  1. My personal kryptonite...when a cacher places as many caches as he/she can as fast as he/she can with little thought to detail. If you have the time and energy to place a zillion caches, find a little more time and energy to avoid places that are in the middle of garbage, or require climbing fences to retrieve the cache, (no matter how you approach it) or are in the middle of poison oak. (I know some PO is unavoidable, but placing one in the middle of a patch of it?) Thank you. I feel better now. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  2. I can't take the suspense...a CA geocacher has to know! Thanks! "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  3. A cacher in New York sent his WTC Rivet travel bug to our cache about a year ago and it finally made it there this weekend. Thanks, Marky, for dropping it off! The bug owner asked that it be left in our cache until September and I am then going to mail it back to him. If you are in the area, come check it out - this bug is made from a rivet from the World Trade Center. Thanks, and enjoy. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  4. quote:Originally posted by TeamJiffy:_Picnic/gathering this Sunday_ Hi East Bay Cachers, Here's a reminder that we're having a first-time regional get-together this coming Sunday, May 4 in your neck of the woods--Fremont Central Park. You're all invited, of course. Please go over to the cache page and RSVP. Look forward to meeting many of you! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=61553 -TeamJiffy Thank you for the info...unfortunately, I will be in Washington this weekend. I hope you all have fun! Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  5. This sounds like a good way to use GPS technology. No more wandering around the store aimlessly! "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  6. Diabolical Diablo We had some interesting experiences on the mountain this weekend. On Friday, we wanted to check on one of our caches and bring a plastic bag for the log book. On our way up, we ran into a man on the trail who was standing there naked, apparently enjoying the view (of the mountain, I hope, and not himself). He kind of nonchalantly pulled his shorts on as Barry approached, but was in no great hurry to put them on until he saw me. We checked on our cache and it was fine. I put the log book in the baggie...and put it in my backpack. I didn't realize it until we were almost back to the car and it was too late to go back. Saturday we hiked from Mitchell Canyon to the summit. We were resting at Deer Flat (the half way point) and a biker came over and joined us. He asked if we wanted to see something cool, and we said sure. (I was a little worried about what it might be after Friday.) He pulled out a ziploc bag with a dead bloody rattlesnake inside. He said he was going to skin it and display it in his house. We returned the log book yesterday with no problem - we did run into a family who was ripping wildflowers out of the ground. When we approached them, the turned and looked at us with what almost seemed like anger. I am not sure what they were doing. I don't want to know. Any other adventures out there this weekend? Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  7. There was one cache near me that I spent hours looking for the first time. I logged a DNF and went back the following weekend, looked for more hours, and finally found it. The cache owner correctly called it an evil hide. The thing is, if I had not found it on that second attempt, I would have gone as many times as I needed. It became personal and I would not be satisfied until it was found. I was just lucky - I found it by accident. I never knew I a year ago that I would obsess over small film containers. 8. quote:Originally posted by bthomas:I've enjoyed the Rundex runs and her special glass caches. It seems I'm in it for the plastic goodies and t-bugs. I'm happy with most all tuperwares I've found in area. It is amazing how many access points have been shown to me thru caching. Looking forward to finding your plastic trade toys. I love Rundex's caches. I will never forget her "Gnome's Home" cache...finding those little statues sitting in the forest was so eerie. And her crystal's were beautiful. I have a gnome in a planter box and a crystal hanging up in the sunlight. I guess I posted to get it off my chest, and to state my determination to place better caches. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  9. We've only found about 60 caches so far and have hidden 5. There seems to be a trend around here lately...quickly placed caches that pay little attention to detail. I am not in this for the trinkets, even though most of these caches have almost nothing in them, but I do like a good hunt. Some of the ones we have seen involve fun things like climbing fences, crawling through prickly vines, and pulling the cache out of poison oak. Does anyone else out there feel like this? When we started caching we were so thrilled with the hunt...now we find ourselved grumbling all the time. We plan on placing some nice caches in the coming months, but we can't improve this on our own. Any thoughts? Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  10. Two of our caches are in an area that we frequently visit, so we check them whenever we feel like seeing how they are doing. We always bring extra log books, trinkets, plastic baggies, etc. because you never know what will be needed. This cache has a very specific theme, and since it is a take something leave nothing cache we restock it as needed, about every six months so far. And of course, if we see DNF's or no one has visited in months, we check out the cache as well. It's great that you are thinking ahead! "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."

