  1. If you have kids in tow and you still are not convinced that they are enough 'camoflage' make out as if they are collecting stuff for a school project. Look for something that is prolific in the area and get the kids to 'collect' some whilst searching. If you are searching vegetation, then combine it with a nature lesson, looking and identifying plants, bugs etc... Or take a bin bag and gloves and get your group to pick up the litter in the area, picking up litter makes you almost invisible.
  2. A quick Google search using 'how do i find the distance between two coordinates online' found this http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html Hope it helps
  3. Have you tried to add the geocache email address / domain to the 'Safe List' in hotmail?
  4. I have to agree, there are many different types of cache for many types of geocacher. Just because it's not conventional, doesn't make it wrong. I don't see the fun in playing the numbers game, so apart from one day doing a power trail in the US if I ever get there for a holiday, I think power trails don't meet the 'ethos' of the original game, but some people enjoy them so they should stay. Same with webcam caches, if people find enjoyment and it gets them off their butts and into the fresh air, then I say bring them back. If you don't agree then untick the webcam cache box on your PQs, then everyone is happy.
  5. Have you tried to reinstall the app, it might force the phone to redo the association between the cache and the app used to open the link.
  6. Hi-vis vest and hard hat from well know auction site, clip board and hey presto, invisibility kit...
  7. Folks, I love technology but should we just be adding QR codes to caches for the sake of using this technology? So far nobody has suggested any innovative uses for the code. Using it to open the app on your phone will save a couple of button presses. Using them to log your find is a bit limiting, we already see lots of TFTC logs, this would only encourage people to leave generic logs rather than a short note about the cache experience. Surely there is a more creative use we could find for the QR code. How about encoding a link to a website with more info about the area you are in, give the cache finder a richer experience when they find the cache. Use in puzzle caches to reveal clue answers via a web page. There are countless ways to get free web site space and tools to help make simple web pages. Use the QR code and associated web page to give the clue to the next stage in a multi or puzzle.
  8. I use an Android based HTC One X with great success. I find that walking at the area from two directions usually gives me a pretty close hit for the coordinates. Also remember that the satnav system is not that accurate. You will always have anywhere up to 2-4 meter margin of error on any device. The GPS or smart phone should be used to get you to the general area of the cache. From that point onwards you should deploy your Mk1 eyeball for the final search.
  9. Awesome and well done, keep it up.
  10. As I live in the UK, that chances that I ever come to find this cache are slim to none, but I still want to try to solve the puzzle. Except once I got past the first couple of helper puzzles I am stumped. I don't know if that is because I'm over analysing it, it's US-centric or I'm just having a dumb day. I've played several of these types of puzzles on the net before without getting stuck so early on. Might have to go sleep on it. Looking forward to virtually solving this one... Thanks for the puzzle
  11. When I was trying to solve a puzzle cache I stumbled upon this cache in my google searches, http://coord.info/GC25WQJ it has a great set of resources for teaching you about puzzle caches and how to solve them. Good luck
  12. I have 2 goals, to have fun caching and to do a 5/5 this year. I was toying with the idea of filling my D/T grid this year but I wonder if I put a requirement on myself, will that take some of the fun out of it for me?
  13. I have a hi-vis vest, bin bag and litter picker arm thingy in the car. If the area is very highly populated then I don my 'disguise' and away I go. Nobody pays attention to someone picking up litter, even if they are rummaging around. It also has the benefit of helping keep the area clean. If I was ever to get stopped and asked why I was picking up litter, I would just reply I was helping to keep the place clean or if someone official asked, explain about geocaching. If I'm grabbing a cache whilst in smart work clothes, on goes the hi-vis vest and out comes my clip board and pen. You can then pretend to be inspecting the area and making notes etc... Caching with kids is easier, let them do the looking, who really pays attention to kids playing? Next time you are out for a walk, keep an eye out for people you would normally ignore, see what they do and see if it could be used to disguise your searching.
  14. I think that is a good idea, it gives the other cachers a better idea of the suitability of a cache for their plans.
  15. You can catch previous years of the RI christmas lectures on their web site. They are the best part of christmas after the roast if you ask me... With regards to the quiz question, my guess is Rodin.
  16. It does make you look and take notice of the number of people who died. If the cache makes one person realise they drive dangerously and it saves a life then surely its a good thing. I still remember what my driving instructor told me, 'It's a speed limit, not a target.' You should see the tactful road signs in Australia, we saw a giant red one on a freeway saying 'DOZY DRIVERS DIE!'.
  17. people take kids caching, doesnt this teach younger kids to mess with potentially dangerous stuff. my vote is that its a poor choice for a container
  18. I found that my litter picker is great for me, not only can it be used as part of a disguise in urban, muggle heavy areas, It allows me to reach caches I would normally not be able to reach whilst recovering from my spinal injury. It cost less than a fiver on the popular auction site.
  19. How can you ban first to find? Once the cache has been published, someone has to be the first to find it.
  20. I'm not visually impared, just getting on a bit and quite depressed that I've just had to employ 'reading glasses' so having to squint at grey icons isn't improving my mood, LOL
  21. USB endoscope / light under $40 Hows this for high tech? Add that to your laptop / tablet and you have a really nice way of looking in hard to reach places. All we need is a bluetooth version that works with android...
  22. Flexible light for use with telescope mirror, just need to get a magnetic mirror, or better yet an electro-magnet that can be turned off/on as needed on your mirror. There is an idea for a project, combining a mirror / light / magnet onto a single device.
  23. As a newcomer to the game, I do wonder if people don't realise that the cache owners would like to hear more than a TFTC. I did a fair bit of reading when I started and wasn't sure what to log. I took my cue from other people's log entries. Now I know better, I try to write a few words about the find. The simple drive bys don't inspire long entries, but I try to write better logs with every cache I find, especially the ones I enjoy.
  24. I wonder if the GS lackeys reading about how much effort people are going to to undo the grey icons, will make them realise that maybe a rethink might be needed?
