  1. This is NOT a scientific study, nor is it a comparison between units. Some folks have been saying the GPSV can't maintain signal lock in adverse conditions. Well, imagine my surprize when I went out to the car this morning, where I had left my V in the closed center console, well under the metal roof of the vehicle... and looked at the V... YMMV. -Centaur
  2. I have never owned anything but a V, which I got because I wanted the auto routing and rerouting features. I have nothing to compare it with, but all I can say is it has always got me to the cache, and the few times it does lose lock, it picks it right back up again quickly. I did try it in my in-laws car the otherday on the dashboard. My in-laws car must be one of them with the metallic windshield covering because I coudl hardly get any signal through the glass. I got enough to get me where I was going, but the lock was poor. I moved the V from off the dash and held it out the drivers window (once i was parked silly!) and the signals trippled and more sats locked up. So you have to watch some of the cars when using a GPS on the dash, there are some that have a transparent metalic coating that kill the sat signals through the glass.

I ask because I found a dessicant packet in a bag of beef jerky and it was pretty small. I would think for an ammo can sized or Tupperware sized container you would need a somewhat larger packet to retain more moisture. Cache you later, Planet Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right, But Three Lefts Do. Hiya Planet! Nice Fish BTW... These are 10 Gram Silica Gel Desiccant packs. They are 3.25" by 1.5" by 0.5" thick at the midpoint. One fits nicely nearby any log book in its baggie, and perhaps anoter in a cache generally to keep the dampness down. Of course they do no good at all if the cache container does not seal well or is cracked or busted. And these can be heated in an oven to dry them out and reuse them. I have started to place a few around. One for the cache itself, and a baggie with some in for trade items. -Centaur
  4. You prolly found the checkbox on the serial port setup tab that tells Mapsource to NOT upload the routing data. Fix that checkbox the way you like. Now, Im trying to get Garmin to ADD a checkbox to selectivly NOT upload the POI data, thus saving more room for maps. The more people writing to Garmin the better. Maybe they will add that box. I woudl rather have more maps with routing data loaded then all the restaurants and POI. -Centaur
  5. Most cool. Thanks for the hard work!
  6. The way some of the store alarms work is with the little thin tags that are just 2 strips of metal. They can only be a form of resonator. The exciter is sending out a frequency that the resonator strip would resonate at and thus rereadiate a small amount of energy back. That energy is what trips the alarm. So any metal parts that are near each other of the right size and spacing might resonate at that alarm frequency and DING! off goes the alarm...

  9. You have to be carefull to remember that Degrees are a unit of angular measurement, and only translate into psyical distances when maped to the globe. "Accurate" would not be the right term to use. You are asking about Precision or Resolution. Lets see if this helps for some: Assume that "Resolution" indicated how many different psyical points can be created and displayed within ONE UNIT. In this case, we will use ONE DEGREE as the Unit. Therefor, in one degree you can specify ONE point. Next, shifting to Minutes, which are by definition 1/60 of a Deg, you could specify 60 points witin a degree. But using 2 decimal places for a minute you can have 60 x 100 = 6000 points then. So MM.MM gives 6000 points within a degree. Using 3 decimal places is 60 x 1000 for 60,000 points within a degree. Next is Deg/Min/Sec. Which by definition a second is 1/60 of a Minute. So there are 60 seconds in a min, and 60 min in a deg. So thats 60 x 60 = 3600 individual points you can have within a Degree. Lastly, there is Deg.ddddd A degree to 5 decimal places. Thats 100,000 points within one degree. By far the biggest number of points you can specify within the unit, so it has more Resolution then any of the other formats. So a recap, from least resolution to most - DEGREE 1 D MM SS 3600 D MM.MM 6000 D MM.MMM 60000 D.DDDDD 100000 Got it?
  10. Did we get Slash/Dot'ed or something? Did an article or news piece hit the streets?
  11. I experimented with my V connected to my laptop when we went on vacation. See here.
  12. So we need to send email to garmin asking for: 1) To return the "Don't send autorouting data" check box to a place we can select it if we manually wish to not download that data. and 2) To add a checkbox to manually not download the POI data, so we can cram more maps with autorouting info into the V. Im sending my email now....
  13. A new mapsource beta is available at www.garmin.com A long list of fixes and a few tweaks. If you have a GPSV, I have been asking garmin for a tweak to Mapsource to allow for NOT uploading the POI (restraunts, hotels, etc) info to make more room available for maps and turn-by-turn info. Please take a moment and send some feedback to Garmin to ask for this feature in new versions of mapsource. Thanks! -Centaur

  16. And remember: Anyone who takes any of this seriously... Deserves to.
  17. Seven message replys before a simple question that was asked gets the correct answer. What a fine bunch of folks we are. Can we do a little better for the new folks? We were all newbies once you know.

I myself have only been caching a few months, but I have found that 99% of the folks are great and good people. Just like anything in the world, there will be lamers and jerks. Sorry you seem to have found a few of them so close to home. I just had my first cache plundered, no fun. Looks to have been holloween hooligans who found it and trashed it. At least it does not appear to have been by another cacher, though as you found out it can happen. All I can do is offer my best wishes and support and hope you continue to cache and enjoy the game.
  19. See? Who said Jeremy was on vacation? Jeremy - Thanks for the improvements!
