  1. Great quote, but violating the rules of the game, is violating the rules. The cache owner should know that. You should be looking at the cache owner for not following the rules, not anyone else. Throwing stones at someone for letting someone know is stupid. To be frank, I don't believe a cacher should be policing from thousands of miles away, without searching for the cache. For example, here are some caches that are 360 miles away from me, give or take. You might recognize them, as they are yours (firennice). Durin - Dwarf - Middle Earth Cache - On 5/21/10 there was a report that the cache was muggled and a NM was files. A DNF was filed on 10/30/10 and it hasn't been found since. I could choose to file a NA on the cache thinking I'm being a good citizen. But for all I know, the cache is there and you just forgot to clear the NM attribute. There's no way I should file a NA. 4 Years of Geocaching - On 11/27/10 a cacher posted an NM on this cache stating the container was cracked. On 12/4 a cacher reported having to pour water out of the cache. The NM attribute has not been cleared and there is no notes from the owner that the cache was repaired. Should I post a NA because the CO isn't maintaining there cache? Of course not. I've never seen the cache and really don't know what is going on. Signage - This cache has two consecutive DNF's and hasn't been found since 10/8/10. A couple of find logs before that mentioned the cache has been vandalized and that the cache needs maintenance. The NM attribute has not been cleared and there are no CO notes about checking on the cache. Also, it could be argued that the cache description encourages cachers to park illegally. Why not file a NA? Because I haven't visited the cache site. For all I know everything is going along swimmingly. It wouldn't be the first time that the logs give a false impression. . Friends in Low Places - This cache had an NM filed on 11/25/10 after it hadn't been found since 10/20/09. The cache was disabled nearly two months later and has been disabled for over a month without the cache being checked. An armchair logger could say the owner isn't doing their job and file an NA. That would be a RUBBISH thing to do, IMO. For those who haven't caught on, the CO has placed 184 caches and I've cherry picked four examples and painted worst-case scenarios. The CO actually has a significant number of caches with multiple favorite votes and is obviously still actively involved in the game. My point is, cachers shouldn't be posting NA's on caches they've haven't gone after. Especially when there is not serious known problem with the cache. If they want to "clean up the game" they should visit caches in their own area. For example, the PQ I ran to pull the above information turned up 1000 caches with uncleared NM's within a 50-mile radius. Ecylram you are my hero! One shouldn't throw stones unless they are willing to deal with their own shortcomings. Unless,OP searched for the cache and came up DNF, then he/she/it shouldn't armchair police. So, is OP now going to arbitrarily go after every cache he/she/it declares NM or SBA? To OP: There are enough local caches for you to police. Stick to the area near you, that you can run other people off of. And if you are going to throw stones, don't be a hypocrite. Reading that you maintained a cache due to its importance and then posting a NA on something you have never visited and more than likely never will is short sighted, needless, and pretentious. This won't earn you a cacher of the year souvenier. Nor will it help you attain Antarctica reviewer status.
  2. this is a bit frightening, I have a few hikes, xc ski and ice climbing trips coming up in the next 3 weeks. Definite food for thought. I have forwarded to the group organizers. Anyone go up to Fahnestock? Doing the xc skiing this weekend.
  3. Was snowshoeing in Harriman on Saturday. There was a nice crust off the trails, which wasn't too bad. Suspect after the warm weather of the past 2 days that the crust may be a bit harder. Headed out to xc ski on Saturday, wondering what the trails will look like then
  4. No one said that. But in an area where a significant fraction of the population speaks Spanish (or French, or Klingon, or...), it makes sense to include that language in any labels that identify the cache. I was being sarcastic, due to the OP rubbing this Hispanic, non-gardener, the wrong way
  5. Wow, I must attest my ignorance, I had no idea that most muggles were Hispanic! By all means this is a great idea. I mean we certainly want all the Hispanics out there leaving our caches alone! *SARCASM* Of course, the sarcastic remarks are said, as a person of Hispanic origin. I find the initial post to be disconcerting and a bit offensive. Muggles come in all colors, shapes and sizes. And if you are finding your caches going missing because whilst in landscaping, it maybe because there was no permission granted? Or, if permission was granted, maybe finding out who the caretaker is and letting them in on the caches whereabouts. Now, if the post had said maybe we should have stickers to let those who speak Spanish know about this little game and welcome them to go to the website, I may be more prone to support the foreign language stickers.
  6. Guessing you have to get a cache on each continent? Good luck with Antarctica!
  7. I see where you are going with this, since I am a marketer myself. The idea is clever for a business (Don't think I haven't thought of it, in my 4 years of caching), however you will NEVER be able to list any type of commercial cache on this site. And as a new cacher, I will suggest that you may want to figure on listing your own caches before hyping the game as a marketing tool, so you know what you are actually doing. Good luck in your endeavors.
