  1. Two-part epoxy and construction adhesive are good options. Spend time reading labels on glues at the big box store. They each have their strengths and weaknesses.
  2. And gives the finder no clue at all about the actual size of the container. Not sure that really helps. If you place a bison in another object already on site, do you always call it an 'other'? Is that lack of a clue to size so terrible? Doesn't it just increase the "D" rating? And doesn’t the category "other" avoid the "endless arguments" and accurately suggest that size is either very small or ambiguous?
  3. He stated a preference. We all know the general maximum distance we can walk. We may not want to do that each time out. Also, sometimes 161m *is* a huge walk (example shown).
  4. Should there be (is there) this lock-step mathematical connection between difficulty and DNF? I suspect that the more difficult caches are sought out by more experienced and skilled cachers who go there expecting to spend a lot of time, and they have a better than 50% success rate because they *work* as long as they need to. Yes, that same cache would probably go unfound by 75% of beginners, some of whom succumb to boredom or fatigue, and some of whom could look all day and not find it!
  5. By any chance did you have dinner at Dennis' Hideaway back then?? Three or four picnic tables in a backyard near the airport...and gourmet cooking! I'm sure there was a bottle of sherry pepper sauce on the table, too. Formal types raised eyebrows, but it was an authentic experience...unlike, say, the Southampton Princess. Google tells me they're no longer in existence, but there are articles and stories online. Not to be confused with an Inn of the same name in St. Vincent.
  6. If we carried everything we "might need" JIC, I'd definitely have to give up the UL backpacking I'm so fond of today. We try to decipher what's said in the description and take what might be needed each day out. Well said! There's the "complete toolkit," that stays at home or maybe in the car, and then there's the "portable toolkit" or "today's toolkit" to carry based on anticipated needs. The ultimate boundaries have been discussed before.
  7. I repeated my comment because it's a good, succinct summary. Nan, I agree. The practice I've seen here is - and this is a suggestion for the OP - is to *find an existing hole* and then *note in the description that it was preexisting.* Reason? A hole even with permission gives new players the impression that hole drilling is okay.
  8. It belongs to the city, I guess. I'd debate whether drilling a hole is 'destroying' it...'damaging' at worst. And since the hole will have wood inside put back inside it (in the form of the dowel), is it really so bad? But I take your point...and I do have some qualms and reservations on this point about the idea. With local caching in the US, drilling holes in trees, beams or anything else on public property will cause the proposed cache to be rejected. If unknown to the reviewer but later reported, it will be archived.
  9. Maybe, but check out my post in "Face It." The link here turned up a fine image that I used there! A keen alertness is all that's needed to find treasure...who knows, maybe even an eighth wonder of the world!
  10. Don't lose sleep over it...it's too "insignificant." I'm not going to delve into it either. It sounds like a "tempest in a teapot" that can easily be resolved - if needed - by notifying headquarters.
  11. I wouldn't care a bit. Not at all. The gadget caches would still be part of my history, and a part of the history of everyone who found them. Many would care. And it's history. A landmark achievement in sports is not canceled when a player retires. And yes, there is always a new "employee of the month," but the one for, say, June, 2020 cannot change. I have given FPs to caches that impressed me a lot at the time but might impress me a little less now. Would I rewrite history and take away the FPs? Never, whether the cache is archived or not. You get an FP to award for every 10 caches you find. You award them, saying in effect, "Your hide is in the top 10% of caches I have found." Historical facts, done and dusted.
  12. The smiles confuse me. If it's a serious question, it should go to the main forum. If otherwise, wot am I missing?
  13. "Private" cache? (which would explain the locals, but not the out-of-stater...unless the out-of-stater was visiting a relative in town there) Just some random musing...
  14. A few years ago ago someone said they were on a Greyhound bus that passed right by the cache. Earlier they asked the driver if he would stop for a couple of minutes. He wouldn't.

Since they didn't move it, I sent a note today also. Good luck to your daughter for her trip in a few weeks!

    Travel advice

I'm sure that some locals may have helpful suggestions. This is actually an "on-topic" topic, so a moderator may move this thread to a location where it gets more views by those able to provide more specific advice.
  17. For the super careful, put on disposable gloves during the search and discard in a trash can immediately after. And i assume you already have 70%+ alcohol hand sanitizer in your car and use it every single time you get in the car, wiping your car key and door handle as well!
  18. With one cache repeatedly missing and another recently missing, they may be issues with the location (too many muggles?).
  19. Things really ain't that bad. Really. Sorry to hear of your negative experiences.
  20. Travel far, get near GZ and you've "earned" a find. And when one feels entitled, so does the next! No need for even a photo - just reference the other cat's photo!
  21. Excellent topic and great stories that I can't top with sagas of mere one hour hikes. This may be an "on topic" topic that they'll move to the main forum.
  22. Those are good techniques as well! Since the rest of my post was orphaned on the previous page, I'll add it here, since the "think outside the box" or "think beyond the pen" advice could be useful.
