  1. Well seems there are different opions about this issue. I for one do not agree to let them just sit there without the owner maintaining them or responding to problems. That is not how the Geocaching Policies read.....I will stop maintaining these caches and I will leave a "needs to be archive" note on each one (this will be the third time on this process!!) Hopefully other cachers will see the issues on these caches and they spend the time looking for it if it is not there or needs maintance. Policies are placed for a reason and need to be followed to support Geocaching in this area. SaidCache
  2. I have be caching for about little over 2 years now, and I have been placing several new caches. I have been told that my area has been know for being a dead spot for caches. I am hopefully bringing some new life to this area with the help from other local cachers. But there is issue with several caches in this area and some outside the area where the owner has not been active for several years now and most of the caches need maintaince. I have notified Geocaching (new local reviewer) about this issue and they have stated that we can not just disable a cache because of the owner is not active or in the area anymore. Other cachers included myself have been maintaining these caches, and not to long ago one cache was finally archived and another cacher replaced in the same spot but they are the owner. This issue needs to be addressed but unknown how, according to Geocaching they do not condon other cachers maintaining caches, only thing that will start the process of archiving the cache needs to MIA or reports from land owners etc that the cache needs to be moved. I am pretty sure the is not the only place this happens but just wanted to direction or thoughts. Saidcache Iowa
  3. I have been caching for 12 years now and I remember when caches where bigger then a 35mm film container. A "old school" cache is where you had a least a .15 walk/hike on a trail, the cache was big enough (ammo can) for alot of swag, and was worth the walk/hike. Now a days (myself included) the urban caches have taken over and it is seems how many we can hide within the (.10 distance away) it used to be .15 away. These micro have no room for swag and they are put out to quickly increase your stats. When did this change happen? When I hide a micro cache and a "old school" cache it is amazing how many more finds the micro gets compared to the "old school" cache. Even the patterns of the cacher have changed. Also I remember when owning a travel bug and releasing it was a big deal, now a days if you relaese one it will become MIA in a few short months. Cachers have changed also, I used to travel several miles to cache that I already found that had a travel bug in it and it was race to get it before anyone else to retrieve. This new option of "discovering" a trackable has taken the fun out travel bugs, cachers get there stats and that famous trackable icon on there profile but they do nothing to help the travel bug in its goal. Geocaching has changed and my thought it is slowly getting away from the foundation that it was created several years ago, dont get me wrong change is good. But where are the Geocaching values that used to be in place? Saidcache Iowa
  4. Hello, Just a note, just installed new beta version, and I am getting a extra window when I export the database to a Mapsource file. Earlier versions after the export was complete I would get a simple small window saying export done and hit the ok button. Now after the export is done it popups a dos window saying export is done and please hit any key to continue. Just wanted to bring this up, might be a little gremlin.... Thanks SaidCache

  6. Well for the first time on national Tv for geocaching.com. Wish it showed how the real sport is being done. Bad things from the show: - State Park (Hope they had permisson) - It was BURIED! - The gave the sport I think a bad rep (that geocachers are killers) - Never used the hand held gps to help crime, she might have used a waypoint to find where the (gun) might be, they could of use it or looked at the unit Good things from the show: - Show the actually website - Got the sport of geocaching to a very big part of population, and people going to look! Last thoughts: I hope some of the brass from geocaching clear some of the things up that we noticed, pretty sure we will hear something in the near future.

  17. SaidGeoTeam was out with Olgezzer on a cache hunt in Stone State Park in NW Iowa on Memorial Day weekend. We were followed into the park by a DNR officer who saw our geocaching window decals and license plate frames. The DNR guy invited himself along on the hunt and took pictures of the cache in its hiding spot. He said that "at this time" there are no state-wide rules for caching. He will be handing over the pics he took to someone higher up in the DNR food chain. He said that the biggest concern right now is whether the increased foot traffic by cachers will harm the natural environment. If he starts to see visible wear along the trails from people (as opposed to deer, etc), he will ask that the cache be re-hidden in a new location. We did point out to him that we believe in "cache in, trash out". I'd like to add that here in NW Iowa, we've had very positive experiences with DNR/Conservation officers, both State and County. Many have said they like the additional visitors to the parks. One of our own caches was found by a County Conservation officer on a clean-up duty. He read the info inside, signed the log book, and re-hid the cache. It seems to me that it's a matter of making sure the correct info gets to the DNR before they hear all the "horror stories" of burried caches just feet away from Indian Burial Grounds, etc (which is of course against the caching rules anyway). And keep in mind that DNR regulations would apply only to State Parks. Each County could set up its own rules on caching in county managed parks. We each need to do what we can to present a good image for cachers. SaidGeoTeam NorthWest Iowa Geocaching Club
  18. Will be setting up a trex soon.... SaidGeoTeam NorthWest Iowa Geocaching Club

  22. SD Public Radio recently aired a short (6min) bit on GeoCaching. "Olgezzer" was followed on a geocache hunt and interviewed for this piece. Jeremy Irish, the GeoCaching founder, also provided a quote. You can hear it here: http://www.sdpb.org/radio/index.htm Then click on "News Features", "April" (for 2003), then on "4.17" You'll need RealOne Player to listen. According to the radio reporter, a version of this same story will air soon on National Public Radio as well. SaidGeoTeam
