  1. Just wanted to say thanks for the tremendous response and advice from everyone, including the links. Wer'e definitely liking the Canon (just watching for a sale, now). Our regular camera is a Canon and it's proven itself very worthy. In addition to caching photos, it'll be fun to share pics of the kids online with friends. ~katydid
  2. I have thought about this same issue...whether or not MS and I should have separate accounts. We do go caching separately at times, especially when he goes at the crack of dawn, or pre-dawn but most often we go together. That is the key, I believe..."most often." Which way will you cache most often? If you think you will be together more often than not, than it IS easier to maintain one account (less logging). If you each want your own identity, then go separate. In our case, a single account does inflate the number slightly (as opposed to what each of us would have individually) so technically it would be "fairer" to have separate accounts, but it is, afterall, only a game. Also, consider if you will be hiding caches together... again, it is easier to manage one account. ~katydid
  3. Hopefully the caches we’ve placed will (or have) spawn an interest in the area. As our caches eventually fade away with the passage of time, my hope is that this “interest” propagates new generations of caches and cachers. Our caches were never intended to be our memorials. MS
  4. Don't lose sight of your job - it pays the bills. As always, enjoy the adventure! MS
  5. So true Mopar, words on the screen are so often misinterpretted. Looking forward to this cache, birdsong. Perhaps you can include coords to the huge Jesus statue on the cache page for those that want to check it out. I, for one, would like to see that.
  6. Miles Stone recently had 4 in one day. I wasn't along because I wouldn't get up at the unGodly hour he will. ~ Katydid
  7. Mopar, I don't see it as Birdsong trying to ram God down people's throats. Quite the opposite, she was concerned that it might appear as if she were trying to do just that. Birdsong, this sounds like a great place. Is there a way to set up the cache so that the religious statues are not included in the puzzle? In other words, just use different parts of the woods for different legs if you want to make it a multi, but not the statues. I realize that you want to take people to certain areas, but if you can work around people having to view the statues, or anything religious, I think that would be best, IMHO. I do think most people would want to explore the area further even though not required for the cache. Simply because it sounds beautiful. Katydid
  8. Two Bear Cubs, that's too funny...and I can relate! Team Snoopy, we have left those spongebob packs too! I think they're great because they're sealed. We have also noticed that they have been traded for soon after we left them, a time or two. I don't see a problem with band aids as long as they are clean and dry obviously.
  9. If the cache is full of good stuff, you could exchange small for large and then place the larger items in another deserving cache. If you know the cache is likely never to be visited by youger geocachers (i.e. a very rigorous hike), you could move some of the toys to an appropriate cache. MS
  10. Don't start with the more difficult ones. Getting a DNF (did not find) at the start is a bummer. Trade up wheneve possible, bring spare batteries and start out with a full tank of gas. And above all, enjoy the adventure! MS
  11. We have a couple of boys ages 9 and 10 1/2 who would just love finding those!
  12. As long as there is a clear description in the posting, I think it is OK. My preference would be for it to be on the outside so I don’t disrupt anyone. I’d hate to interrupt an “I do” with a “Where’s the cache?”. MS
  13. Something that will make my granddaughter smile when she opens the treasure. MS
  14. What I thought was a new hair brush. My daughter informed that it wasn't after I gave it to her.
  15. No matter how much you plan and how well you execute your first (or second or ....) it just won't be perfect. I haven't found (or didn't find) a cache I didn't appreciate in some fashion. As long as you don't send me to a crime-infested or otherwise unhealthy area, I appreciate the effort. Don't get so hung up on making the perfect cache that you just don't place one. Sometimes I appreciate puzzles, sometimes an enjoyable walk, sometimes just getting out of the house. A very diverse range of people geocache and no cache will please all. What I do appreciate is a good cache description and a fairly accurate rating on the terrain & difficulty rating - this helps me make the best choices. Enjoy the adventure! MS
  16. When I think of the number of times I've droped my GPS, I'd hate to think what I could do to an expensive camera while jumping across a creek. Durability and compactness are most important for our application. Katydid and I probably need more of a "starter" - highest picture quality is not the most important factor at this time. Thanks for all of your good input!
  17. Thanksgiving sales are soon upon us and we are looking to buy a camera. We'd like to download photos from some of our adventures and share them with fellow cachers. Please give us your thoughts to help us make the best choice.
