  1. Did anyone else notice that the whole stick to the rules to the letter came from the USA? Is there nothing in this world now that is not being hit by the PC crowd? no matches! no food! no Drink! No Batteries! No Maccy dees toys as they may have come in contact with nuts! now theres a point i think us Geo cachers are all slightly nuts. so now everything in a cache has potentially being in contact with nuts! Come join the Liberal front! Use common sense in both Taking and leaving things in caches. if you don't like whats in it don't take it. if your mummy or daddy has told you its bad to drink 5cl of scotch don't drink it. if they told you not to play with fire. don't take the matches or lighter! May advice apart from wear sun screen is just don't leave things that will damage the cache. i.e things that will melt or corrode or attract animals. etc etc
  2. Can i play devils advocate? since everyone has said yes log it. i think i should say no don't log it. if it is now your cache to maintain then why should you log it? Being Devils advocate i take it i am not allowed to say that i would log it myself!
  3. Well this is all very interesting. The only thing i have actually seen to hve broken down in a cache is a bar of soap. the whole cache was damp but had a pleasant smell. Anyway after read what everyone has to say here i am now seriously considering placing my first cache. And from a safety point of few all my trade items in the cache will be "virtual" items. So for a FTF prize i will be placing a virtual 1million pounds. i will also throw in a few virtual sets of car keys and a some blinging watches and diamond ear rings. Now thats is what i call a safe yet generous cache.
  4. Some excellent caches posted so far and a great idea at the teddy bear trees. Keep the replies coming!
  5. I was looking for a cache this morning and started think that i'd love to place a cache in a wide open space and for it not to get muggled. I know of some that if you know what they are they are quite open, but i would like to know is of some of the caches you've found or placed that are really obvious but have never been muggled. Thanks
  6. I was looking at the retail price guide for the different specs. this week and the european one is quite a bit more expensive i'm not sure if anyone would be prepared to stump up the difference. but if you want i can get the prices for you again.
  7. Belfast Zoo ( it's on a big hill and it really takes it out of you unless you take the little train thing up then you miss all the animals) and a little boy took a penguin home when he went on a school trip and showed his mum when he got home.
  8. Well here is my rant! Geo caching seems to be seasonal as come summer the tree coverage is superb making most cache sites like great but how many people suffer from loss of signal when under these trees? After being recommended an etrex legend and having bought 2(long story but if any one is looking one let me know) I like it alot but is there a better one with a better chipset or stronger singnal for a reasonable price? I would appreciate your feedback on this.
  9. Been trying to think of some signature items for myself... this has giving me a couple of ideas! nice one scaw
  10. Just another point of interest. I like to think of cachers as a quite with-it and up to date kind of gadget mad group( of course i might be wrong) But i would like to highlight that a torch or a flash light(yank speak) are a thing of the past what we are using now are illumination tools now how much better does that sound? http://night-ops.com/ and if you want the best try this bad boy out! cache you all later!
  11. I think after reading this and some of the other replies on this post, i am going to place a cache that you need to bring your tool box your climbing gear and your wet gear...then in the cache box i will leave the phone number for the air-sea rescue!
  12. ummm. A bit pricey me thinks if you are looking offers over £80 for a GPSr that can be bought new for just under the ton mark. But i wish you luck in your quest to find a new home! Cache you later!
  13. I have possibly put myself across wrong which i thought might happen. Yes i agree with comments about meeting other cachers and telling other people what you got up too, thats all great part of the sport. What i am trying to put across. Me telling my workmate or the occassional passer by what i'm up to is all good and that chances of the majority of them wanting to take part is small. so maybe out of every 10 people we tell you get 1 to take it up. But getting it on the news and other mass media does not do it for me. I think at least the people who do these TV pieces should have the dignity to disguise their voice and have their faces blacked out ( i must add i'm joking before someone takes me the wrong way) Any way keep the comments coming so far so good!
  14. I read on one of the posts on here about a TV news group looking to do a bit on Geocaching. I was just thinking do we really want or need this kind of publicity for geocaching? I found out about it from a friend and it seemd like a cool underground group to be in. Like when you are out and about searching for caches trying not to be spotted by the public, Gives you a chance to be a kid again. So should we not leave Geocaching to be found by more covert methods other than mainstream publicity? I would really like to hear your views on this. Me personally would rather it be a more underground thing as my biggest fear about it is that i don't want to be out caching some day and being able to easliy find the cache because i am 35th in line to get to sign the log book!
  15. Ok thanks to also those who posted replies to my query on which GPS to buy. Ok say i buy this garmin etrex legend. i can get it around £100 on ebay with UKbasemap included. I can get it from the US for £65 with some kind of US map i assume. Now what i would like to know is..... Does the Uk maps include Northern Ireland in detail or at all? if not i think i am better getting it in the Staes. Cheers Donny
  16. Thank you all for your swift replies. All roads seem to point to Garmin. legend perhaps? i live in northern ireland so do any of these units i.e the legend come with maps with northern ireland on them? i love bells and whistles but also don't like spending money i don't have. As to the N80 comment it is not a windows smarthpone and i thought it was symbian but it won't let me install my power navagation program which is symbian. So any further thoguths on packages which can be used on a N80 would be good too. Remember knowledge is power so please share all your knowledge with me. Donny
  17. Well i have just started dipping my toes into the world of GPS and geocaching and need some advice. Until now i have been using a bluetooth gps reciever along with my nokia 6630. i have tried a couple of different programs but for caching power navigator seems to be useful enough for me. However i have since changed my phone to a nokia n80 and this program does not work on it. So it is making me think its time to change to a proper GPS unit of some description. now here in lies the problem i have not got the slightest clue as what to look for how much to spend new or second hand??? so any advice would be gratefully recieved. Thanks for taking time to read my post. Donny
