  1. Yes cut the box and mail it. However, I learned this the hard way with these birds.....make a photo copy of it first! After I sent mine in they said they didn't receive it! And the Wizbang working for the rebate company said it didn't matter that I already sent it. I took a picture of the box showing the UPC removed and mailed it to the company from which I bought the GPSr, Magellan customer service and also to the super efficient rebate company. I did hear from the company that sold it and they said I should have made a photo copy of the label before I mailed it. Never heard a word from anyone else but eventually the rebate arrived many months later. Now I copy all UPC labels before sending in rebates.
  2. Found the answer......don't use the autodetect feature in Mapsend. Just go straight to upload and the port isn't busy from the autodetect feature. Acutally, I found the answer on the Mapsend support page. This seems to be a problem with XP and 2000. I do feel a little silly for not just having checked the support page before posting a question. However, your input was appreciated.
  3. Just purchased Mapsend Topo and it is able to locate my SportTrak Pro on Com 1. However, when I attempt to upload waypoints it says the port is busy and thus will not upload. No other hardware has ever been installed to Com 1 and I logged off all other users on the computer. I still have the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help provided.
  4. Date code: 3202 received as a gift 12/25/03. no cracks, but did back out the screws and will keep an eye out for developing cracks.
  5. My question is close enough that I'll add it to this thread. I have an older Magellan 315. It works great....seeming to always guide us to within just a few feet of a cache location. Today however, I was with a friend who had a spanking new SportTrak. After getting both units up and running I noticed that they had differing coordinates displayed. I left both units side by side in an open field for about 30 minutes or so. Although the coordinates did get a little closer to the same numbers they were still off by enough that my kids would have given up looking for a cache and complained all the way home! I'm guessing they were off by about 80-100 feet from each other. Why?
  6. Congratulations! 100 is surely a very large number. However, the stories you've posted and the caches you've hidden outweight even this large number. Again, congratulations. CAPPD
  7. How long were you writing in that log book for the father to have time to notify the ranger and the ranger to respond? Did you have the geocache page with you for hints and to use as proof? We, as a family, have biked past two young guys kissing at a park. We were even on the family side of the lake when this happened! That park is notorious for gay play by males and females. ( for the girls!) Seems most parks in the area are used for this kind activity. It made for a delicate conversation at the dinner table a few nights later when the kids finally broached the subject. We just hope we never run into anything more explicit. In closing......wonder if they ever wash those handcuffs! EWWWWWWWWWWWW!

    GPSr compass

Thanks for the insight. Now we understand why we found it necessary to use the distance readings and not the direction indicator. Again, thanks.
  10. Why when the compass is spinning in all directions, due to heavy tree cover, does the distance keep decreasing even as we are walking in a direction the contradicts the compass needle?
  11. We were in a Pennsylvania state park on Sunday where the cache was removed do to damage done to the area by cachers. This cache was unique in that the cache owner was also the same trail organization that removed it. What upset us most was the fact that the people that removed the cache didn't have the courtesy to notify the site that the cache was removed, thus preventing even more damage to the area! Perhaps it's time for a new paragraph in the cache welcome letter asking anyone of authority who removes a cache to notify the owner or website thus prevent even more bushwacking by people who refuse to give up looking. Also, the above info about the cache description stating how far off of the trail it is placed is excellent.

    Accuracy

Although newbies, we are not having any problems using the information given to locate a cache. However, we notice that more experienced cachers (both before and after our visit) are posting adjusted coordinates. Is there any chance this could be due to using various manufacturer's equipment?
