  1. I love how both you acted like I said NOBODY or EVERYONE...I said those are the types that tend to buy these units anymore. Geocaching is fun and all, but personally I have only come across 2 other families that have ever heard of it. So sure there are some people that buy for just geocaching as well, but again this is a minority of the general population. See the difference? I would use my Colorado if I was really going off the beaten path for sure, but there are times when you would have your phone and not your handheld is the point, so having these apps would be great. Note I said nothing about NOT buying these units or the new Monterra, I simply said the apps would be a huge benefit.
  2. I know you said you wanted vanilla, but you can get the Dakota and the Oregon for under $200 these days.
  3. I just hope this means there will be a full Garmin app for Android...If it is even close to having a current version of Android on it, it will be possible to get the app off of there. But if they wait just a bit and put a full Offline Garmin mapping app and the topo....that would be sweet. It would cut into their hardware profit, but would probably sell WAY more since everyone has a phone and only hikers and hunters really buy a stand alone handheld unit anymore. My Colorado still kicks butt, but I would love to have all those same functions on my S3
  4. Ya but these are not 3rd party maps, they are Garmin 24k Topo maps...If I open up BC I can use any of my installed maps on my computer, I have CN, topo 2008, 24k all as a choice to view, but again I cant see the maps on the GPS from the computer is my issue. I guess at this point I will just give up and delete what I have and just create a new mapset and send to the SD card to make sure I have the sections I need for an upcomming vacation. I just didnt think it should be this hard to simply view a mapset I have saved on the GPS.
  5. Ya then something is not working correctly, Its only showing the CN 2013 on the GPS, but like I said, these maps work fine on the GPS so they cant be messed up or wrong. No idea why its not showing them.
  6. OK so I have a Colorado 300, I have a SD card in it with CN , topo 2008 and 24k South Central. Im not sure if I put the whole 24k SC on there or not. How can I open it up to see what exactly is there from my computer? I tried to just open it from Basecamp, File, Open, find img file...but after a LONG time of opening it up, it fails and says its not a valid map file. Works fine on the GPS. So Am I trying to open it up wrong or is there a way to open this up so I can see the whole section of map I have in this img file?
  7. Sounds like you might have 2 gmapsupp.img files. Have you added or copied a map to the gps before?, that is the default name it gives. Honestly there pretty much isnt much else it can be if 2 maps are not working. Either move the other map off the unit or rename it and see if you can then see the SD card map. Also try to disable all other maps but the 24k, sometimes certain maps will override others.
  8. If you are referring to straight up geocaching , trail use that actually goes into the wilderness, then its a resounding YES. There is no doubt about it. But if you like to be able to stay on paved paths and be able to just pull up new caches on the fly, the iphone works fine. But for real GPS applications, that is what a GPS handheld is for, the phones its a very small added extra to the many functions it has, so its not suppose to be as accurate and durable. So I dont think you need to get all uptight if you want to use your phone and you think your not missing anything by doing this, you may not. But if you leave the pavement and get to the wilderness and want to really track your movement and still have really good accuracy, save waypoints, etc then a dedicated GPS is the answer. I have used my iphone at times and have it work fine, then other times with more tree cover and it was worthless, was off by at least 50+yrds. The battery will not last, if you really do a day of caching around the city, leaving the phone on using maps to get there etc. It will not last 2-4hrs tops, sure you can charge in the car, who wouldnt, but you have to or it will not make it. Most GPSs will last 14hrs give or take. So again, there is nothing wrong with use a new smart phone for doing these activities at all, its part of their utility for sure. But to ask if a dedicated GPS is better for GPS "stuff" , the answer is plain to see.
  9. Just know the 24k will not be the entire US, unless you get all versions of the software, and this will cost you several times as much, several hundred dollars. Where CN is a one time purchase for under $100 I would love to have the 24k, but just one section(Like South Central about 4 states worth) is over a hundred bucks.
  10. The 210 was my first GPS, at the time it was better than most Garmins on accuracy, then the Hcx series came out and they were pretty closely matched at that point. The 210 does NOT have a SD slot so you can only fit so much map detail and geocaches at a time. But its doable. Like others have said, google that unit and you will find info and be on your way. If you find you really do like geocaching, then you can think about updating to a paperless unit and go from there. But you have this one, might as well give it a go, again mine worked just fine until it finally died on me and I got a Garmin Colorado that I still use to this day.
  11. This is not true in every instance for a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Actual hands-on observations: 1. I took the subject phone out to my backyard this AM, turned on the GPS function and the Maps app, and had the current position indicator correctly showing my location within 10 seconds of the terminal screen tap. 2. I repeated the above 1 mile sway and 1 hour later and the current position was locating me instantaneously. So, the slowness quoted above may be attributed to the effects of the ephemeral data as applicable to the GPS constellation. As such, the slowness is applicable to all GPSRs, as opposed to specific makes and models. For example, two months from now I expect to be 120 miles from my home. If I do not use the GPS function on my Skyrocket between now and then, I fully expect that it will take substantially longer to show my location correctly on the screen. This just means they might have already changed the gps in the newer phones, again this is not an opinion or myth...the Samsungs before the newest ones had issues with the gps, google it , talk to somebody that has/had one and you will see what the OP was referring to. It was not a case of the usual "its been a while" or "Im now in another state" issue, the gps was poorly designed in the prior samsung models. Samsung and AT&T even finally said they were putting out an update to fix it, but it did not work... But Im glad to hear that maybe now they have this resolved as I think they have the best all around phones these days.
