  1. So sometimes I'm reading the cache descriptions and it will say things like "just North of..." when it really is a few miles Northeast of the place or somebody will say it's in the "Town of ...." when really a community in and/or near the town might have that name -- or a school or other location -- but the town name is clearly shown by a map, and displayed on sites physically as a different name. For example, someone says "just north of the beautiful town of Newark" when really the cache is Northeast of Newark, which is a village in the Town of Arcadia.

Other times people will say its in the "small town of [community name]" but really the size of the community land and population does not show it is small nor is it a town (its a village or even a hamlet or other census-designated area where the town has a completely different name).

I know sometimes the towns have the same name as the community but usually they are different. Should reviewers be geographically checking the data or let the cachers reading the description decide for themselves what is geographically correct and what is geographically misleading?

Just to keep things straight, how far is a 'just" What is the governing body that sets the standard for "just". Is there a fine for violating the distance of a 'just"? How much is the fine? Perhaps you could volunteer to be the "just" police for GSP. Lighten up Francis.

  2. I looked at the servers and everything seems ok at the moment. Ill keep an eye on it for a while but we look fine at this point.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Thank you,

  3. It comes from the fact that Daylight Saving Time is more difficult for Americans to pronounce than Daylight Savings Time. The "s" on Savings allows the words to flow together better for many speakers. It's still wrong, though.

The purpose (according to the government, anyway) is to "save daylight". Hence, Daylight Saving Time.

  4. It was just a suggestion, I see I have stumbled on yet another forum that is full of people who take delight in picking apart others suggestions to make themselves look clever.

Or you stumbled on a forum that doesn't expect posters to be ultra sensitive. Look at the times both posts were being added at the same basic time.

Sheesh, lighten up Francis. Both posts were just adding to what you said. They were helpful not attacks.

  5. This sounds like the screen protectors for the PDAs. Any difference?

I assume they are a little clearer. I just had my wife cut and fit a Fellows Write Right shield that I use on my IPAQ. She did a great job and it works great. If there is a difference in clarity I can not see it. Its good enough for what I need.

  6. Well my dividend notice for REI came today so I think I am ready to get the 400T with the firmware update.

I have been looking through the FAQs but I have not been able to find where memory cards are addressed. Am I missing it? What I am looking for is what size and kind will work. Will the HDSD (or whatever they are called) work?

Has anyone figured out for sure the issue of some have more internal memory than others and how to get one with the 4 gig internal?

    Thanks to all

The information on memory and SD card support is in the General Information section.

Garmin claims that the Colorado will support 4GB SD cards and I haven't seen anyone report issues with 4GB SDHC cards. There are some reports that 8GB SDHC cards work but it isn't clear to me whether the entire card works or not.

As for getting a 4GB 400t (vs a 3GB 400t) I think that will be difficult. It seems like most of the new ones are 3GB. There is some information about serial numbers in the FAQ that might help you locate one if you have the opportunity to select a low number number unit.

Dont know if this helps but this is a new 400T s/n 18xx its got 4gig base memory.

  7.

The difference is that one way is correct (entering them in the order I found them), and the other way is not.

Its correct for you, not me. I want them listed the way they are. Thats correct for me.

Perhaps its not a bug and its not a feature its just the way it is. All the complaining and whining isn't going to change something that isn't broken. Just because you think its broken doesn't mean it is broken. It is what it is.

Lighten up Francis. Its not broken.

  8. My "Pending Friend Requests" currently has 7 geocachers whom I have invited to be my friend, but haven't accepted. I know it's "not about the numbers," but can ya beat that?

    330d1zl.jpg

    Check your Pending Friend Requests.

So this is a contest to see how many people do NOT want to be your friend??? I'll help. Send me one and Ill ignore you too. :)

I'll bet we can find lots of people that don't want to be your friend.

I have to admit this may be the silliest numbers game yet.

  9. But you cannot delete the routes themselves. I know that there is evidently no limit, but it would be nice if it were possible clean up old (possibly erroneous) routes.

Shouldn't they fix the old stuff before they bring out new stuff?

Since the "new stuff" is important there is a good chance they need the "New stuff" to fix the old stuff.

  10. The following comments are taken from this closed thread. Which I deliberately made because there are many threads about this subject!!

You must be new here. :):)

Nope I am not new here. You just have to look beneath my avatar to see how many posts I have made and how long I have been a member.

    What does NAFF mean? :(

    Wikipedia article

If that's what the OP meant, it surely seems inappropriate for this forum. I hope it means something else.

The first two descriptions in the wiki link are the common usage of the word NAFF.

The second explanation explains how it was meant within my comments.

I am offended that you have taken the third or fourth explanation as what I meant. The way I wrote it within the text should have showed otherwise.

To give you some idea to how benign the word is, it was used as a designer label for several years.

And even when they do, they never say when a feature will be implemented or a bug fixed.

IMHO, Unfortunately, that is the problem. Making changes without informing your customer base is not wise business practice. I understand they are working on new code and such but when they do implement it the customers will be informed first.

You are correct that is the BIG problem. Why does it take a member to inform us, why can't Groundspeak just say that. Very bad business practice. Or is it the fact they hold the main monopoly over the hobby and they don't actually care? I hope I am wrong on that?

Sheesh Its frigging Tupperware in the woods. Stop acting like its life or death. take a break, go caching, go chase butterflies, read a book, get drunk, do something that allows you to lighten up a little.

