  1. quote:It is a good idea to avoid wrapping your cache up in a polythene bag. Critters will chew it and once the hole is large enough, poke their head in and possibly get trapped. Carrier bags could be a problem for larger critters if they get the handle wrapped around their neck. Is this anecdotal, or has anybody actually found a cache with a dead animal attached? I'm a little concerned, because the majority of caches in our part of the world seem to have a plastic bag layer
  2. quote:Originally posted by Pharisee:The deciding factor was the nothing to do with geocaching. The speedo on my ol' Honda has fallen apart and a new one is astronomically expensive Blimey... I'd like to see you get THAT through an MOT
  3. quote:Team Tommy wants to place lots of caches in our area but are a bit apprehensive about getting it wrong. Can you give me some guidelines. I think the main problem is that some newcomers start placing caches way too early - for example, at the weekend, I spotted a name I didn't recognise on a new cache, and checked out the cacher's stats - "found:2 hid:5". It's a case of common sense really - can somebody with so little experience of the game *really* appreciate what constitutes a "good" cache placement? Or are they just littering the country with sub-standard caches, and cheapening the geocaching experience for all who follow? When we started caching, one of the "old hands" gave us 2 useful bits of advice about cache placement - get a dozen finds under your belt before you place your first cache... and if you live somewhere which already has a high density of caches, concentrate on quality rather than quantity. For most people who cache, the location, journey, and experience are just as important as getting their hands on the tupperware box at the end of the hunt. There's nothing worse than finding a box shoved in a boring location, or hidden in such an obvious manner that you *know* it'll go missing within a month (along with the logbook and whatever goodies you decide to leave...) That said, you guys seem to be going about things the right way! :-) John TGS.

  6. Nice site... but beware the wrath of Groundspeak for (mis)use of their logo!
  7. ..or TNLS (Take nothing, leave something).
  8. Glad it worked - it'll be good to see another Northern cacher on the circuit
  9. quote:Originally posted by Warwick Bear:As a new comer to Geocacheing , is this what it is all about? Not too sure I have understood the obective, if so I am off! Hi Warwick Bear, welcome to geocaching. If you're interested in finding your first cache (I note you haven't found any yet, a bit like our mysterious "?" friend), then there's plenty of people hereabouts that will be happy to help + answer your questions. Post away!
  10. Go to the very top of the main page, and click the "logout" link. Then you should be able to set up a new account. You'll need to repeat the logout process when you want to sign in as the Northumbrian again.

  12. quote:Originally posted by ?: Sound good to me - what's a sock puppet? :-) Also am I missing something here on the profiles or does everyone tell you who they are and where they live - just curious??? It's just as well you're not a full-time troll, if this is the best you can manage Not biting. Sorry.
  13. quote:Originally posted by ?:Am I a troll? The Northumbrian and Good Shepherds think I am (Team Galaxy are newbies so can be forgiven). Technically, you're more of a sock puppet than a troll, but the "troll booth" gag in the other thread was way too good an opportunity to miss :-) I certainly wouldn't class myself as having been "offended", and I'd be surprised if anybody else felt so strongly. However, people are bound to be slightly suspicious of anybody with a 0/0 profile who posts so prolifically (and, often, contentiously) - what exactly are their motives in doing so? - why do they have something to hide? - are they somebody who has previously been "exiled" from the forum? - you can hardly be surprised that so many of your postings prompt skeptical and cautious responses. Nevertheless, my vote is: "couldn't give a #@$%" John TGS.

  15. Would you pay your congestion charge at the nearest troll booth? Joking aside, maybe it would be a good idea to run some kind of incentive to get caches into under populated areas. What about a new stat on the UK:G site - "top 10 caches placed the furthest distance from any previously existing cache" ...maybe run it as some kind of challenge?
  16. quote:Originally posted by Travers:There's a snake game? Ahhh, I can see why you could be tempted! If there was a built-in yo-yo feature, *then* you'd be talking
  17. (and another one. it wasn't even that funny the first time.)
  18. quote:what's a pillock? Sombody who is gormless. Don't you lot speak english?
  19. Blimey.. if you've ever felt a bit self-concious when an unexpected muggle spotted you wandering through the undergrowth intently staring at your GPS, wait until you see the trendy new garmin machines... They have built in games - stuff along the lines of the nokia snake game, and a "virtual" maze game - where you actually need to wander about in the real world to control the on-screen action. Now if *that* doesn't make you look like a total pillock to the average passer-by, then nothing will! ...bizarre!!! details here On a more positive note, the store price for the entry level "geko" seems to be around the 80 quid mark (inc VAT) ...could make it an attractive proposition for would-be cachers
  20. quote: PS , look at that they have already taken off my Charter membership, yet I am still payed up until 17 march Exactly the same thing happened to me at the start of the year when my CC expired at paypal - I was left in a situation where paypal reckoned I was still subscribed, but Groundspeak didn't. It took a few e-mails to Groundspeak + two attempts by Jeremy to sort things out (the first time he fixed it I reverted back to "non-charter" member again after a few days!) Send details of your problem to contact@groundpeak.com - unfortunately you get put into a queue, and given a virtual "ticket"... it can be a few days before you get to the front of the queue - but I found Groundspeak to be extremely helpful once it got around to being my turn (and happily refunded me for the "lost" credit!)
  21. quote:However to those in the north i.e The Good Shepherds I suppose it could be midlands. Actually, many people reckon that the geographical centre of the UK is a place called Haltwhistle, which is actually just a tad north of where we live (and not far from the Scottish border). So maybe we're midlanders too
  22. (deleted. Another double post. This board hates me)
  23. For the benefit of those who rarely poke their noses out of the safety of the UK forum (like me!) I thought the following information might be of interest... Apparently, "locationless caches" are soon to be taken out of the main geocaching section of the site - they're getting re-classified as a seperate game (a bit like benchmarking already is). This is part of a major shake-up of the current site design, due in a month or two. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that there'll be a knock-on effect on people's "found" totals. Any recent entrants to the "100 club" might want to make sure they've racked up a sufficient amount of traditional/virtual caches to rely on before the cull!
  24. Cleethorpes? Isn't that somewhere in the midlands?
