  1. Plenty of deer ticks and chiggers out on Long Island. Permthrin is what I use though it doesn't always repel all of those nasties. Once some friends and I walked through a nest and had hundreds on each of us. I have seriously curtailed my caching on Long Island through the warm months and only attack the area in the dead of winter. Good luck to you, let us know if anything remedied the situation.
  2. Ummm no. Stop generalizing, it proves nothing. What are you saying? It is my opinion that people in the Generation ME play their way. If you are offended, oh well.
  3. This may be a stupid question, but what am I supposed to be seeing in the 2nd photo?
  4. That's too funny! Are you gonna tell him thats not the cache or log? LOL
  5. Your buddy's fake FTF is in line with Generation ME logic. I woulda, shoulda, coulda, but didn't. Though FTFS aren't officially recognized, he didn't sign the log first, therefore he is second or whereever he is in the log. But again, these Generation ME players all say they play the game their way. So let him "cheat" his FTF and go on and about your day
  6. If your friend is collecting cash for these mazes then yes, its a commercial cache. Your analogy of what you are proposing with an island or a metro park is flawed. If the island is a public space then its not commercial. (Not understanding the ferry boat issue but if I am reading this correctly, One can operate their own boat to the island and not use a ferry service). A metro park is city owned or a public place. Most parks do not charge for entry, and those that do are usually state owned and are placed with implicit permission. As for a temporary cache? Those are usually frowned upon. Good luck with future placements!
  7. I have found many camo'd zip locks in PA. Gotta say not fond of them as they aren't the most water resistant. Don't feel silly, just chalk it up to more learning!!!
  8. Harry +1 Its like the worst of the forum is on there. I was on there briefly and thought I would be happy to post comments there but it became all about "we hate...so remove" or "we love...bring back" etc. without all the pithy forum poster remarks. Got boring after a while, lol.
  9. That would violate the no commercial guidelines. Besides what you are suggesting is that other Groundspeak project called "Waymarking" I tried it a bit at the beginning and got quickly board with it. Besides, if I want a nearby gas station or some place to eat its easy enough to go to the POI on the GPS and find something close by. But liking the way you think and it would be a good suggestion otherwise! Welcome to the game!
  10. Are there any attorneys around to settle the hornets nest that has just exploded?
  11. Well, reading the HINT it doesn't seem to be in the well. In fact, if ya think about what it means and where you were, you may understand what is meant. Classic newbie mistake
  12. River Song, traveling caches have been "outlawed" for sometime. Great idea but a few years too late. You maybe able to find the few traveling caches that exist that have been grandfathered in. BTW, love your caching name, I gather you are going to a DW convention. Have fun!
  13. Sounds like even newer cachers found the cache before you. Check out the other logs and see if they actually said they left the lollipops and send a note, or not. You would be under no obligation to do it, it would be just a courtesy so they understand that its an inappropriate item to leave behind. (The ear plugs, too but not a sure way to get the cache destroyed by wildlife) If it were me, I probably would have logged that there were inappropriate items in the cache to inform the CO as well, who knows, maybe they left it in the cache!
  14. My MacCaching doesn't have any issues, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?
  15. If this is the case then there are going to be a few hundred caches that will need to be archived in the NY area. I doubt anyone will voluntarily archive them. I guess, I just wish some people would just think about access issues before they put caches out.
  16. NUVI 500 is what you are looking for, can get on Ebay for $185+ ($249 at big box retailers) Look on Craigslist maybe there would be a good price in your area. Has everything you are looking for and more sensitive than your 205, though with someone that uses a dedicated hiking GPSr like me(60CSX), I felt the sensitivity was lacking. But you can't ask for more when getting voice directions, Geo descriptions, hints, logs, waterproof, rugged, nearest gas station and a topographic map! Settings for biking and walking, too. And not have to mod the macros on your GSAK through the roof to get all the Geo-info needed.
