  1. Is there a category out there for Makerspaces, AKA Hackerspaces? It should be called "Makerspaces" since that's a common term without the hacker connotation. This JUST occurred to me after reviewing a library that was advertising a Maker class on their website, which made me remember that the libraries in my area had talked about Maker classes recently. I searched for Makerspace on Waymarking.com category search (as well as Maker, hacker, and hackerspace) and didn't get a solid hit. So I searched the forums and, of course, found the references there to the recent Maker stuff related to gadget caches and/or 3d printing. Then I looked up makerspace on wikipedia. They have them under hackerspace, but they seem to be pretty global. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackerspace I haven't created a category in a while--any interest in this one?
  2. Down again: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.
  3. My Sister in Law and her family just messaged me a picture of themselves at the Eiffel Tower replica in Paris, TN. As is my habit, I was going to send her the waymark. I put Eiffel Paris, TN Waymarking in Google and Google returned http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMP6E, a decent looking waymark in the Exact Replicas category with 11 visits ranging from 6/15/1999 to 5/28/2014. But it's archived. And there's no replacement waymark. Other than asking the poster, is there any way we can tell WHY it was archived? I'm asking the poster now, btw.
  4. I got photos and coords for a time capsule in January when it was scheduled to be opened in April. I didn't get it posted until May, and I found a newspaper article about it being opened. I explained all that to the category managers and they approved it. I haven't logged a visit yet. Holding off until I can visit AGAIN and see the contents!
  5. I was able to login without incident today, Tuesday, using Chrome.
  6. Found another link with more photos: Forgotten Giant Arrows That Guide You Across America
  7. It's a geocoin, meaning that it is trackable over on the geocaching.com site. Why would it be trackable? Think of it like Flat Stanley. You "release" the coin by placing it into. Geocache, and logging that on the Colin's page. Another geocacher picks it up, and drops it into another cache. So it travels around. But the reasons that you mention are valid as well. In fact, I just ordered one of the coins, and I intend to just keep it, as I've had rotten luck with my trackables going missing pretty quickly. I have a small collection of coins that have never been released. More info:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocoin
  8. I'd suggest pulling the waypoints out with a piece of software, such as Garmin Basecamp, and then you can copy and paste coordinates, eliminating any chance of typos. Of course it would be nicer if one could just import the waypoint directly to the Waymarking website, but you can't do that yet.
  9. Just saw this forum thread. Just downloaded the app. Thanks Vince! --QuesterMark
  10. My opinion: The waymark posting itself should contain nothing but facts that will generally stand the test of time. Anything that refers to when the waymarker visited should go in a visit log. For example, a Texas Historical Markers waymark should contain the text of the the marker, perhaps the location of the marker in words as opposed to coordinates (the coordinates too of course), maybe which way the marker faces or how the marker is mounted. Any discussion of what time of day or the weather or who else was around should be part of a VISIT.
  11. I just approved a WM that used tinyurls for the link fields. Are tinyurls permanent? What about other shorteners? Should I NOT approve waymarks with shortened URLs?
  12. Saw this on The Chive. Apparently there's a webcam at Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland. http://www.eileandonancastle.com/eilean-donan-webcam.htm A soldier's wife and kids went there as tourists and he happened to catch them on the webcam. Here's the story: Soldier gets an unlikely but welcome Webcam surprise (8 Photos) http://thechive.com/2013/04/16/soldier-gets-an-unlikely-but-welcome-webcam-surprise-8-photos/ (completely SFW, unlike some photo series at The Chive). So I went to check, and someone waymarked the Castle, but the camera's not done! I'd do it myself except the prospects of me getting there to do it are nil.
  13. Just found this. Looks pretty cool! I'll try it out, and see how it works. Meanwhile, as I saw you were considering Facebook "Like" integration, don't forget about Pinterest? Waymarking ends up being a lot about photos, so Pinterest seems like a natural. Just a thought. Thanks for your work!
  14. A waymarker apparently submitted a couple of Texas Historical Markers to the Signs of History category. That category rejected them and suggested the category for each waymark be changed to Texas Historical Markers. So far so good. So they show up in the TxHM cat, and I go to approve them. I noticed when I look at the photos that the links provided under the photo are: Category - Signs of History Waymark - [appropriate waymark name] That first one should be Category - Texas Historical Markers. Here are the specific waymarks: http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMGEVC_JP_Richardson_The_Big_Bopper http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMGETT_Site_of_Colliers_Ferry No rush to fix or anything, just thought folks ought to know. I didn't scour the forums looking to see if this was posted previously. If it was, my apologies for starting another thread.
  15. Groundspeak should read through this and capture some blurbs from the various players about Waymarking and use this text to promote the site.
  16. I haven't been in the forums in a while. Did you have NO comments on your original proposal here in the forums? I need a little more convincing on this category. Your writeup looks really good--but maybe an example would be nice? I've seen fish mounts before, but aren't they in a LOT of seafood restaurants? Would I just waymark the restaurant ONCE, even if there are a LOT of fish mounts in there?
  17. iPhoto does read the EXIF metadata. The entire OS X operating system displays the photos with corrected orientation if that info is in the metadata, unlike Windows. I use iPhoto as part of my process. I export the photos at Maximum quality, medium size as JPG files, and then upload to Waymarking. This behaviour is left over from when the Waymarking site would timeout when uploading large files. Conveniently, if one exports files from iPhoto that have been edited or are of a different size than the original, it seems to correct the orientation.
  18. I was lucky in that my work gave me an iPad and I got to request one with a 3G cell network capability. I have to pay that bill, but that's ok. The iPad enables me to determine my present coordinates (if I happen not to have anything else handy) and then look those coords up on Waymarking.com and see all the posted waymarks in the area. I can gather all the pics and coords that I want to--and tell whether something's been waymarked yet. I think my visits have increased since I got this kind of access on site, since Groundspeak hasn't gotten around to facilitating any other bulk methods.
  19. This app needs my geo credentials (password ?) And I am warned not to do that. What is wise to do? Herengeo That app is mentioned on geocaching.com's API page: http://www.geocaching.com/live/default.aspx I use it and I've never had any problems related to the credentials.
  20. Each Category has a pair of links on the right side of the page: Find Related Topics Post New Forum Topic For the Texas Historical Markers category, these are broken. Are they broken for all categories? Even to reach the read-only archive data? Are they going to be fixed or just removed? I liked them. I used to link other stuff in that was related to the Category, whether it was related to Waymarking or not. Sometimes it might be a news story about a resource for finding items that would fit in the category, or sometimes it might be a story about how some natural disaster affected items that might be in or fit a category...
