  1. Maptech.com is another source for this under their advanced search. Same situation though; you need to convert the format. But I've used this successfully several times.
  2. I used rechargable alkalines in my digital camera for a while. It was a disaster. Because of the high power the camera needs, I could only get 20-30 pics off a set. I switched to NiMh and they do *much* better. I also use NiMh in my SporTrak gps and have been quite pleased with them and would highly recommend that option. The only downside to them from my perspective is that NiMhs loose some of their charge over time when not in use. So get a charger that keeps a trickle charge going, and take them straight from the charger to use. I should also reinforce that I have found my NiMhs capable of lasting through *many* more charging cycles in the long run. So even though they are more expensive up front, my experience is that they pay for themselves quickly.
  3. I guess now when the fire dept comes to the kindergarten class to teach safety, instead of teaching "stop, drop, and roll" they'll have to teach the megellan hula.
  4. I've never been quite bored enough to try this, but I remember running across a website that describes drawing with your GPS: www.gpsdrawing.com It has potential...

  6. Thanks for the help. I guess my question was not so much *whether* to place another cache in a park that already has one, but how to make it different enough to make it worthwhile. There were some helpful ideas in this thread. Thanks.
  7. Help me out on this one. What would be the point of knowing such a stat.? What are you trying to learn from it and why?
  8. Another thread started a question in my mind that I think merits input. Thinking about placing a cache, many geographic areas (including mine) are reaching a saturation point ie there is already a cache in every park around. Sometimes more than 1 in larger parks. My question is what merits a new cache in close proximity to another? For example, I can envision a situation where there is already a single 1/1 cache in a park that it would be legitimate to add another cache that would be quite different - like a tougher multicache or microcache. My question is what are some ideas that make a cache different enough from existing ones that makes hiding another cache worthwhile? Or am I all wrong? Are people so happy having another cache to seek that they don't care if there's a bunch of them in the same park, even if they are all similar?
  9. I'm not ready to say that planting a cache at an airport is a bad idea. On the other hand, I'm not sure I would want to be found stashing away a mysterious box on airport grounds given the heightened awareness of such things. Guess it all depends on the situation and your relationship with staff. Something to be considered though.
  10. I tried using "Hitchhiker's Guide" for geocaching. But when I entered 42 as my coordinates (the ultimate answer to everything) I couldn't find anything there. Maybe a bulldozer had already come through?

  12. I'm no expert, having just started and having used only the SporTrak (although I look at a friend's Garmin Legend before I made my purchase). However to answer your question, the SporTrak comes with a wriststrap which hooks to a ring on the fastener (screw) to the battery compartment at the bottom of the unit. I use a cell phone case with a belt hook to carry it, and it works well while in that case. I would say the packaging of the SporTrak is at least as nice as the Garmin and is easy to use in either the left or right hand.
