  1. After downloading the caches on Saturday to GSAK I went to do the CJS caches on the Susquenanna, Port Deposit and Elk Neck on Monday morning. This morning, Thursday I see a Port deposit 2 and and Elk Neck 2, which was not published until yesterday the 8th, whats up with that? Also at the kick off Saturday I heard people talking about already finding some of the caches. They were suppose to be released at the EVENT. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong. I cant imagine publishing a CAM cache 2 days after the start !

  2. I use my BlackBerry for caching and it works great. The only downfall is the battery life isn't the best.

I'm thinking of getting a geomate jr to go along with my BlackBerry. I don't have a PC so I like the idea of the pre-loaded caches.

Can anyone tell me the cons of the geomate jr? IE why I would want a "regular" GPSr instead?

    Thanks!

At some point you are going to want to update the data base so you need to use a PC, perhaps a friends. The Jr is great right out of the box but it shows a limited amt of info. If you print out cache info I guess that would work. The Jr has a very good chip set so there is no problem locking on to the location. You will not be able to load pocket quiries.

If you use the BB to get the name and cache info I think you will do fine with the Jr. but later on I think you will get a GPSer with more bells . HAPPY CACHING!!! PS. Target carries the JR but have not seen the updater there

  3. ... There are special keystrokes to do a hard reset; you'll have to search for them since I've forgotten what they are.

    Hard Reset for 60CSX:

    1) Power OFF

    2) Hold Quit, Enter, and Out. Press Power.

All data will be erased and Factory Default settings applied.

    Thank you!

i JUST TRIED THAT AND NOTHING HAPPENED

  4. We bought one. I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about it. My basic review is this: Before we even found our first cache, we had decided it was time for an upgrade.

While waiting for the product to arrive, we had been looking at local caches. We picked one at the park right up the street. We often walk our dog up there, so he can play in their leash free area. As we are walking, we turn on the unit. For some reason, it keeps pointing us to a cache .7 miles the OTHER direction. As we get closer to the park, the directions keep pointing away. I have the print out in my hands, and this cache has been there since 2005. Thanks, that's really handy.

Eventually, we finish walking the dog and head home. The crew loads up in the truck (TravelingTreo, plus 1) and we head to another interesting looking cache on the list. Also, not in the Geomate.jr. This cache is newer, from November 2009. Well, now we know the unit wasn't flashed with recent caches when it was sent to us. Luckily, I did manage to find the screen that shows us our CURRENT coordinates....well, half of them at a time. With a LOT of toggling back and forth, and a lot of walking back and forth, we finally manage to find the cache without any help from the geomate.

We will be ordering a Garmin next week.

    Justin.

Did you look on the site to see when the last time those cached were found? I think it only shows caches found within the last 6 months or so.

  5. Question on this unit???

If it only shows the directional circle with an arrow of the direction of the find and no map, how do you get to the area to begain with???

Same as everyone with a non-mapping GPS does, I suppose."

How do those with a non-mapping GPS get to the starting point?

    thanks

You start out by looking at the map on GC.com. I think most people start with a non-mapping GPSer

  6. Last night I stopped to get my mail and as I got out of my car my 60 fell off my belt to the ground and then into a storm drain. I had to leave it there all night as I was going to work. This AM I went to the storm drain and opened the cover and retrieved my 60. I turned it on and its still works great just a small crack in the screen . Garmin makes good stuff!!!!!!

  7. G'day All

After not being on the forums for a little while, I was very happy to see the latest comments, pics, and shared experiences after logging in this morning. So much so, I thought I would share some pics of my own. So why haven't I been on the forums recently?? Well, I managed to escape for a road trip with friends from Germany...

A couple kids, a few Geomate.jr's, and the state of Utah make for some awesome geocaching!

Field testing of the Geomate.jr (complete with drying bathers...)

    Cheers

My nephew kidnapped my JR for a road trip to Florida so I havent really used it much. Looking forward to his report.

  8. G'day All

Sorry for disappearing for a bit there - actually managed to get away for a little scuba diving and geocaching R & R. But I'm back and eager to help!

To answer some of the recent questions:

For the Mac users, even though the Update Kit will only support PC on day one, you will NOT need to buy a different Update Kit when we do support Mac. It is only web/software development we need to complete in order to support Mac with no change to the hardware component needed.

High sensitivity GPS? Yep, the Geomate.jr uses the SiRFstarIII GPS engine which is arguably the best performing GPS engine on the market today and is what most of the high end, more expensive GPS receivers use.

If I've missed any other questions, please let me know!!

    Cheers

    Warren

Somewhere you mentioned that you would hope that retailers would keep an update cable in store . Do you mean that they would do updates on units before selling them?

    From the guidelines:

This forum is intended only for personal selling or giving away of geocaching related items. No company or business postings/advertising are allowed.

While it may not have been the OP's intent to really promote a store, the end result is that's what happens.

We'd like to keep these forums for the personal exchange of equipment as noted.

    Thanks.

  10. Hi....I need a decent PDA for paperless caching. I bought a very old Palm Visor that has crashed and burned; need a replacement...would like a newer and better one, with a backlight; this one was so old it didn't have that!

Have you looked on E.bay. I just bought a new in the box Zire31 for 64.00 Its color backlite and plays music

  11. Hope this is the right place for this question. I am seeing a lot of caches lately that give a number and say to add it to the seconds, and I would like to know where I can find a set of conversions between the various notations since my math abilities are zip.

Disregard, I found what I was looking for.

Could you let us know what you found?

  12. I'll add yet another ditto to the $10 pole from WalMart (or Target, or Dicks, or KMart, etc.). I have a single pole (I can see the use of two poles, but I usually need a free hand for holding my GPSr or my son).

BUT, I'm thinking about upgrading to a hiking pole that doubles as a monopod or expands to a tripod for taking pictures. Does anyone have any experience with either of those?

I made a stick many years ago out of an old wooden closet rod. I ruffed it up with my pocket knife and stained it and made a strap for it. last year I carved my Geo name into it.

I bought a thing at Walmart called a bottle pod I believe. It fits on a water bottle and also my stick. I havent seen them at WM lately but they are on-line.

  13. I admit I was a little harch and may have made the mistake of believing the news report. I appologise to the owner for jumping the gun.

On the MGs site someone said they believe it was an MM container. I hope we can get this cleared up so we dont get a black eye.

Have they ever reported on the CITO events?

  14. Apparently they are shipping a version 33 that has corrected this. Version 32 seems to have all the internet horror stories of melt downs.

Although look hard enough and I'm sure you'll hear about issues with this version as well. As with any product, people are typically more vocal when it is defective than when it works as advertised.

I just recieved my La Cross from AMAZON, how do I check for the version?

  15. Whatever battery's you chose don't fry them with a quick charger. Thomas Distributing have La Crosse BC-900 for $35.00. Best charger out there.

Just curious, was there any specific reasons for choosing the La Crosse over the Maha?

    http://www.thomas-distributing.com/maha-mh...ery-charger.php

    Norm

They are basically the same unit . The La Crosse is $25.00 easier on the wallet.

Thanks for all the help I just ordered the CROSS charger from AMAZON with free shipping!!

  16. Download Garmin's POI Loader.

Place your GPX file(s) in a folder on your computer.

Run POI Loader and select the folder as the source of the data.

POI Loader will create a file named POI.GPI on the destination you select.

Note that POI Loader will overwrite any previous POI.GPI files on the destination location.

IF IT OVERWRITES HOW DO GET MORE poiS INTO THE gps
