And at the same time,it's a good idea to get in the habit of marking your parking co-ordinates as a waypoint. When you switch to "off road", just hold down the "enter" button long enough to create a waypoint. After a mile or so hike into unfamiliar territory, which might include a little bushwacking, it will make your adventure a more pleasurable one, knowing that no matter how many times you get turned around, & you will, you can always get back to your vehicle with no problem. In your preparations before heading out, also read up on & practice the use of the "track back" option and the use of your track on the map page. Nothing can put a damper on a great caching adventure like that feeling in your gut when you've found the cache, but have no idea how to get back to where you started from. . Especially if you're losing daylight. Have a great time & be safe. "Gimpy"
  2. My avatar is the jpg. that I sent to stampman to have my stamp made up. 2 inch round , self inking. Been using it for over a year now, & still going strong. Ordered it at the same time I got my wheresgeorge.com stamp. Even came with a little bottle of ink to reapply as needed. 2" dia. by about 4 1/2" long, so a little bulky to carry in a pocket, but sits just fine in the backpack. Use it in the log book of every cache I visit, & stamp the front of the logbook for every cache I place. "Gimpy"
  3. quote:Originally posted by sswany:well that sucks. thanks for the info though. now i don't know why i have the III+. V here I come. Hey Scott. Don't be in a hurry to kick the III Plus to the curb. I've got the V for road navigation, & aside from the Street Pilot III, I think the V is the best unit for that purpose. III Plus won't do you a whole lot of good on the road, but when it comes to heading into the woods after a cache,in my opinion, the III Plus is one of the best units out there for locking on satellites under tree cover. Not a whole lot of mapping storage capacity, but a great unit. Go for the V, but keep the III Plus too. "Gimpy"
  4. quote:Originally posted by rfriel1:does WAAS do anything in a gpsr? i haven't heard much talk about WAAS in this forum. is WAAS totally useless and not worth any gpsr that is WAAS enabled? any ideas or opinions? I guess it all depends on what you're doing with your gpsr. My guess is that if you're going after benchmarks, waas might give you a bit of an advantage, because the co-ordinates for the benchmark were probably taken with some sophisticated equipment. But for geocaching purposes, I would think that the majority of caches were given listed co-ordinates that were taken off non-waas equipped gpsr's. If that's the case, I don't see where waas would be of any help. Throw in an overhead canopy of tree cover, & I'd have to believe that the wass bird(s) would be that much more difficult to lock on to anyway. 2 of my gpsr's have waas, but I leave it turned off on both. Nothing real scientific about my rationale. I figure it just makes sense. Could be wrong. It's happened once or twice. "Gimpy"
  5. Paid the $75.00 for my gmrs license to get something with a little more range than my frs radios. Picked up a gmrs, & 2 weeks later, took the test & got my ham license. Picked up a real nice HT, & now have all the bases covered. "Gimpy"
  6. Sounds like a great plan, AR. But now I've been sitting in front of my PC for the last 15 minutes, at almost 6:00 am, watching your cam refresh every 10 seconds. . Hope you catch em'. "Gimpy"
  7. It's real limited on memory capacity, but of all the Garmins that I have/had, it's by far the best at holding a lock under heavy tree cover. I don't even take the Street Pilot or V into the woods, so not sure about them. Use them for road navigation only. But the V being built on the same body/antenna system as the III Plus, I would think it would hold a lock real well. Never really tried the eMap in the woods either. Have that one mainly because it has the data card option. I keep a 64mb data card in it, loaded with Metroguide maps for pretty much the whole Northeast. Never know when it might come in handy. My main unit I use for heading into the woods, is the MAP76. Does a real good job of holding a lock, & if it starts to lose lock, I just connect the external antenna, & that will almost always cure the problem. If the stuff is so thick that even that doesn't do it, I'll pull out the III Plus, & it will do the job flawlessly 95% of the time. Had & sold an eTrex Vista. Up in my neck of the woods, the Vista was rendered useless even in medium tree cover. "Gimpy"
  8. I run Norton Systemworks 2003 Professional & also paid for ZoneAlarm Pro. But you can download the free version of ZoneAlarm at the bottom of the page here: Zonelabs.com Kind of like a belt & suspenders thing. I have Norton set to make automatic updates for Virus protection, but even then, you're still at somewhat of a risk. But I've been running like this for a long time now, & have escaped the grasp of the dreaded virus mongers. Sorry to hear about your stuff, opey. "Gimpy"
  9. Vest order placed on the 19th, shipped the 22nd & on the UPS tracking details, states that expected delivery is Dec. 2nd. Either the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend is throwing a wrench into delivery schedules, or it's coming from Washington State to NY by way of a 63' Chevy. "Gimpy"
  10. When I go to checkout, it gives me a hard time. Made purchases before with no problem. "Gimpy" Edit: Went into internet options & again enabled cookies for Groundspeak.com, & order went thru fine. Thanks, Jeremy.
