  1. Since web-based Google maps have a new cost problem, why not improve integration with Google Earth. Remove the error, improve the icons, add features, etc.
  2. I agree. I have noticed this as well. It would be helpful to help a user navigate to a specific thing (item), like a physical hidden element. I've implemented a few very tiny locations/zones to try and work around the missing functionality, but some users are confused by these tiny zones and spend time trying to get inside to trigger something, when really they should be looking for a physical element/item.
  3. yes I agree, I think too, that this is only a problem from urwigo and/or triggering the sound device at the computer. sound output on the gps device, garmin or iphone or whatever nearly always works. if not, there may be other reasons. sometimes, but rare i have a crash in the simulator too when a sound should start, when i enter a zone. if i check these cartridge outside with the oregon, i never have had any problems with onEnter/sound good feedback. I'll try playing through the emulator very slowly, and then test also with real devices.
  4. well I spoke too soon. I'm still having the same problem; Urwigo is crashing during playback in the emluator. Now I have two sets of audio files, one with WAVs and the other set has FDL resources. I'm using the player environment to determine which to play. It plays much farther in but still crashes. Any ideas where to start debugging?
  5. I think I fixed it. Having multiple resources for a audio media (one WAV and one FDL) seems to break the emulator at least. I removed the FDLs leaving only the WAVs and the problem went away. I'll have to use if-else logic to determine which to play based on the environment variable.
  6. I have a cartridge that worked reliably. I recently added sounds to it using the Play Sound command onEntering a zone. It works, but after entering and exiting the zone on the emulator a number of times (like 5-10ish), the sounds stop playing and Urwigo crashes. I'm using a single audio file with two resources, one wav and one fdl. This never happened before adding the Play Sound commands. The sound files are small, less than a 1.5 seconds in length. What next? Is this a know issue? Is there a fix? (screenshot attached)
  7. Great. This is what I needed. I got both approaches to work. Thank you very much.
  8. I'd like to have a simple beep when entering a zone. I've search and found threads on fdls and wavs and Jeremy's beep application, BUT I'm wishing one of you experts can sum it up for me. Is there a way to play a beep, that will work on all devices, or at least not crash any specific device? I don't need music, just a beep. Maybe someone can post a sample cartridge with one zone that beeps. ?? Thanks.
  9. I'd make it white (not transparent), but with the maze drawn on the white. This allows you to see the maze, but not where the container is in the maze at any given time.
  10. I published a cart, and some people completed it. I made some small improvements based on feedback, and uploaded the new version (GWC). Will the unlock codes from the original version still unlock the Wherigo?
  11. If an item lies in a zone, only the notice "you see" appears, but not the distance and direction, this is only possible with a zone. This doesn't depend on the device. I will try some of the work-arounds suggested. Thank you. However, on my Garmin Oregon, items in a zone with absolute positions definitely do show the distance and direction to that item. The emulator does this as well, but not the iPhone.
  12. Is this a known behavior/limitation with the iPhone app? I could do it as a zone, but I would rather it show up as an item in the "You See" menu than as a Location in the Locations menu.
  13. I'm using the "Wherigo" app for the iphone. The cart. was built using the Urwigo builder. Are there more than one app for the iPhone?
  14. On the iPhone, I'm not able to see the direction and distance to an item. The item is in a location, and has specific coordinates. The item shows up in the "You See" menu when the player is in the zone, but no compass or distance indicator. In the simulator and on a Garmin Oregon this appears to work as expected. I'm trying to lead the player to an exact location where a real physical container is located inside a larger zone/area. Suggestions? Is this to be expected? Is there a workaround?
  15. Perfect. That is what I needed to know. Thank you!
  16. Greetings. If there is a long thread on this, I apologize. I didn't see one searching. Once I have a cartridge, what do I need to do to post it. If I upload the cartridge to Wherigo.com, is it immediately public. How does this mesh with publishing a cache on geocaching.com? How do I test the unlock logic on Wherigo.com before publishing the cache for everyone? Can someone give me a step-by-step? thanks!
  17. Is there one builder (Wherigo, urwigo, earwigo) that is best? Is there a winner or one which is best in a particular area? Sorry for re-posting, I'm sure this is a common topic, but I am having trouble with search.