  11. If I were him, I might think about ignoring my boss and sneaking the change in anyway . Just imaging all the kudos the programmer will get when this feature starts to work

And will you be hiring him and paying for his move to the new job should he get fired for insubordination? Its all well and good to suggest someone disobey a directive at work but unless you plan on taking care of their financial needs after that its probably not a smart idea. To suggest that someone sneak in and go against the employers wishes is a bad suggestion and could get someone fired or at the very least written up for not following the wishes of the people paying his salary. All in all this was a bad idea.

  12. Could the Watchlist page be modifed to say, at the top of the list:

Geocaches on your watch list: Total <N>

    Thanks!

    Nick

Maybe its a french thing but wouldnt it be better if it said the actual number instead of <N>? <N> just seems like a waste of work. I mean what good does a letter do anyone? B)B)

  13. trainlove,

Is there anything about the site that you *do* like?

I'm sorry, where did Imake a complaint in this post?

You should not be in the forums if all you can do is pick a fight for no reason.

Sometimes it what you say, Sometimes its how you say it. In your case its all of the above. You have a habit of making your suggestions sound like demands and your comments sound like you are taking shots. Like this one.

Now, please, please... Make sure that any web site changes go through Quality Control after a long Design Review process and Software Revision Control. Just kidding here, sort of!

You were not kidding at all you just added it to try to not get warned by the mods. Go to the Library, check out the book "How to win friends and influence people" come back when you have mastered the concept. Then maybe your "suggestions" will be better received.

No disrespect intended, it is a suggestion to make you a better forum poster.

  14. YOU NEED TO HAVE FASTER BOOKMARKING. ALSO you should have KML export option for querries

I believe word you are looking for is "Please". Also SHOUTING doesn't really sit well.

    Thank you.

  15. The other day I found a cache container which had been coated with a preservative, and after handling the cache, then getting back into the car I realized that my hands smelled a lot of the preservative, to the point that I was quite distracted by the smell.

This made me wonder if this was such a good idea, coating a cache container in a preservative coating. Has anyone here ever run across another cache preserved in this way? Any ideas on whether this should be done? The preservative in this case is Recochem’s Copper II Green Preservative, Copper Napthenate suspended in a petroleum distillate solution.

This cache was actually in a children's playground, low enough that anyone playing in the playground could come in contact with it.

I wrote to the cache owner but did not get a response for 2 days so I then posted a note about it, to which the owner took offense. Since I had no idea what the preservative was at the time I wrote the note, I thought it was best to warn others who might venture out to the cache to be prepared, and bring work gloves.

Was this justified or was I over-reacting?

    Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hide

I would like to know which cache this is. either posted here or in a pm please. This product is also a pesticide.

    Osmose MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET

    SECTION VIII - CONTROL MEASURES

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: None normally required if good ventilation is maintained. Use a MSHA/NIOSH approved dust high

efficiency filter respirator when sawing or machining treated wood.

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS: Ventilate via mechanical methods (general or local exhaust) to maintain exposure below

TLV(s), if applicable. Good industrial hygiene practice dictates that indoor work areas should be isolated and provided with

    adequate local exhaust ventilation.

PROTECTIVE GLOVES: Wear industrial type gloves.

EYE PROTECTION: Safety glasses, goggles or face shield. Do not wear contact lenses.

OTHER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING OR EQUIPMENT: None normally required. Use as necessary to prevent exposure.

WORK/HYGIENIC PRACTICES: Wash thoroughly after skin contact and before eating, drinking, use of tobacco products or using restrooms.

  16. Yep, that was rude of him. Micros are harder to maintain properly because the smaller logs fill up more quickly.

To get even with him, I recommend visiting all his regular-sized caches, and signing both the physical logbook and the online log with "TNLN, TFTC."

By responding in this fashion, the log that was too big will have its karma balanced out by the log that was too small. This balanced karma will then blossom elsewhere. Before you know it, we will have peace in the Middle East, disarmament on the Korean peninsula, and cross-site romances between Geocachers and Terracachers that would put "West Side Story" to shame.

It all begins with you, and it's an awesome responsibility. Don't blow it.

Ok But, we get to be the Sharks. They were way cooler than the Jets.

  17. i think it would increase sales some people might not like the regular TB's and not like any coins they see and think i want to make my own but for a low price i dont want to buy 250 for a 1.50 maybe i want 10 for a 1.50

Why don't you just write Groundspeak, tell them how many you want to buy and ask if they will sell them to you? That way you get a real answer instead of all the guess's that people make here? Write Contact@geocaching.com and ask the source.

  18. If you place a cache can you keep it in your house and only let people "find it" by having them email you to make an appointment...and at that point you place the cache outside at the given time. Then take it back in your house once the appointment time has passed?

As the owner of the Wisconsin DeLorme cache, I can understand not leaving the cache out 24/7. Since nobody can hunt the cache unless I give them the coordinates, and nobody gets the coordinates unless they finish the series, there's no reason to leave the cache out all the time and risk a muggling.

However... by doing this, I am putting the responsibility on myself to check the validity of a potential finder's finds and resetting the cache in a timely manner. I don't require an "appointment". I'll place the cache, then send out the coordinates. I'll pick up the cache after it gets logged online.

What about those that have already found the cache and want to revisit? Why should they be required to make an appointment to visit a cache they already earned the right to visit?