  18. Some of this humor is rather lame and a spin on fishing or hunting humor. Please add your humor to the list - let's keep the jokes clean please. As always, enjoy the adventure! Too Cold to Geocache Saturday morning a geocacher gets up early, dresses quietly, gets his lunch made, puts on his long Johns, grabs the GPS and goes to the garage to warm up his car and head down to find a new cache posting. He backs his car out of the garage and discovers the rain is really pouring down. It is a torrential downpour. There is also some snow mixed in with the rain, and the wind is blowing 50 MPH. He comes back into the house and turns the TV to the weather channel. He finds it's going to be bad weather all day long; so minutes later, he puts his car in the garage, quietly undresses and slips back into bed. There he cuddles up to his wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispers, "The weather out there is really terrible." To which she sleepily replies, "Can you believe my stupid husband is out geocaching in that!”? New to Geocaching Bob and Sue were new to Geocaching. They did their homework and found a number of caches along the Metacomet Trail. The decided to take a long weekend vacation and find some of these caches. Making sure they were well prepared, they spent a small fortune on all sorts of equipment - maps, GPSs, backpacks, hiking boots, sleeping bags, etc. They rented a 4x4 jeep in the event they had to take some rough roads. They even took a class on how to use their GPS. The first day they were quite frustrated when they didn’t find anything. The same thing happened on the second day, and on the third day. It went on like this until finally, on the last day of their vacation, Bob finds a cache. As they drove home they're really depressed. Sue turned to Bob and said, "Do you realize finding this one lousy cache cost us fifteen hundred dollars?" Bob replied, "Wow! It's a good thing we didn't find any more!" A Geocacher’s Tale Two fellas are looking for a cache under a bridge. One looks up and sees a funeral procession starting across the bridge. He takes off his cap, and bows his head. The procession crosses the bridge and the man puts on his cap, picks up his GPS and continues looking for the cache. The other guy says, "That was touching. I didn't know you had it in you." The first guy responds, "Well, I guess it was the thing to do - after all, I was married to her for 30 years." Cachers Crossing a River One day three cachers were heading towards a new cache and came upon a raging, violent river. They all commented as to how well the owner had laid out the cache to make it extremely challenging. Obviously, they needed to get to the other side, but were perplexed how to best accomplish this. The first man prayed to God, "God, give me the strength to cross this river." Magically, his arm and leg muscles swelled with incredible strength. He was able to swim across the river in about an hour. Seeing this, the second man prayed to God, "God, give me the strength and ability to cross this river." Miraculously, a kayak appeared and he was able to row across the river in about the same amount of time. The third man was amazed how this worked out for the other two, so he also prayed to God, "God, give me the strength, ability and intelligence to cross this river." The man suddenly turned into a woman. She looked at the map and walked across the bridge.
  19. A locker in Grand Central sounds awesome. I love that idea. Perfect for those passing through. Don't know about the logistics though. Oooh and an ammo box in grand central would definitely be cause to call in the bomb squad.
  20. As you know, Katydid was one of the initial FNTFs. I know she had a blast looking for it especially since she met other cachers on the trail; it had me doing searches for alternate meanings or possible symbology associated with "penny". Some like a challenge and some like an easy find at times. If in doubt, I will rate a cache on the hard side - anyone going after a 4 or 5 expects some unique twists and will plan thier time accordingly. It is more frustrating for me if it is rated a 1 or 2 and should be a 4 or 5. Most will give feedback if they believe the rating is to hard. I personally am most grateful to all cachers taking time out to place caches to help guide me to all of those special places out there. It is usually those new to the sport that bring many revolutionary insights to cache hiding. In general, I believe most cachers feel the same way. Revenge is sweet - we'll see what you say after you get to our neck of the woods and attempt our cache Shades of the Rainbow.... As always, enjoy the adventure - we will find your cache and look forward to your next! Miles Stone
  21. I consider it a sport of sorts - a lifestyle for sure. I'm looking forward to a caching-reality TV show we can all be in.... Enjoy the adventure!
  22. We are currently in possession of Cindy the Cinderblock, another unique bug, and we recently brought her to an event where people logged her in and out and signed their names on her as well. If the owner doesn't mind, then I don't see a problem with it. The owner of "Cindy" posted a note in her log that he didn't mind this practice, after someone else objected to it. I think the people at the event would appreciate seeing the CKS, it's different.