  18. I'm disappointed they turned off the user voice ideation site. I understand that it must be frustrating for them to manage expectation, but at least there was a way to gauge what the community was wanting, even if they don't have the resources to respond quickly. I don't think the forums will provide a "better" mechanism for getting feedback from the community, like their release suggested. In my opinion, the fact that they were willing to take input from geocachers was one of the best and most unique aspects of this community. Conspiracy theories: 1) They are trying to squelch negative feedback like that which mostly killed challenges. 2) They're user voice license expired and they're trying to save money. : ) 3) others?? Probably they just don't have resources to manage it. I'm loyal to geocaching, but this is a disappointment. Next time there is another challenge-esque issue, I wonder if cachers will just leave, rather than responding with feedback.
  19. I haven't read the entire thread but overall I agree with most of the assessments. Challenges could have been cool, if they were a new cache type, rather than a new online game entirely. I definitely complained after the launch, but also made an honest attempt to provide feedback in the suggestion system to make them better. Many of my suggestions and other's suggestions that I supported were simply closed because 'Challenges were designed that way' (not verbatim quote). Which is silly, because I wouldn't be making the suggestion if they were designed that way. Here is my list of how to fix challenges: 1) Ownership: logs should be moderated by the creator/owner. Armchair logging, and IMO logging having completed it in the past don't count and the owner should be able to delete the logs. - http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2172395-give-challenge-creators-credit-and-control-over-th 2) Review: Peer review is fine, but it takes time. If a challenge is archived due to review failure, then the completions prior to that decision have to be cleaned up. I have a few completions to my name for early challenges which didn't meet the requirements. Better yet, maybe the Challenge isn't completable until enough users sign off on it meeting the basic requirements. - CLOSED (not changed): http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2171401-challenges-need-to-be-reviewed- - CLOSED (not changed): http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2172981-flagging-challenges-should-allow-for-a-reason-and 3) Notification: Owners and subscribers need notification emails. - http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2173095-challenge-notifications-and-watchlist 4) Terrain and Difficulty should apply. - http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2308539-challenge-should-have-terrain-and-difficulty 5) Other Integration: Challenges should show on Maps, PQs, Search (not a separate search), Users finds pages. - PARTIAL: http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2172073-display-challenges-on-map 6) Virtual Replacement: A more formal way for an owner to propose challenge questions as proof that the Challenge was completed, to be verified by the owner. - http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/2308517-challenges-workflow-for-responding-to-challenge-qu 7) Definition: In order to be an interesting activity, I think there needs to be better definition of what a Challenge is, and what it is not. Taking a picture somewhere and posting it on the internet is not an interesting activity for me (may be for others). I can do that on 100 different sites. I'm not likely to come to geocaching.com to get suggestions on where I should take a picture, regardless of how nice the view/sunset may be. Taking a picture can be the proof that I completed a more intricate challenge in a location, but taking the picture itself should not be the challenge entirely. Ironically, if all the above had been done initially, the grouping of completed Challenges in with the total find count may not have engendered such a backlash.
  20. Chirps no longer require a Garmin. You can interact with Chirps via your iphone now as well. You do not have to buy a Garmin. http://www.torontogeocaching.com/2011/08/09/geobeacon-garmin-chirp-on-an-iphone-or-ipad/
  21. Good question. It is probably a good idea to preemptively change them, but I'm also curious how long they could last. I hate to wait until a DNF to find out.
  22. This is not true. The poster doesn't claim to have any Chirp caches; I have three and all are now working more than a year on the original battery, as promised. I suppose this is possible, but not likely if you post coordinates for the Chirp like Garmin/Geocaching suggest. You would go to those coordinates and wait, not walk by. I have had many logs that indicate they are working just as expected; even for first time Chirp-finders. Sorry for the rebuttal post, but I admit that I get a little fussy when I see posts that are inaccurate or not logical.
  23. It is true this can happen, but I personally have had good luck with tacks. They will have to be replaced from time to time; I just carry a few with me when I do maintenance, but overall they don't seem to quickly rust out. Even with nails you will have to do maintenance. I think you will find that carrying replacement nails and tape and a hammer is a larger effort than replacement tacks. One tip to a good night cache is to set it up in an area you can get to frequently to check on it, and maintain it well. Make sure that if you lose a reflector, all is not lost.