  12. Samsung for some odd reason has always had very weak GPS for some reason, so you heard right...my kid has a captivate, the first galaxy...and its very slow, it takes a good 10min or more to get sat lock and loses it easy, this is not a myth, I can only assume they are still using the same GPS and the issue still remains. I have liked Samsungs for a while now, but this is about the only issue I know of they constantly have. I was 95% on the path to get the Skyrocket, but have now decided to hold out till spring when the quad cores roll out to jump on upgrading my iPhone 3gs...Im hoping they come around to using another GPS by then, but not holding my breath.
  13. My first guess is your SD card or the maps you have on it...I have a colorado and a certain card I have is like this , it will hang up when booting. Normally after the first funky time its fine, but I dont use the card anymore and have not seen the issue again. Card works fine with everything else... So try to put the file on the unit itself with no card in and see what it does. Otherwise I have no clue, but I can say there is pretty much no way its just a garmin thing for all those different units, has to be something else.
  14. Really? That's interesting. Where I live, you can either get a phone with a subscription including an internet data plan and free text messages etc, or you can simply buy the phone and refill whenever you need to. Which is better, financially speaking, if you don't use it a lot. You will be purchasing for full price then, You can NOT get any smart phone, Windows,IOS, Android, Blackberry without a data plan. At least not for the lower price or free, Now if you want to buy a $400 phone and do this you can, but not many will spend that for a phone your only using half the features for. But for the original question, yes you can use it without data, but not quite as easy as with as you cant update while in the field and the like.
  15. Other than folks in the UK, nobody has the S2 yet so you wont know this for about another month Id say. Im keeping an eye on this model as well and have pretty high hopes for it. And I have never understood the whole most units will not get you right on the cache, I CAN count how many times my unit was not right on top and I mean within 1-3 feet 90% of the time. Id say about 3-5 times ever did it just flake out and seem the cache was 100yrds off, next day try that same cache and take me right to it. Not sure what happens on those days, I blame sunspots, heh.
  16. I'm quite sure 10 seconds with Google and anyone can figure out how to get the maps... As long as it is a T model, the OP is legal and that is his problem. You wont find the actual T maps that all fit in one nice file out there, sure you can find the topo and select as much as you can but not the custom garmin file for T models, at least not that I have ever seen. What happened is when you put the CN maps, it took the name Gmapprom and overwrote the map that was there, or you have that name on the SD card CN map and need to swap it to gmapsupp. This is about the only thing that could be wrong to be honest. You cant have 2 maps even if one is on the unit and one on the card with that same name.
  17. And to make sure you know, this is for any Garmin not just the Colorado...
  18. I dont see how this can possibly go down , the police and fire departments use GPS to get to locations alone will be enough to ensure this wont disrupt service, so either this isnt as big a deal as it sounds, or it wont happen. There is no chance they will let anything mess with emergency services.
  19. I hope that this is a step on the way to fixing their own Android app v2.01 Ya. Navigon for the iPhone is really good. If all they do is improve the phone apps it will be worth it. Navigon is my go to nav for iphone, I sure hope they keep that going and not go the route they went on Garmin Nav for iphone, I have no idea why Garmin thought not having the maps loaded on the unit was a good idea. I will not use any that dont have the maps on board. Hope your listening Garmin, you have a chance to totally take over another market if you do it right.
  20. On my Colorado 300 some cards will not work, not sure what the issue is, but some will just hang on boot on the gps. I have no clue why but I can put a 8g just fine, where another will not work. I did find a 8g Sandisk that did work so thats what I use now. I have put CN, half the US topo 100k,some 24k, and some birdseye and it works like a champ. I have not tried bigger than 8g
  21. Did she load those maps on her PC in MapSource or Basecamp ? If so, it should be a simple matter to re-load them back onto the 400t. If it is registered in MYGARMIN, I wonder why garmin would not just supply a link to D/L the map or send her a DVD with the maps on it rather than making her send the unit back to them. They dont want their secret voodoo map getting out is why. They use their magic to get the entire US in one file for those T maps, This is why if you load the 100k or 24k maps you cant get the entire US on there, its too big. You will end up having to send the unit in unless you are pretty technical and willing to venture to some shady websites is the bottom line.
  22. I would agree with this and I wouldn't want to go back to a Patch Ant.....whats with that, why not Quad Helix. We've been enjoying the 450....looking forward to testing the new software download. You do realize the 450 is a patch and not quad helix. Only the 60, 62 and Colorado use the quad helix. They are going to have to come way down on the MSR before I would even consider it.
  23. I have a Colorado 300 and I will not "upgrade" until it dies....I think they got a bad rap from such a rough start, and it was rough...but now you wont find many that dont like their Colorado. Im hoping by the time mine dies they will have moved on to the next level as Im just not a big fan of the Oregon, and the new 62s are just not as robust as the 60csx they are pretty much suppose to replace. So heres to hoping they create a Colorado II....
  24. You will only get on the road if you use the City Nav maps really, all the base and topos are just not geared for that and will normally not match up.
  25. The only bad thing is its over the wire , as in the maps are NOT on your ipad, so no cell coverage,no maps. Bad move on Garmins part, if they end up putting the maps on the unit in a later version, it will be the best nav for iphone/ipad
