  1. Despite the great pains that the reviewers take to always refer to themselves as "volunteers," they really are only in the sense that they do so without remuneration. They are asked to become reviewers by Groundspeak, and they act as semi-official representatives of Groundspeak. I admire the reviewers greatly. They work hard and perform a valuable service. However, I believe that the constant reference to them as "volunteers" gives the misleading impression that they either chose themselves or were chosen by their local geocaching community. Neither is true. I was asked if I would like to volunteer. In my mind that makes me a Volunteer. I wouldn't have it any other way. I was not told I would be a reviewer the choice was given to me. There is nothing wrong with being asked to volunteer. I could have said no. I was an official rep for the BSA while I was a volunteer. I was asked to Volunteer by the BSA also. Its not an uncommon practice.
  2. I really think this post hits the nail on the head. I say it is time to sent Signal up to the top of Mt. Hood and not let him come down until he has a couple of tablets with the RULES of geocaching engraved on them. You would not like the results. Remember the folks that got the first 10 rules didnt like them either.
  3. Did anything come of the statement that most of the caches were pre-found(located) before the run started. Thereby saving more time that could have been used to sign the logs? If so I would love a markwell.
  4. That is a virtual grave site. The body is buried in Colorado. Encased in cement because the Wy guys kept trying to steal it.
  5. The page is locked. The owner cant, at the moment, make any changes.
  6. There is not an official area for cache adoptions. You normally cannot adopt archived caches. If you want to give back to your community, Place Quality hides, not Quantity ones. Do a CITO once a year. Help with your local cache org. Start one if there isn't one. Offer to volunteer at your local schools to help teach GPS usage. There are lots of ways.
  7. A couple of points.. These two parts contradict each other. If its not for Glory why was there so much effort put into announcing the record!!! That sounds like Glory hounds to me. From what you wrote at the end are you saying "oops, My bad" "Let's let the record stand anyway"? Is that a correct reading? Now the only one that can answer that question is TAR so please everyone don't respond with "Well what I think he meant was...." Lets hear it from the person that wrote it.
  8. A quick search of he US Governments Trademark Site shows: Word Mark GEOCOIN Goods and Services (ABANDONED) IC 006. US 002 012 013 014 023 025 050. G & S: Medallions for collecting, trading, and leaving in a geocache. Mark Drawing Code (1) TYPED DRAWING Design Search Code Serial Number 78113951 Filing Date March 11, 2002 Current Filing Basis 1B Original Filing Basis 1B Type of Mark TRADEMARK Register PRINCIPAL Live/Dead Indicator DEAD Abandonment Date February 10, 2003 I do not know why the attempted registration was abandoned. As far as I'm concerned, the person entitled to a trademark on the term would be Moun10Bike, since he's the one that started this madness. Abandonment - Failure To Respond Or Late Response thats what the file says is the reason.
  9. I had the coin minted through personalgeocoins and he took care of all of that for me. From what I understand, just as long as I'm not out to make a profit from the coin I'm ok. Thank you
  10. Nice looking coin. How were you able to get copyright clearance for the Casper the Ghost figure on the front. Ive got an Idea that uses another of the Characters from the series and would like to know who to contact for the clearance.
  11. The Quote is from Sidney J. Harris. Arrogance like Ignorance is not an insult. Ignorance is simply not knowing and Arrogance is Human nature. It is not an insult. It is a result of beint right at least once in your life and remembering that fact. If Arrogance were a crime I would have been in jail by the time I was 16. No insult intended. The quote fit the circumstances.
  12. Nobody can be so amusingly arrogant as a young man who has just discovered an old idea and thinks it is his own.
  13. Exactly. This is the main reason I discounted that as an option when I made my suggestion. Having someone at Groundspeak maintain a page of (what will likely be hundreds before we know it) icons is too much to ask. In response to RK and the naming convention, I went back and saw some are .gif, some are .jpg so I just added them manually. Not sure why some were .jpg and some were .gif, but if this is a project that webscouter./Icon SP wants to tackle, this seems to be the easiest way. Thank you. Someone got it
  14. Judging by the recent update to the coin tracking policy I'd say that Groundspeak already is jumping through hoops for the geocoin community. The key word is quickly. It always amusing when something becomes an idea that Groundspeak just HAS to do and it doesn't happen instantly. People get bent out of shape. The "TPTB" don't care or all the other stuff they love to complain about. The policy you speak of did not happen over night. It took a lot of time and effort from many people to get it decided and worded properly. I am only saying, and perhaps not very well, that any new idea if accepted takes time and people need to learn to wait. Just because nothing is said doesn't mean that nothing is being done.
  15. Very nice. I think that would do the trick very well and let Webscouter keep up. As long as Groundspeak keeps up with the same naming convention or works with webscouter to make sure he's current. It is a service to the community and a good one. I don't even collect Icons and like that it's there. Its not a service to the community. Its only a service to those that care about icons or what they look like. That is hardly the entire community. Maybe not, but it is A community, and one that I am part of. So, it is a service to us, and I for one appreciate the h$%@ out of it! And that is perfectly fine. I liked the icon page myself. It simply helps to remember that the coin community is only a part of the Geocaching community and not the whole thing. This will help people understand that if Groundspeak does not quickly jump through hoops for the coin community it may be that they are busy working for the community as a whole.

  17. Or, just forget the whole thing. Its not like its a need. Cachers will still find caches if you don't have all the icons on a page. Perhaps this is a good time to let the page go and do something else with your time. Its just a thought. Wrong thread. You were looking for the whining thread. Don't you hate it when people play different games than you? No but I do dislike when someone takes what I said and tries to make it into something else. Its not a whine. Its a suggestion. A whine would have to include my personal opinion about the subject and possibly other negative factors. As for playing games differently than me that is not even a factor. I'm one of the guys that makes sure you guys can play your games the way you like. Within the published guidelines. Thanks for playing.

  19. well if your brother has been around the site for 2 years he can tell you who I am. Providing he lives in Colorado. The key is to not anger the people we are trying to convince that geocaching is an ok thing on their land.
  20. You need to attend a few events. There you will find that there are people who work on getting things changed One of the local cachers spent 5 month and about 200 hours of their personal time to get one county to change its caching policys. Another has spent almost a year working with another county on their policys. The land managers read thes forums. You come in, having been here for 3 days and decide to shake things up. All you do is damage when you start by saying how you do not follow rules you do not like. Spend some time, find some caches and then offer to help in the local caching group. Put the energy to good use instead of just trying to stir the pot. First, go find some caches. Nobody can be so amusingly arrogant as a young man who has just discovered an old idea and thinks it is his own
  21. Well Im sure you local reviewer will be happy to see that you dont follow the rules/laws/guidelines you dont like. The rest of us in Colorado will stick to the rules/laws/guidelines because we care for the sport and want to see it continue. Good luck
  22. There are charities out there that could better benefit from the $100, rather than giving it to someone who owns a $150-$400 GPSr unit. So does this mean that you are going to sell your GPSr and donate the money to a charity. Seems only fair that you should be willing to put actions behind your words.
  23. Have you ever played a board game like Monopoly? Are the FAQ's printed on every square? No! They're on a separate page. Guess what? This site is set up the same way. In fact, most of the Internet is. When you're new to a board, you should look for the FAQ's first. If you don't find the answer to your particular question, then ask away. edit: Sorry if that sounded a bit harsh, that wasn't my intent. I own a second edition Monopoly set (1937) and one from 2004 neither of them have FAQ's anywhere.
  24. I have to ask. Why should I or anyone else care how many times someone logs a cache. If the cache owner is ok with it then its none of my business.
