  1. Sorry to take so long. I called the first garmin number listed by el diablo and, after being asked my units serial number and date of purchase, was told to try a few button sequences (I think they were page/enter/power which should have reset it and I am not certain about the other one but I think it was zoom-out/power) and when that did not work he told me it would need repair work and gave me an adress to ship it to. I then lost the adress and called back two days later and the second person I talked to asked about a car power adapter cable (which I had not used) then gave me the same adress. I reccomend calling garmin at that number as they were very helpful. I asked about my screenshield and was told to try to try to take it off as they might have to replace the unit.Bible Reader
  2. Thanks for the very quick replies! I will call garmin and see what they say. I also haven't used a car power adapter. I hooked it up to my computer a while back, but it has worked fine since then. I am glad that they have such wonderful costumer service.
  3. 1. So, I got my new legend CX and am getting used to using it and have taken it hunting, jeeping, dirtbiking, and found one geocache. I am on a vacation out of state and turned it on and off several times this morning and it was working fine. We stopped and I turned it off and maybe ten minutes later I tried to turn it back on again. Nothing. Now in the evening it still won't turn on with new batteries, or via the usb cable. Any suggestions before I call Garmin? Oh yeah I have (accidentally) run the batteries so low that it wouldn't turn off and the screen just got really light, but it worked fine with new batteries. 2. Also It has worked well and seems to be accurate as far as gpsrs go, But one complaint, I had taken it jeeping for most of the week and then went dirtbiking with my brother and afterwords I looked at the screen that has odometer, max speed, moving average etc. and found that we had (according to the gps anyway) attained a maximum speed of 192 miles per hour and I know we never reached 70 over the whole week even with highway driving. 3. Does anyone know where I can get a good handlebar mount for my dirtbike? I've seen some bicycle mounts but I'm not sure if they're big enough and I definetly don't wan't my $200+ dollar investment to be hanging out on some flimsy piece of plastic I don't trust while I'm cruising down the offroad trail! 4. One more: what is the phone number I need for garmin to ask about problem 1.? (I left my owners manual at home) Thankyou very much for any helpful replies!
  4. I just bought a legend cx and am still getting used to it. I was just randomly scanning through and reading when I in the setup section I selected USB mass storage and it turned to a screen that pictured a gps hooked up to a computer. I'm not sure if it locked up or what. I don't have a mapsource to load to it and the backup button isn't working the on off button doesn't work either (and, niether does garmin tech support on saturday). I don't want to hurt anything by taking the batteries out, WHAT DO I DO? Thankyou
  5. I just bought a legend cx and am trying to find which topo is the best. I don't really wan't to spend a lot of money either, This thing wasn't cheap! My question is, does u.s. topo 8.0 have the entire united states, or just unlock codes. Also, mine has a 64mb card, how much can I load without upgrading the card? All I wan't for now is western CO, but sometimes we travel to texas, or moab UT and I would like to know how much it will hold. Thankyou! I hope I was cear enough!
  6. I'm sure someone has seen it, I typed the price but wasn't paying attention, I guess, and didn't type the site as well. Thankyou for the help!
  7. A while back I found a website that had a legend c bundled with a topo cd for $276. But now that it sounds good, I can't find the site. Does anyone else know where it is? Is that a good deal? Is there a better place to buy it? Also, there is an accessory pack at different places that has either metro guide or cityselect,(not either or, I just not sure which it is ) an auto mount, and an auto power cable, but my question is, I thought that it had a firmware update to make the legend c auto routing capable, is this correct? thankyou
  8. sounds like some neat stuff I am very new and still deciding on a gps, so my 2 cents may only be worth that. But be careful with Cheap compasses. If they find the cache they probably can get back, but still, a compass that did not work correctly could posibly really mess someone up. I will probably leave handburned wooden nickels. good posts!
  9. At target the legend adventure pack is on sale for $130 and that includes a carry case and an instructional dvd. That is probably what I will get for my first gps. Also the used legends in good condition go for about $90 In the garage sale section of this forum. So what I'm going to do is buy the legend mentioned above to get more used to all of the terminology and use and then if I'm not happy with it I didn't lose much money to sell it and buy a higher end gps. I hope I was able to explain that well. Also, if you do what I just recomended and decide you want more accessories for the plain ol' legend, most mapping software, mounts, and stuff will also fit a legend C, cx, Vista C, and cx. So that if you want a higher end etrex, the accessories will interchange.
  10. How do you guys compare national geographic top to garmin's topo software? Does it have good enough streets that I could just use it instead of buying metro guide and garmin topo? Does it auto route? Can I download them to a gps and then use the gps to auto route function? Thanyou!