(and don't steal my cache!) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=59878 -Unfurl Cool! I hope we will be able to head up there this weekend. Our cache was approved today and is also waiting to be found! Enjoy! "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  12. quote:Originally posted by Marky:Oh, he's well past 700 by now. If he posted that he's 6 away, it usually means that by the time your reading it, he's well past. I wish I had as much time to cache as he does! "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  13. quote:Originally posted by vdbalamo:That's a shame that your bananas cache is gone so soon. I was hoping to do it tomorrow and the new ones in Benecia on my run to 700 (only need 6 more, but there are very few in the area left for me to find). Congrats on almost 700! That is an amazing feat. We placed a new one in Mount Diablo not too far from your Mitchell Rock cache...it is just waiting to be approved! "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  14. There are three parks that we really enjoy in the Concord area - Mount Diablo State Park, Diablo Foothills Regional Park, and Briones Regional Park. They all have many caches to choose from. Three of the caches we have hidden are in Diablo Foothills - if you get the chance, I hope you'll visit. You'll probably find more suggestions if you post this question to the SF Bay Area thread or the SF East Bay Area thread. I hope you enjoy your visit! Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  15. Oh, no! We were hoping to make it to your cache this weekend. I'm sorry to hear about that. So far none of our caches have been taken (knock on wood) but I always worry about that. I hope you'll place another one soon. Krystal P.S. I like your avatar caption. "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  16. On Saturday we found two caches in Diablo Foothills Regional Park and checked on our WTC Memorial Cache while we were there. On Sunday we hiked to the summit of Mount Diablo - we weren't looking for caches, but what a great hike! My mom called me and she wants to try out "this cache thing" on Friday. I may have a convert! Beautiful weather this weekend, wasn't it? Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  17. Hey Fizzymagic - I'm from your general area, so I know which caches you are talking about. When the first one was posted I thought it would be fun to "think like a geocacher" and find the cache by intuition. I thought it was a unique idea until the next one was approved. It's hard enough to find a cache with exact coordinates sometimes. Like the moving caches around here, I am probably going to ignore these until they drive me so crazy that I find them. Thanks for posting this. I didn't know if it bothered anyone else. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  18. I seem to be one of the lucky people immune to the dreaded poison oak. I slipped while hiking and grabbed onto a large clump of it to catch my fall...nothing. This weekend while caching I stuck my hand into it...nothing. So far, I have been lucky. This doesn't mean that I'm not careful, though. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  19. Thanks for the link. I'll check them out. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  20. We found this cache this weekend. It was quite enough for one day. If you like a challenge, go for it! We were glad the weather was nicer than expected. "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  21. Playground Madness #1...we have to get around to that one soon. I don't know about easy, but when you post a message you should have a box next to the "Instant Graemlins" called "Instant UBBCode". Click on the "URL" button. Enter the complete URL. It will ask you what you want to call it. For the example below, I typed "here". It will add something funky to your message, but when you post, you get what I placed here. Does this help? Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  22. Briones in the rain sounds good to me, but my husband hates hiking in the mud more than anything. I'm willing to wait until things dry up a little bit. Whooo's Wanda has a special place in my heart because it was our first first to find. I think you'll find Rundex's caches to be some of the best in the area. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  23. I don't know if there have been gatherings specific to the East Bay, but there have been Bay Area gatherings. There are some awesome caches on Mount Diablo. Some of them will really let you know what kind of shape you're in. We were planning to go to Briones this weekend for cache maintenance, but it looks like it's going to rain. "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  24. This sounds like a good thread. I like Briones, Diablo Foothills Regional Park, and Mount Diablo State Park. Any other East Bay people out there? Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
  25. quote:Originally posted by mmp: quote:Originally posted by Ron Streeter:There are a number of cache types I don't look for, and my caches which involve long hikes are ignored by most cachers, so the theory that we look for what we like seems to hold. I usually just lurk here, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth. I admit I have found a lot of urban micros, but if I had a choice, I would much prefer a "long hike cache". I am a lurker, too, and I would like to see more caches with long hikes in the Bay Area. We found this cache this weekend and the hike was awesome. We are planning on placing some caches that will require moderate hikes, but would love to find more, too. Krystal "Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