  11. Got mine here. Stampman .Came out very nice. "Gimpy"
  12. I've placed 26 caches that have been logged roughly 900 times. The caches range from 3/4s to 1/2s. I would say that the majority are in the 2/3 range. We've got a whole lot of families around here that enjoy taking their little kids caching, & the easier ones are geared towards them, & I generally state that on the cache pages. None of the easier ones are even close to being drive-bys, but are more of 1/4 - 3/4 mile hike, with no mountain climbing or really heavy bushwacking involved. I only place them in areas that have some significant aesthetic or historical value, and in areas where the grounds won't get trampled. I've had a few logs, where the cacher stated that the cache was too easy, & I couldn't care less. The overwhelming majority, probably 99%, have reflected that the cache outing was very enjoyable. That's what it's all about. Some folks like to come home with tales of near the edge adventure, & some like to come home after spending an enjoyable day with the family. I try to place caches that will benefit each group. It all comes down to, if you don't like one of my caches, don't go after it. If you do, & want to complain, try to find someone that cares to complain to. I'm sure we all know someone that has to complain about something or they're not happy. "Gimpy"
  13. I've got Mapsource Topo, Roads & Recreation, Metroguide 3.0, Metroguide 4.01, City Select 4.0 & City Select 4.01 all loaded on the HD. Have not touched a Mapsouurce CD in months. A click of the mouse, & I can view a map section from any one of the sources. Saves an amazing amount of time. "Gimpy"

  16. I'm with BrianSnat. I've gotten 50 from cheaperthandirt, & all have been in excellent condition. Some of my caches have been out for over 1 1/2 yrs., and the cans look like I put them out last week. Of the 26 I've put out so far, I've never had 1 that had any moisture in it. I've been very satisfied. cheaperthandirt Shipping is very reasonable & delivery has always been quick. "Gimpy"
  17. Should look great on the cachemobile! "Gimpy"

  21. quote:Originally posted by CreagerStone Family:Hi everyone, Anyway, it has tinted windows. I don't know if it's factory tint, but the rear window is pretty dark. I would guess that the window cling decal would not show through it very well. Can anyone tell me if that's a correct assumption? Even if you know it's there, it's next to impossible to see in the rear window of my Pontiac Transport Van with tinted windows. But you know what? Every time I look in my rear view mirror, it's the first thing I see. "Gimpy"
  22. Try posting here Jeffery:thread .Or here:thread . I bet you'll get a real good answer there. "Gimpy"
  23. Harrald.I'm running easygps version 1.1.862 & this method works fine. What I did find, when I first tried it, is that when I hit "save as" in the file drop down menu,(after opening the easygps file)& the dialog box came up, I had to name the file first & then change the file type to gpx. If I changed the file type first, & then gave it a name, it wouldn't save it. Not sure when I got this easygps version, or if it's the latest, but works great. Good luck. "Gimpy"
