  1. Thanks alot guys, we got it fixed.
  2. Well, since new folks were with you, I would call it a find. Even better, don't know the ages of the kids, but if old enough, have them create their own account and log the find to themselves.
  3. I bought my Etrex Legend new and when starting it's first operation, the unit asked for the owners name and pertinent contact information be installed on the opening screen when the unit is first turned on, so if the unit is lost, someone may know who it belongs to. I will be purchasing a Legend C tomorrow and my 11 yr old son will become the new owner of the Legend. He wants to change the contact information to his name.......How is this done? Thanks, Rick
  4. the hermit crabs- Hey thanks for that info. That is great and answered all my questions, side by side. Thanks alot, Rick
  5. $75.00 includes shipping to lower 48 states. My son is upgrading to my Legend, I am in the process of purchasing a Legend C. This camo unit works perfectly and the display screen is completely clear and free of any scratches. The body has no scratches, chips or dings. The camo paint applied at the factory does have 3 very small areas on the top front where the camo paint has been rubbed off slightly. I do not have a camera to take a picture of the actual unit and cannot figure out how to post the website photo of this camo unit where I used microsoft paint to show the 3 areas on the website photo of the worn areas. If interested, I can email you the touched up image I have saved to give you an idea of where the paint is rubbed off. Comes with Camo GPS unit, lanyard, original packaging, owners manual and quick start guide.
  6. I have the legend right now and have just about got it's features figured out. I am completely happy with it, but my son wants to beat me out of it. I am looking at a Legend C and asking this question: Are the features between the two about the same? I know the Legend C is a color screen but as far as how satisfied I am with the Legend, will I be as satisfied with the C? Thanks, Rick
  7. I turn hand made deer antler pens on my lathe as an income hobby. I have a huge box full of 2-3 inch cut-off tine tips that I have saved for some crazy reason. I just recently started making key rings by drilling and screwing an eye hook into the cut end of a tine, then adding a circular key ring. I have found that from some of the responses left by finders who took one, that they were very pleased with this, thus my new trade item to leave in cache sites.

  9. Bump-Bump Nobody know anything about the 72 or 76 compared to a Legend? Thanks again.
  10. I'd just like to thank those who have the same opinion in this matter that I have had. As for the sport of trade, I too could care less about this. It is the getting out, moving around from a sedentary life and seeing things that you might normally have never seen or discovered is what it means to me. It is my 11yr old that I am feeling sorry for. He was so excited to get our GPS's, to go shopping for cool trade items and looking so forward to opening a treasure box and finding good stuff inside to meet his expectations. He is the one that has come to the conclusion that it is not fair for him to leave his good stuff for garbage. I do and I try to show him that it is always better to give than to receive but in his eye, I can see where he is coming from too. Thanks for the responses. Rick
  11. Well, I'm not talking about hacking away or uprooting the stuff, just something to lift and look. In Texas, we are the proud breeders some of the largest rattlesnakes you've ever seen and personally, I don't like petting them when I stick a hand in there to look around.
  12. I have gone to 4-5 sites now where the cache is hidden in low, thick growing shrubbery or ground cover. Does anyone carry some sort of special gadget to help in pulling this stuff back and searching through it without doing damage? I think a rake would work great but might get park owners upset if they saw you carrying a rake and digging through their bushes with it.
  13. My Academy sporting goods store here in town has the Garmin 72 and 76 on sale. I noticed that both of these said "Marine" on the front but figure they also work on land too maybe. Anyways, I have a Garmin Legend I use and am trying to figure out if I need to buy something else for me and hand my Legend down to my son or just buy him a Legend also. Anyone have thoughts on what either the 72 or 76 would do for geo-caching compared to the Legend? Thanks again. Rick
  14. I have an Etrex Legend that I have been using for geo-caching. My son uses a little Etrex Camo that I got him off Ebay. It does seem that my legend has much better track to direct you to a site than the camo does. Before I bought the Legend, I was looking at the Magellan Meridian color screens. I am now contemplating giving my son the legend and purchasing the magellan for me. Would this be a good unit comparable to what I have, better or worse? Thanks I guess my question would be: Anyone who has used both the Legend and Magellan Meridian, what can you tell me pro/con between the two?
