  1. As with most good pieces of software, there is definitely a learning curve for GSAK. Probably the best way to learn is to find a local cacher who can show you the basics. That way you can use it for the easy stuff while experimenting and learning the more involved uses.
  2. If you have GSAK on your PC, you can use a program called GDAK on your Android tablet to view the data (description/logs/hints etc) You can even have the database sorted by proximity with the Droid's gps turned on. You just copy your GSAK 'data' folders to your tablet, tell GDAK where to find them and you are good to go.
  3. I have heard that taking off the rubber antenna cover (which has the on-off button), putting a very small piece of rubber into the hole, and replacing the cover can buy you some time. I'm pretty close to having to do this myself.
  4. It seems that the cache you mentioned would be a good 'needs archive' candidate. But you really should visit the cache to make sure.
  5. when are you going to be back from Thailand ? Where would you be shipping from then ? I'm in Massachusetts in the United States. Since the electronics aren't working I don't really know what to offer for your 60cx. It would be nice to have an extra shell/screen but I don't know what it would be worth.
  6. I'm not sure if they are still available but you can check out this thread in the "GPS Garage Sale" forum. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=302181
  7. To quote a couple of bumper stickers "life's too short" "if it ain't fun why do it"
  8. Can someone explain to me why we should be able to log a find on a cache more than once ?
  9. Welcome to the hobby. Just to let you know, even after you get the gear and software and visit the links above, you won't always find the cache. Be prepare to not be able to find it.
  10. It's sort of scary, I was thinking of this exact thing over the weekend. I would LOVE to be able to give favorite points for good logs. I give it a thumbs up.
  11. What kind of death did your 60cx suffer ? I have a 60csx that works fine but it has some cosmetic issues with the case. Would you be looking to sell your non-working 60cx ? the3Gmen It will not locate satellites. I tried many fixes, but the internal firmware is stuck at version 0.00, apparently a well known bug, and it refuses to update although both Webupdater and manual firmware updates report success. The lettering is worn off the buttons too. I'm in Thailand for the next few months so it would be expensive to ship it anywhere, especially considering that it's dead LOL. I think I would have been happy using it for years more but it was not to be. The case is okay but very worn (the antenna "leg" where you would attach a lanyard is gone) but the screen looks good as it's had a Zagg Invisible Shield on it for a long time. If you're still interested, make me an offer. Shipping would take about 3 weeks and cost maybe $20, not sure. Contact me through email daveswarthout at gmail dot com I'll give it some thought and let you know. By the way, the "antenna leg" as you call it was never intended as a lanyard attachment. As you probably found out when it broke it is just rubber.

  13. Or you could create a separate GSAK database for your work PQ. Whichever way you want to group your PQs GSAK will do it for you.
  14. I don't have an answer for you but I do appreciate you posting this. I have been toying with the idea of getting a Chromebook in the near future and this is just one more datapoint to help me make my decision.
  15. My numbers have a little meaning to me but I doubt they do to anybody else. Other cacher's numbers don't hold much interest to me. (edited for spelling)
  16. If anyone is interested, I'll give an update. After a reset of the droid2, it was easy to set it up as a wifi only device, connect to my home network and load apps, including GDAK. I wirelessly copied my GSAK database (about 20,000 caches)and am up and running. An added bonus is that the droid2 has a real GPS which allows GDAK to sort the caches according to my location. I haven't checked to see how accurate the GPS is.
  17. As I was reading the replies to this thread, my son was looking over my shoulder and mentioned that he still has his old droid 2 that got replaced earlier this year. I'm going to see what I can do with it. Thanks for the suggestions
  18. I have an Android tablet that I run GDAK on and am happy with the paperless ability it gives me, even though I have no internet access in the field. The only problems I have is it's size and my fear that I'll drop it in the field. So I am looking to buy an inexpensive Android phone, mostly to use as a paperless caching device. I don't care about phone service on it. It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest. I want to load GDAK and will sync the cache data via wifi. Micro SD slot is a must (most phones in the last 5 years have one) A REAL gps would be nice but isn't necessary. Can anyone point me to a model that maybe they had a few years ago that would fit these needs ?

    gps

Actually, GDAK uses the GSAK data. As far as I've seen, it doesn't really look like GSAK.
  20. Is there a chance that a moderator could create a sticky thread about "FTF hogs" ? It seems that this topic comes up almost as often as the "which gps should I buy?"

A quick search lead me to this GDAK page which says that there is a program that allows you to convert your GPX files to something that GDAK can use. http://www.papktop.com/geocaching-droid-army-knife-1-35.html

Do you want to use the tablet as a gps device or just to view the cache data? I use GDAK on my Android tablet which allows me to transfer my GSAK databases so that I can view them when I am offline. I don't have much experience with the other Android apps but I would bet that they all have an option to import any .gpx file that you have.
  23. I've been using it for about 6 years and I don't know how I would get by without it. I have an Android tablet (internet access only via wifi) and the GSAK/GDAK combination gives me everything that I need when I am in the field
  24. I don't play the FTF game but if someone signs the sixth page of the logbook AND takes a picture of an empty first page of the logbook. I might consider that proof that they were FTF. To the original poster. As you can see there are many opinions about FTF. When I started caching I played that game for a while until I realized that being first to find wasn't much different than being 75th to find. The only REAL advantage to being first to find is that you are sure that you are finding the cache exactly as the cache owner placed it and there will be no "cache trail" giving you a hint. The down side is that you sometimes have to deal with bad (sometimes really bad) coordinates Enjoy the game and sign the logs any way you want to.
  25. Thanks for this info. I have recently had trouble turning my 60csx on, I've noticed that it is more of a problem when the device is warm (sitting in the car on a hot day) I have had plenty of experience taking this thing apart so pulling off the rubber top will be a piece of cake.
