  1. I tried letterboxing at the same time I first tried geocaching. I liked geocaching better mainly because of the online logs. Without the online logs, you don't know if what you're looking for is still there or not. It got pretty discouraging looking for and not finding letterboxes that were probably long gone. I think the online log system accounts for why goecaching grew in popularity faster than letterboxing over the last decade. For some reason, letterboxers were resistant to the idea of online status reports/logs back then, I think that's changed a little these days, but too little, too late. When I started geocaching in 2006, both online logs and written logs were longer. I think both micros and the sheer number of caches out there discourage long logs. When finding one single cache was an event, you were more likely to spend more time on the logs. Today, when caches are more plentiful and some people find 10 to 40 a day, who wants to spend so much time on any one log entry? [edited and expanded for clarity]
  2. Signing of the actual log sheet is the only true proof that you actually took the time to make the find.... Would you accept a photograph as proof? I've taken pictures when I didn't have a pen with me.
  3. EYE DEE MEE GC1K291 At least I can see what needs to be done to solve it. If it was around here, I'd probably do the research. There's some puzzles around here that I can't even figure out what needs to be done or how to start. One's gone unfound for 6 months. (GC2335G)
  4. Am I the only person who actually *likes* nanos?! Sure tupperware / ammo boxes are good, but I like searching for tiny caches hidden in plain sight. The best ones are where you can walk by the cache location and see it sitting there and yet nobody else can! I agree. The ones that are "hidden" in plain sight are cool. OTOH, I don't really like having to feel around in places I can't see.
  5. It seems like FTF prizes are completely optional around here. I was FTF on 2 caches, and was with a FTF'er on another, no prizes. I also didn't leave anything special for the FTF on the caches I hid, I just tried to stock them with a few interesting swag items. A $1 president coin might be cool if you feel the need to leave something extra. Magnets or keychains from another state sound good too.
  6. I just restocked the bag - 2 key chains Golf ball (new) hot wheels car lanyard dice LED flashlights small plastic airplane plastic police badge many pens and mechanical pencils rubber lizard small rubber ball I think I'd die of embarrassment if I had to go through a security checkpoint where I had to have this bag inspected.
  7. You do know it's gotten the "under consideration" tag on the feedback site, right?
  8. Do you provide a writing utensil in your caches? A cut down golf pencil fits in a filmcan size container or even in a magnetic hide-a-key. I've even seen a pop-point glued to a toothpick in a bison tube. If you really want people to sign, make it easy for them to do so. If that's too much trouble for you, then I say "get over it".
  9. Some of my favorite caches have had 4-star difficulty ratings because of their camouflage. Many of those have been micros and nanos, and not all of the nanos have been blinkers. They aren't always "needle in a haystack" hides. For the really good ones, you don't even have a haystack. You can search "everywhere it could possibly be hidden" in about 10 minutes, and then you have to figure out how/where the cache owner actually hid it. first of all i would like to say we would just like to be told somewhere in the description that we are looking for a nano! if they would tell us that then we would not have any problems! Yeah, tell me what I'm looking for and don't hide it in, on or under a garbage can and then nanos can be fun.
  10. Even if I don't have a real camera with me, I will (almost) always have a cell phone camera with me because I (almost) always carry my phone. It's not great, but it would be enough to ID a cache container and hiding spot.
  11. Great tip that I haven't heard before. Thanks!
  12. A .loc file can be used to automatically load coordinates into some GPS units. It has the basic information like the cache name and coordinates. Compare to .gpx files which are available to premium (paying) members and contain most of the information from the cache listing page.
  13. I was constantly leaving my pencil behind. Then I got a couple mini writing utensils, a pencil and a pen less than 4 inches long. That's short enough to keep in my pocket all the time. Now I ALWAYS have a pen or pencil with me, not just caching.
  14. Disappearing PQ I created a new PQ. I hit the check box for Saturday to run it right now. It ran, I got the email. I went to the PQ ready for download tab and saw the file but noticed I did not check the box to include the PQ name in the download file name. Edited the PQ to change that and the went back to the download tab, and tried to click on the PQ result file. Got an error message that the file is not available for download. Refreshed the screen and it's vanished. If I didn't have the emailed copy, I'd be really annoyed.
  15. I've seen some statements that Picaridin is effective against ticks. Picaridin is considered a alternative to Deet against mosquitoes, it is somewhat safer and more pleasant than Deet to use. http://www.picaridin.info Anyone have experience with it or more information?

    Feedback?

I like it. I like that TPTB are responding with the planned, not planned, under consideration tags. I think more people will see and use the feedback thingy than this forum. I also think it will cut down on all the repetitive threads in this forum. I just wish the default was to NOT follow a subject, I got flooded with email updates before I saw how to turn them off.
  17. my modest contribution to the theme --- from near GC1KPA4
  18. An excellent idea! Got my vote too.
  19. As the guy above (post 18) said, Ezy Dose Pill Pouches from a pharmacy. About 2 x 3 inches. If you don't like that size, there's always eBay or craft stores.
  20. Is it OK to assume some upper body dexterity? Like being able to lean forward or to a side and reach up or under something?
  21. I was FTF twice, got to one in about 45 minutes, I think it was the next day before anyone else found it. My other FTF was several hours after publication. I've seen some FTFs around here go in 5 or 10 minutes, so I thought I'd never have a chance, but lately some have been staying out for a day or two before being found. I don't even care so much about ever getting another FTF. I really wanted the first one, just to say I did it, but beyond that first one, it's not such a big deal.
  22. But at that point the only thing 'special' about it is the cache page. New container, essentially new owner(s), proabably a slightly new hide style. Not enough left to be that special cache everybody remembers. Let it go..... And if that cache page has many years of interesting logs and maybe a few photos, it's worth keeping alive. I decided to replace a container near me. The cache owner hasn't signed on the site in years. The swag and log were OK thanks to plastic bags, but the container was cracked. All it needed to be viable again was a new container. Because of the bags it would probably have to linger somewhat longer before it justified archiving. If I were to re-hide, I would have picked the exact same spot. No one is going to convince me I made the wrong choice in deciding to replace the container.
