  1. As mentioned by bitmapped, I too played with the offline mode and experienced the non text wrapping. I also however noticed that I could not log the cache as found, only write a note, then save for later. Upon submission of found caches, I had to go to each page, and edit my note and change to found. Will be playing with it again later today, and will see if I am overlooking something, but so far, it appears not. EDIT TO ADD: Today I was VERY careful as not to use the offline options. Of the 16 found, only 3 show as "found it" instead of a note.
  2. Everyone wants to have fun themselves, and if in the spirit of keeping it fun for someone else does something that they believe in that someone else doesn't, and the lack of rules persay, since noone likes rules, because then they try to find a way to bend or break them, and it all causses ill will, and this site was designed for people to have fun, it has some job roles that people have to perform voluntarilly to keep all chaos from breaking loose and running rampant, he says, she says, they all say, whois right, whois wrong, someone has to be right and wrong, but there can't be rules, no way to rules, lets add forums for people to vent frusteration on, that way we can see what rules we have to imply or implement later after it all explodes, but its their toy so they should control that aspect, and we can control this aspect........ see where it leads? everyone is supposed to get along with everybody... it just doesn't quite work that way though.
  3. I have read quite a few of Eartha's posts around and think that they are very diplomatic. I personally probably could not do as fine a job. The splitting hairs comment BTW: I can see pleanty of reasoning for both perspectives, I am not trying to push any issues, nor getting huffy about it at all, just trying to clarify "etiquette" and acceptible dos and don'ts in order to be a more acceptible player. The root of it all is my WIFE SHE enjoys the sport as much as I do. I work from home and been slow lately work wise. She'd skin me alive if I were out playing all day without her.... hence my thoughts are on the sport, and I was looking for creative outlets to pass the time. I am sure many can understand that, right? Its all for the love of the game.
  4. We could split hairs all day long, I'm sure. I had read those too, and are good material for both for and against reasons for my original post. I think you may agree that the ambiguity of the rules and game are in need of some additional documentation. I read things on the TOS for the GC.com website about postings and publishings are the property of the poster/publisher--meaning just as you stated: the owner can delete logs and finds. Eartha's "Primer" or "instructions" as a moderator obviously hold good credit to the legitimacy of the information, but lacking the list of do's and don'ts and why's. I have a spare TB tag yet to be activated, and will pay better attention to any TOS I have to abide by for my references for the future, hopefully it will lend some better insight. I DO feel a bit bummed out for loosing a legitimate find, not going to do anything aobut it specifically, but would be more interested in helping the sport along whether it be documentation, information, etc. I will keep on caching along, its great fun when I otherwise lack something else to do.
  5. Quoting elrojo14 in post 37 above: "I don't even like to drop travel bugs off in caches I have already found. When I find a travel bug, I try and take them to new caches to log them in." With so many facets and perspectives of geocaching, its hard to sometimes pick a stand and stick with it. I too had this perspective when I first started out. Since then, I opened up a TB cache hoping to play on the local airport as a feature. In trying to keep with the travel bug to move perspective, not let it sit too long, I have picked a couple nice caches in the area that get some more frequent visits in order to swap with. I started it out as a members only and recently opened it up for public use. Until we see more frequent caching up here, its is generally slow compared to other areas. Thats not to say that there isn't a fare share of caching going on, its just generally slower overall. I usually post a note with a Bug drop for the cache. Currently have a couple bugs I would like to move since they've sat a bit too long. MY PROBLEM is I am killing time on here since the wife gets on me when she cannot go with too She's stuck at W....W.....W.... that word!
  6. at the risk of sounding smug, where are the "hidden rules" posted for the world to see. I found these rules posted at the site, found many "suggestions" in the forums, but specifically no posted rules against quite alot of it out there that makes up the sport. from http://www.geocaching.com/faq/: What are the rules in Geocaching? Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple: 1. Take something from the cache 2. Leave something in the cache 3. Write about it in the logbook Where you place a cache is up to you.
  7. I am fairly new to GC (6 mos) still consider myself a newbie of course, but it appears that there is always a catch 22. The good people at GC.com took something interesting and gained quite the following. It is intended to be fun for all, and they have implemented "rules" as necessary. Noone is ever going to have a 100% solution in this world that will make 100% of the people 100% happy. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt as probably (and I use this next term DARINGLY) ALL of you do, or else you wouldn't participate. I myself have enjoyed it thoroughly, but have stepped on some toes too it seems. As this thread started out, and again rementioned, discovering discoveries on the web. Although the well intended picture can lead to bad feelings and angst or whatever else it may create, it happens. I don't see that it violates any "offical" GC rules, I am not out to collect icons or stats, just exploring another avenue of the "find". Am I bummed that someone deleted some of my true discoveries? of course. I feel they were legitimate per the logging requirements-- the CORRECT number and website for the TB. Consider a different perspective: What if the discoverer was handicapped? Can't enjoy the sport as many of you can. Sure, they get a few friendly caches, log a few travelbugs and move them along, but someone cooped up WANTING to be out there and killing time DREAMING about being out there starts discovering via owners pictures a way to amuse themself with the sport, and still have the "thrill of the hunt" Is this wrong? Is this questionable? Do you take THEIR finds away because you don't agree? I had one guy threaten to make a complaint if I didn't remove my logged discovery-only to find that he already did it. The game/sport/pastime is what you make of it, but consider it also what you make it for someone else. just my 2 cents. sorry if I offended anyone with it
  8. Sorry took so long to reply, forgotten where I had posted this and found it today. I got it back almost 2 weeks to the day from Garmin in TX. They exchanged the unit rather than repair it, its end of lifed product. They updated my registration with the new serial number for Mapsource data, and also registered it for v8 too. all I hadto do was get the v8 cd, and sync registration data through the software and I was back in business.
  9. and not to mention a technical or programming glitch that archives or offlines your cache. Ever miss paying thephone bill by 1 day? and when you get ahold of someone, it was a computer glitch and your payment didn't get posted as soon as they got it or whatever the excuse was? anyone here post on MI-geocaching.org? I have noticed that the time there is not on sync? My time here says 10 am today, theirs says 6 pm tonight? and for the record, I am in the same time zone as the server, I checked. but something like that could drop an active cache.
  10. I recently placed a cache near out county airport. I started out with a plat book I have here from last year. It showed that the county owned the property in question. Not knowing who the county official might be that I might contact, I contacted the local DNR office for input as it also functions as the snowmobile trail in the winter and has for years. I was approaching it as a homeland security concern and proximity to the airport--but well outside thier fence. He recommended the local official director for homeland security, which I happened to know (he runs a wireless internet service onthe side) and he gave the name of the appropriate official to contact for operations. All had heard of Geocaching in some way or form, but hadn't checked into it. After clarifying how it works and some of the proactive practices, and they knew it was a local opportunity, I think I got 3 more people interested in participating. Officials are people just like us at the end of the day--hobbies, sports, entertainment, and they typically know other officials too, which could help get a better name for the sport out there.
  11. I too am having this very problem. I had no problem getting an RMA from Garmin for repair/troubleshooting. MY biggest problem is that I don't want to give it up right away! Will be sending mine in on Monday 7/31/06. If you've sent yours in already, post back here so I know what kind of timeline it gets returned, I'll return the favor.