  11. I AGREE! Tell me where it is when you make it or find it! There is an absolute deluge of sites selling these cool little gadgets. I am trying to make a list for personal use, but it is hard. Whoever makes such a site should also ad ratings from people who have bought there. Good Idea! Thankyou all for your feedback!
  12. I am almost decided on the legend cx but a few more questions, Can I load topo and city select on at the same time? How does it do under cloud cover? Thankyou!
  13. Sounds like a good site. I'm in the U.S. though. How do you convert Lbs.(I can't find the key, I don't think my keyboard even has it lol ) to U.S. dollars? Is trancontinental shipping an ordeal? Thankyou!
  14. Yeah, My priorities have changed. The first set of priorities listed were for a starter gps that would eventually have traded for something better. I am buying the something better first in the form of a legend C or cx. I am planning to have this unit for at least several years. Thankyou for the response!
  15. How well does the legend, or legend C or cx do under cloud cover? I really don't have too much tree problem in western CO, but there could be clouds. Do I Just Avoid relying on it under cloud cover?
  16. I am looking into buying my first gps. (As you can tell from my last topic) I have found several different sites that seem to have good deals. I am sure I am not the only one in the getting started section that is going to buy a gps soon. I have found that Gps on sale has a good price on the legend cx but haven't looked at shipping yet. We all (at least me) wan't to hear about your experiance and your ratings of a site, it doesn't matter what brand you bought, Just rate the site's (or store's) prices and service. Thankyou! P.S. I don't mean to be spamming, but it was in a thread about cheap gpsrs that I last posted this question, I thought more people would benefit from it here.
  17. I was looking for the legend C and gpsonsale.com has a cx for $230. Has anyone bought from this site befor? It seems like a pretty good deal. What is your opinion? Thankyou, you guys are so helpful! I have already changed my mind about tactics on buying a gps since I started this thread.
  18. Thankyou very much for all of the replys. I would really like to have a color screen and mapping availability, but I think I will go with the legend. I was asking about the summit because I thought it was cheaper. What advantage does the Vista C have over the Legend C. If I skip the buy one, upgrade later mindset then maybe a legend C would be good. Do you think there is any reason for me to want the cx model? By the way, How does a firmware update work? How much does it cost? The more I spend on the base model the less I spend on software. Where do you recomend buying from that has good prices on the legend and the legend C? Thankyou for all of your help for a noobie
  19. I will be using it for caching, dirtbiking, and in two years driving. A handle bar mount would be nice to have available. I had looked at the legend, but it just keeps getting one step better(legend, legendc, legendcx, vista, vistac vistacx etc.etc.) I think I would like to start as cheap as I reasonably can, and once I'm into it and have got a little more used to the terms, I might go with something like a vista c (maybe by then it will be a little cheaper). Does the summit have WAAS?What kind of batt. life does it get? It sounds like a neet starter, how much does it cost? Isn't one of the gecko series kind of similar? I will list the things that count most to me in a gps from highest to lowest. 1. price 2.ease of use to cache and track trails 3.mapping 4.battery life 5.electronic compass Can you recomend any other gpsr? I'm just trying to do my research before I buy my first GPS. Thankyou
  20. I would like to buy a gpsr in the $100 range. I don't wan't a magellen, they seem too hard to use. How is the Lawrance I go2? It seems like pretty good bang for the buck, But how well does it get sat. lock? How does it compare to the etrex yellow? I wan't to start small, not get into this $350 and decide I don't like it. I would just bet that there are a lot of other people out there that are in the same boat. Try to list some of the pro's con's of the use of each one. Ease of use is a biggie for a brand new cacher. I don't want to get in over my head and get one with too many features that is just not fun. Thankyou so much for the help.
  21. So What is the downside of buying used (like off of Ebay)? They have good prices, but coudn't there be some kind of damage? Like with cell phones I've heard that they can get water damage. People are trying to bring them back to radio shack and they get no waranty beacause of water damage, they claim they didn't even know it happend. Thanks for the help. Oh Yeah, doesn't the etrex yellow not have WAAS like the legend, seems like that would be a pretty big drawback. For me any way
  22. What are some of the pro's and cons of buying used, especially off of ebay? Is water damage ever a problem? Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the advantage of having a vista with a compass that it will point me directly to the cache, vs. having to align the unit north-south with another compass. And instead of having to be moving to get a heading (or whatever it is called, I'm very new) that you can stand still? Will this help in close range? Without one (A built in compass) Can I change the settings (On, say, a legend) and the arrow just point to where I'm going, as long as I'm moving? Will it turn exactly as I turn, like a real compass pointing north, instead of the arrow only changing every once in a while.
  23. I think I got it down this time.
  24. I tried to load an avatar, lets see if it worked.
