somewhere like Colorado!!!!) I brought it back down south for another shot! I do like the idea of sending it to some strange far flung location to watch its travels back again.
  9. Just found the small link between the types list and the premium member list that gives a link to a list of the caches within the map area.
  10. I much prefer the map however I do miss the named list. Sometimes when i'm looking for a specific cache its easier to zoom the the area and spot it in the list! You are also limited to a maximum search area of 15miles so you have to zoom in until you see the caches. Otherwise this is a HUGE improvement!!!
  11. Blimey mate! You now have a fix before anyones noticed a problem! You could make a lot of money with that kind of service!!
  12. I agree. I'd add to that a little trick I picked up in Canada, which is very handy. If on a multi cache, you need to discover what values A,B,C,D,E,F are, then you need to use these values to locate the final cache, it would be comforting if the cache owner told you the sum total of A+B+C+D+E+F so you could cross check it. You would then have a great deal more confidence in knowing your coords were right before trooping off to find the cache. Some people do do this, however in some cases it would mean you can skip a clue by back working from the checksum.
  13. I think the point here is that if a note is added regarding the change anyone with it on their watch list will recieve an email. This will alert you to the change. However if no note is placed and you already have the details printed you may not notice. Of course this only works if you add all caches you plan to do to your watch list. Now I paperless cache I don't have this issue as I always download the latest data before going out, however when I used printouts I wouldn't reprint each time I headed out therefore missing out on any updates. It is sensible however to check each cache before you go out to ensure that the cache is still there and is being found.
  14. Technically speaking listing temporary caches is a No-No. If it is near the Scout HQ and you visit there regularly I see no reason why it can't stay long-term. If you intend this to just be for the troop then hide a box and hand them the coords at the meeting. As Trucker Lee says, letting them use the site introduces them to the sport/game/hobby* and they may end up staying wtih caching. This is only likely to cause problems if you have any members who are the sort that are likely to want to spoil the game and use their knowledge of the site to find and 'muggle' other caches. (There are proven cases of people getting an account purely to find and destroy cache!!) I say let them at it. And why not get the troop to hide a cache or two while you're at it! *Delete as appropriate
  15. Failling that we had some other great days caching in the Lakes. One was walking around Rydal Water. The other was some interesting caches around Little Langdale and a valley to the South (Linky).
  16. If you have the time to spend a day walking and taking in only 2 or 3 caches (depending on your bravery levels) my suggestion is to head into Great Langdale. Starting from the Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, head up to Stickle Tarn. If you fancy it try Rakers of the Lost Ark. I've not done it but having watched people climbing up from the tarn, i'd like to try one day. Or head around the back and upto High Raise (High Raise). Then the walk back takes you back to the top of the Langdale Pikes and back down the footpath passing Dungeon Ghyll. The view from the top of the Langdale Pikes is probably the most amazing and somewhat humbling view I know.
  17. I'm looking at this from the other side. I've not as yet placed any caches therefore I look at this question as to what I prefer for see on a cache page. And in true 'not causing a stink in the forums' way, i'm on the fence with it. As someone interesting in knowing about where I am and what i'm seeing I like to have some further information on the cache and its location. However, as a user of CacheMate on my Palm, longer cache descriptions can get truncated. Since most people put the 'waffle' first and the finish with any details on the cache it means losing the important bit if it is truncated. Therefore, if you do fall into the 'Waffle' category, please put the cache details/info first, then follow it with the extra details. That way everyone will have the details they need and the extra should they require it.
  18. I'm with Alistair on this one. Having recently bought a Geko for my partner, this would be a very handy utility. However I also find it quite confusing with only the G being dropped, and only in those that are 7 originally. I think it would be great to have a version that would always drop the GC. This way you know for certain what it happening. Chris.
  19. The more I think about it, I think we going at it the wrong way. If I found something in some woods/footpath and I had no idea what it was, thought it should be moved around, I wouldn't then leave it in a coffee shop. I might however leave it NEAR a coffee shop. I suspect that she hid it outside the shop somewhere. We're geocachers, surely we can have a good poke around near the coffee shop (whichever it may be) to see if its there. I do however also realise that 3 weeks is quite a long time for something to just be somewhere when its hiding place might not be as well thought out as it could have been (unless she had an obvious pile of sticks/stones with her)
  20. Same from me. One thing that might be worth thinking about is swapping the serial code box and the 'You can track me..." text. This will fit to the shape of the coin better and give a little more space around the web address so that the colouring sits around it nicely.
  21. I'll keep my eye on this thread as i'm in Basingstoke so a rescue mission isn't out of the question from here. I'll await further details.
  22. Of course you can! You found it, log it! As we speak i'm going through logging finds for my partner who now has her own username to keep track of the finds she has so all those that she has done with me in the past still count! Go ahead!
  23. Sounds like you have it right. The image must be hosted somewhere online before inserting into the post. Imageshack is fine, I use photobucket if its not already somewhere else. You then use the Insert Image button in the Add Reply screen.