  8. I've taken a caching hiatus since the summer, but this something that may drag me out of it. Everything but the camp out interests me. Gonna have to research local lodging in the area, unless you can suggest good areas nearby for lodging. Note: I have slept in 2 Ice Hotels in Scandanavia in extreme cold before, so I KNOW I want a warm bed for this one! Lol.
  9. I don't really see your issues with it. It But I guess its a generational thing. Far more vulgarity out there in the world. Hello Kim Kardashian! What I find vulgar is the use of religion as swag in caches. That really gets my goat. Can I report all those too? What else can we report as offensive?
  10. Have you tried by exporting query to Google Earth or Gsak? I haven't tried to do that in a few years Good luck!
  11. +1 Unless the p & g takes me somewhere worth logging abt it's a TFTC I have micros hidden and I honestly don't mind if I get the TFTCs in the logs. I just hate the "." posts. Now, that's lazy! BTW I don't log anything in GSAk after I make finds, just head directly to GC.com, that seems a bit redundant
  12. Yuppers, The Spot Still has the original log book. I have a picture, but the website had been particularly ornery lately and isn't letting me upload them.
  13. The puzzles DO appear correctly, the FINAL coords will never appear on the map, since it must be solved to find the final coords. Don't fret, find another area nearby to place a cache. It'll make it an extra special placement!
  14. Just some quick, obvious question. Did your family member seek permission with the park when initially placing the cache? If so, did you mention that? Did you mention the building in between the cache and the school? Is placing the cache next to the public restroom a good idea since muggles will be going in and out all the time and may incite curiosity or even incite a bomb scare? Before getting heated, you need to take a step back and calm down. Especially since you are new to the game and it's rules. Take a chance to reflect and understand that the reviewers are not paid, they don't go and search every new cache GZ prior to publishing. (can you imagine finding every single of the over 1 million caches before it getting published? Probably not.) Read and understand the rules and regulations, read through the forums for (mostly) good advice, then complain if you feel it necessary. But until then try to understand all the nuances of how to properly place a cache and deal withnthe reviewers
  15. OMG. You. Are. So. Right. I love it! +1,000,000
  16. Very cool! Wonder how far I would get in my 4" heels. Cheers awesome accomplishment
  17. Not that I am aware of. Official Groundspeak merchandise can be found at REI but there aren't any located in NYC. You weren't thinking about placing a cache here while on vacation, if you were just a heads up that it's against guidelines. Have fun while here, it's a great visit
  18. I would check with the reviewer. If the bridge is not on any trail then it may look suspect. In the age of if you see something, say something it maybe best to err in the side of good judgment.
  19. I would rather a cache in the parking lot of an Adult bookstore than a port-a-potty anyday! Quite honestly, the adult bookstore really doesn't bother me. I am not very uptight about that sort of thing.
  20. I think Crag & Tail had some issues, there were a few DNFs when I was there. Edinburgh Castle was a good sized cache for a TB. Have fun! Edinburgh was a blast, oh and stop off at Oink for an insanely good pork sandwich on Victoria Street not too far from the cache
  21. I don't know how I feel about the purchasing a plot for a game until being "planted" there for eternity. Feeling its a little crass, but if my beloved were an avid geocacher I may ask for a space for a micro so cachers can come visit me and my beloved can "maintain" it when visiting me. Regarding cemeteries being a good waste of land, that was my thought a few years back. I, too want to be cremated, but its on religious grounds. Now, I realize that cemeteries are a source of greenbelts (and history). In large cities there would be more concrete and high rises about if not for the cemeteries. I live in Queens, NYC we are called the borough of cemeteries and as creepy as they are, I can still see the green and have a clear view to the skyscrapers of NYC from my apt. If it weren't there, I would be breathing in more smog and possibly not get the sunlight into my apartment as I do now.
  22. You guys rock!!!! Thank you! I am leaving NYC this afternoon so totally stoked to cache and sightsee for 1 week. If anyone wants any TBs to head over to NYC let me know; you can PM me. Someone mentioned a series "Lost Castle of the Fife" is this still around?
  23. I did that this past February courtesy of the IceHotel. They pick you up at the airport, issue you a thermal coverall and then you get on a dog sled and sled the 12 miles to the hotel on the River Torne. En route back to airport, you get on a snowmobile. Its a lot of fun, hella cold. I did something similar 5 years ago in the Finnish Lapland, its an interesting experience. But you have to be truly hardy to deal with that level of cold!
  24. Generally understood, yes, but sometimes posted anyway
  25. Hi, I am headed on a 1 week trip to Edinburgh on Friday. Just planned this late last week so am rushed to get everything together while working and prepping for my new job. this will primarily be in Edinburgh but I may take a day to see Glasgow via public transport and thinking of seeing if there is a coach tour of the highlands---dying to go to the distilleries of the Scotches I so love. Can anyone tell me of the "best" caches in terms of coolness, history, area, attraction? Any areas to avoid? And will there be a pub nearby? jk-well maybe not ;-)