  15. Today, my 11yr old son and myself tackled some more geo-sites. We went to one on the outskirts of town in an abandoned business district. Had to park at a dead end road and walk another 1/4 mile to the coordinate site. The site is in a very thick, grown up brushy pasture filled with cactus and thorn bushes. There is no activity here any longer and nobody comes here. We get to the site and begin a search. A couple of minutes into the search and my son asks me what that big yellow thing is just 25-30 yards away from where we were searching. I get to looking through the trees and brush and discover it is a large tent, most likely a vagrant camp. Naturally, the Glock is up in the truck, so we beat a hasty retreat out of there. I just contacted the site owner via email. I should have seen his cache, as it was supposed to be a large and easy find and am figuring it got heisted by the hobo's plus wanted to inform him of the possible dangers of this site location. Anyone else ever stumble onto anything like this in your trips?
  16. Today while caching with my son, I noticed that my Etrex Legend would only obtain satellite signals while outside of the pickup. My son has the yellow etrex and his was working fine inside the cab of the truck as we drove around. Mine has always worked before without any problems in the cab. Was also wandering if maybe the Gov has restricted some of the usual satellites in lieu of the Iraq and now N. Korea problems and maybe this was causing what seemed like a loss of receiving power.
  17. I got my 11yr old son interested in this hobby so that we could spend some outdoor time together and after only scoring 17 finds so far, we're already getting burned out on this. It is not because it is not fun, it is because every find we've made so far has had pure JUNK in them for trade items. Granted we were not expecting $100 dollar bills or Snap-on tool sets, but give me a break, a broken Mickey D toy, a partial strand of beads, a marble, a nickel gumball machine spider ring and on and on. We spent several bucks on buying mini flashlights, pocket tools, nice key chains, games and many other small items that we were expecting to leave for like trade items. We have yet to find any trade item anywhere close to an item we would trade for and most I just sign the log and go on. If folks can afford the GPS units to use for this, the gas and time to drive around looking for these why can't they spend a little bit to make this a worthwhile venture of going home with some neat stuff and leaving something that someone else would be happy to have?
  18. Good deal. OK, thanks alot guys. I have several programmed in for this weekends hunting so hopefully we can claim a find on this one too when we visit it again.
  19. A couple of days ago my 11 yr old son and myself DNF'd a particular cache. I did find a piece of broken wood with some green duck tape and dried glue on it in an area that I figured the cache had been hidden in. I reported the possible muggled cache to the owner. He replied back to me later that evening saying the piece I had found was indeed from the cache, however the cache itself was still hidden in its hiding spot. He fixed the broken piece back onto it apparently. I never saw the cache itself where I thought it was, just found the broken off piece in a hollowed out log. Now if we go back to this location a second time and we do find the cache, what should I do about the response I have already left reflecting the DNF ? Thanks, Rick
  20. No sound in nature gets you more in touch with yourself than the sound of a really upset rattlesnake in the brush right at your feet........Been there, done that !!!
  21. Being new here and new to this hobby as well, I just have to ask this. I have just about got 3 cache boxes ready and a pretty good idea of where I am going to place them. So everything I am beginning to understand is that I register them, submit them and only then after doing this, someone has to approve them before they actually go onto the board? Thanks
  22. Ditto here on Sloflyers post. I bought the same GPS a couple of weeks ago and have not ventured to try this. Would also love the step by step process. Thanks
  23. There is a cache site here in my town that is strictly advertised by the cache owner as a "coin" cache and his request is that only trades be made with other U.S. coins or foreign coins. I have the cache marked with its waypoint and hope to visit it this weekend and do a little "coin" trading myself.
