  10. I think that there are a couple of cases that would indicate that an update should be filed with the NGS. 1. Where the description to the control has changed such that anyone without a GPSr would have a hard time locating it. This would include road changes and changes to area surrounding the control, especially landmarks called out in the description. 2. where a control has not been visited in a long, long time. Say, 30 years. 3. an obviously destroyed control. By obvious I mean one where you see the wreckage (based on the description)... a broken monument... a missing wall... whatever structure the control was supposed to be mounted on/in. Higher confidence should be given to Horz vs. Vert .. and a "No Find" does not constitute a "Destroyed" being my $.02 >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!

  14. 1. Return the bits to NGS, which I think our good friends at the Power Squad do..... or 2. Keep it as a nifty souvenir... keeping them is not unheard of.... or 3. Perform the standard viking ex-benchmark ritual over the original spot and bury the remains with the appropriate solemnities...or Some mixture of the above >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!

  18. You might want to check out SAWatch. http://www.huntting.com/sawatch/index.html Running SAWatch for 24 hrs at a fixed location gives real insights on the "wander" question >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  19. I took the laptop with me on the Great Az-Ut Loop and it died the second day out. I had it on the seat next to me. There was a problem (I think) with getting heat off the unit. Laptops get real hot on the bottom... and without something on the bottom to unload this heat, you are going to have problems. >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  20. The first thing I noticed when I got the 76 was the size. I have been using a eTrex and this unit jams nicely between the dash and the window.. but this trick functioned not with the 76s. I found the following at a local office store for $6... Humm.... I wonder if..... Ahhh... and "in situ" And it works fine... buttons are easy to get to and screen is highly readable >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number! 21. The datasheet says this is a "Vert" so you can't go off what your GPS tells you. The datasheet also gives a pretty good description and the area does not look like one that you might have a hard time locating the mark. The photo sure looks like an ex-benchmark. Any sign of the witness post? I think you might want to report this as destroyed. You have to ask yourself, "Is anyone going to come out looking for this again?" If yes, then an updated description is in order. IMHO >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  22. Consider the following you are not replacing a witness post, you are flagging. survey teams flag all the time... so they can find field marks. flagging tape is not made to last forever. a witness post is made to last longer than flagging tape. whatever you leave will not last as long as a witness post. Thus... IF you really feel that someone is going to be there withen the life span of flagging tape, then flag it... Othewise... an up-to-date description of how to get to the CP (that's "control point".. for those concerned with initials) is worth more than the flagging.. IMHO for some reason, I have recently developed a strange urge to pull over at flagging... >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  23. Hey! Don't it SNOW that far north? About Garmin engineers and Groundspeak... I gotta believe that they know of and watch these boards... If they do not... someone should drop the hint >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  24. It seems like a lot of posts on Groundspeak deal with the firware upgrades that Garmin keeps pumping out... How do you feel about these upgrades? >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00217% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
