  1. Seriously one of the only real method that will work and people will find you is using spot. I swear by spot, I own one and have used to to track my position on google maps for my family to see. If I get into trouble though, I can press that button and search and rescue will be there in no time. Don't leave home without it because most of the places I go there is no cell service so its not even an option and its cheaper than a sat phone per minute rate on what I pay per year. I aslo have the $100,000 insurance for $7.95 a year that will cover rescue attempt costs if you are charged.
  2. There are some unit that will not to custom poi's like the navigon and there is a new sony one on the market. Using Gsak with the nuvi and the tomtom macros makes like easier, you don't even have to load up a poi editor, because gsaks macro does it for you.
  3. One other thing, it has cut down my prep time to under 15 minutes once I get the new pqs for that weekend. Remeber I am loading up somethime 4 or 5 devices. So its really not wasting that much time, once you learn it you will get better at it.
  4. The Garmin Nuvis can do this and they have a real nice gsak macro made for it. A few cons of this line is you need to be in 2D mode and be zoomed really close in to see your custom pois (geocaches). TomTom x30 line has a real nice macro also, not as advanced as the nuvi line but if your only using it to visaully see when a cache is coming up like I do then it is perfect. Unlike the nuvi line , you can see your custom pois with the other pois and you do not have to zoom in or go to 2D mode. Magellan 6000T is an older unit but I used this before my new tomtom and it had nice features like being able to touch a cache on the screen and route right to unlike on the tomtom I need to go to the view map screen to do it, on the magellan I can touch it from the nav map and touch route. POIS are not as customizable but it works well. As for the others I am not sure, I was just talking about the ones that I currently own. I am quite happy with the Tomtom 730 I use now, I just wish from the nav screen I could touch a cache icon and have it autoroute like the magellan instead I need to go to the view map screen and do it.
  5. I couldn't keep track of things without gsak. I have to load 4 differnt gps-r's when I go out caching (for the family). I like to be able to filter the list to see if other people have had at least 2 DNF in the log so I don't go to those caches because more than likley they are missing. I also have to use the macros for gsak for getting cache info into my mobile tomtom for my custom POIs. I used to use GSAK to do stuff for my PDA like exporting the database to my cachemate after I customize the cache list. I also exported Steets and trips data out from gsak to my pda for my pocket streets application. Since I bought the colorado, I don't have to do that anymore but it is a very helpful tool. The macros people design for GSAK are incredible and real time savers. Not sure what type of computer you have but I have multiple databases with thousands of caches in there and it runs smooth for me.
  6. Several people I read have had experiences where they will fix your problem even though the unit is out of warranty. I guess that would depend if you get a good rep on the phone that will cut you a break. Say something along the lines of ts a small annoynace and you will live with it but say there is nothing wrong else wrong with the unit except for a button issue. Hehe ask them how much the button would cost as a part if it doesn't go well. Suck up to them on the phone or sweet talk them into letting you get it reapired under warranty. I used a similiar ploy when I had a hard drive go out that was a few months after warranty and it seemed to work with Maxtor. If all else fails call back every day till you get someone who will help you.
  7. You can get a spot. Then your friend can see where you are in your route. I just purchased one for safety reasons. When I go out hiking alone I can alert search and rescue if I get into trouble or my family can see exactly where I am using goodle maps and my exact trail. http://www.findmespot.com/Home.aspx
  8. OMG I fell off my chair laughing so hard.
  9. Magellan won't repair it. They will tell you that it is a legacy model and they no longer work on them.
  10. As far as I can tell there is not a way to do it. The pushpins are fixed all the time. What you can do is change the icon to the one you are going to and then change it to something else when you have completed it.
  11. Garmin comparison are usually not accurate. I run into the same issue comparing some of the nuvis. The 300 and 400 are identical except for the memory. Everything else down to the chipset and antenna is the same.
  12. Wow sounds like bad luck with gps units. Hopefully your replacement one will work better.
  13. Not sure if you want to spend the money but when I talked to accu-terra about the trail coverage of Glacier National Park they said they have all the trail heads and trails in the park mapped on their maps. Now I have not been able to acutally see it for myself without spending the 60 bucks on the mapset but accu-terra seems like really nice topo maps with trails already built in for the explorist.
  14. 300 has no mapping software preloaded on it. 400 has Topo 2008 Preloaded on it. 300 has 384 Megs of internal memory while the 400T has 4 gigs of internal memory. You can put a SD card of whatever size you want in either unit to add additional maps. As for hunting and fishing most people still prefer the 60CSx, the colorado are basically geocaching units.
  15. If you are looking for maps that can auto-navigate and have topo look here. http://www.uud.info/shop/catalog/product_i...;products_id=34 Its about $106.00 USD for the maps.
  16. Streets and trips does not give you a arrow to find the cache. I looked around and I am at a loss for any XP or vista products being able to give you pointing compass arrow to get to a cache. I mean there a ton of them out there for the pcoketpc. I looked at Garmin mobile PC but that only gives you street navigation and no topo. Not sure if it has a compass arrow
  17. I probably would not suggest taking a laptop geocaching. Figuring you need to keep it open while tracking and its just really bulky and not waterproof or drop proof. You might want to look into a cheap $100.00 gps.
  18. I have seen the compass arrow turning in the opposite direction of the cache also. It has happened twice, I fixed it by turning the unit on and off. I have not seen it on the 3.70 firmware yet. Redraw shouldn't be taking that long unless there is an issue with SD card you might want to reformat and put the maps back on and see if it corrects.
  19. Glacier National Park is not in canada. Magicmaps are canada based coverage. The new trail maps offered by accu-terra USA will have the trails you need. http://www.magellangps.com/products/map.as...amp;PRODID=2119
  20. Well there is a macro for gsak that will do paperless caching to a point for the 60Csx so it should work on the 76CSx. However one drawback is that one geocache will be listed multiple times to fit all the information. It is way cluttered in my opinion but it does work. Take a look at this thread. http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=8932
  21. I have gotten that also but it was because I did not have a satellite lock.
  22. I forgot about the Docviewer, you can export all your geocaches to html and store them on the tomtom. Only issue with that is there is no link to the acutal poi data stored on your tomtom and your html file. You have to use another script to upload the custom POIs to your tomtom and you will get very limited infotmations in the fields. So you would have to bounce back and forth between POI screen for routing and the doc viewer for reading info, really not helpful at all when driving.
  23. I have a tomtom also but I don't think it has the capability to do so like the garmin nuvis.
  24. Basemap is the same on all the tritons. Basemaps on all gps's are very limited. Don't expect much. Thats why you need to spend the extra money on maps. The triton 200 can be hooked to a computer. Now the explorist basemap which is the same for all models is very limited in my opinion and not very good but it worked for you so I can't compare them to the tritons.
  25. They all have a compass and you can load the maps on to them using either nat. geo maps or accu-terra maps. However the 500 and above are the only models that have an electronic compass. I had a triton for a little while and found it sluggish, and slow and it locked up quite a bit. It went back to the store. I would probably go with a 500 model or higher if you can.