  17. The Oregon maybe out of your budget, but try to check eBay or Craigslist for a used one, same goes for the 60CSx. Gotta say the 60CSX is extremely rugged, and can be found for about $160 used or $200 new (they were just made obsolete by Garmin, so hurry if you wish to get one new). If you can swing it, get the 60CSx, a used Palm for $20-$40 AND CACHEMATE and you will be in business! Now of course, if you were using the NUVI for driving directions to the cache as well as finding it and getting info/logs, the above may be convoluted for you. I personally like having a dedicated hiking/geocache GPSr. So if you want an all in one, look at the NUVI 500, it has all the features (description, logs and voice driving directions) including topographic maps (I believe the 550 doesn't have that feature (?)). It is more rugged than a standard NUVI, however I personally feel the sensitivity wasn't as good as a 60CSx and after much consternation returned the unit. I saw few of the 500's on eBay for $185-$200 vs $249 at a retailer such as REI (but they have a very liberal return policy!) Let us know what you end up getting!
  18. I just thought caches were supposed to be non-restrictive to whomever wanted to find them and open to all that want to be able find the caches. I guess I was wrong.
  19. I did the same thing for a cache located in a New York State Park. Normally, there would have been a $5 entrance fee but I told the kid at the entry kiosk what I wanted to do and he let me in for free. As I stopped on the way out he asked, "did you find it?" I told him that he had and he said that it sounded like fun and might give it a try. He even wrote down the name of the web site. For the beach parking it sounds like it's actually managed by the city, and the city just sets the rates for residents/non-residents. I don't know if the same thing applied for the "resident only" park, but if the residential community actually owns the park they're essentially just granting permission to use it certain times of the year. The city or town may in fact own the park and have set the policies to only allow residents to use it. I'm not sure there is really much that can be done about beyond attending a city or town counsel meeting and expressing your concerns (i.e. why should my city/town taxes pay for something that only a small community is allowed to enjoy?) Downstate has many, many parks and beaches. Where you literally have to show your Drivers License so they can see Town residenceship. I honestly, don't want to let the security guards know about what I am doing because I honestly don't want to be the cacher that brings attention on what may be hiding in the woods. And be the one that fights town hall about who should and should not be able to enter a park. It just stinks that I can't even try for the high number of new FTFs to be had because of a residency issue. So I guess she was right it does suck for me!
  20. Bottomline, its not your responsibility to maintain someone else's caches. You can give some TLC if you are so inclined. The most honest thing you can do is let the CO know there is an issue with the cache. Look at it from another point of view, some COs don't want people messing with the cache and prefer to do it on their own. If you did something, you may have come to the forums with a different issue, like I just got flamed by a CO for trying to help! This particular CO seems to be tetchy, and prob shouldn't have any caches that they do not want to maintain. Forget about it and go on your way to have more fun
  21. Every reviewer uses their discretion on whether or not the cache placement adheres (or not) to guidelines. I found a cache in the sand in the Caribbean and can say that due to the natural forces, the cache did become compromised and was wet and damp from storms. Now that you aired this out in the forums, this conundrum is best left alone.
  22. While I can understand your angst, I don't believe the reviewers intervene in matters of policing outside of the actual caches. Try to contact once more and then honestly, you'll have to let it go. Good luck
  23. These town and county caches proliferate most of Long Island probably by the 100s. And it really does stink when I get to the gate and they say its for residents only or can't go for a FTF after publication in high season having to wait 4 months to clear an area of a map, if I so wished. Taking them offline in the high season? That is highly doubtful that those COs would do that, I once told a CO about not being able to do her caches because of just this and her response was it sucks for you. Nice statement...
  24. Well, it was archived by CO, however I want to know how the McDonald's Frappe line was published by reviewer. That is blatant commercialism, unless it was mod-ded after it was published.
  25. I am normally a Fall, Winter cacher, but have recently found myself out of work. I tried for a few caches last weekend in a park that I cached in the winter, however was turned away because I was not a town resident. So my question is, if a cache is open to the general public during off peak season would that violate guidelines? I sent a note to reviewer earlier this week and have yet to receive a response, but wanted to know if other reviewers feel its okay or not. If not, then a majority of hides in the Eastern area of my locality would be in violation. Thanks for the responses in advance.
