  1. Any animal danger if doing this alone? Do any of you lone night cachers bring animal defense, and what kind? When I was young, my friends and I used to night hike in the White Mountains of NH. Most of the time we left the lights off and let our eyes adjust, unless it was a new moon. How do the experts cache, with headlamp always on, or just lighting the gpsr screen once in awhile?
  2. I know I shouldn't ever try to be funny, or be ridulously extreme just to make a point, as there is always someone who actually takes me seriously. The least I should do is remember to add the smilies  In fact, I just mentioned this in another thread http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...opic=136626&hl= All my fault tozain, and thanks for pointing out the terms. Many people don't ever click and read things like that, in the name of instant gratification, and they should. Let the record should that I would never, ever use any automated means to mine the data here, especially for cash. :| tozain, is that the correct "serious" face to use? I know there are some standards somewhere, and I should go find them and read them.
  3. So if I really was as cheap as I look, I could pay for only one month and spend it downloading all the member only caches, in order of proximity? Cool, but I want to know if there is any cheaper way. Can a group buy a 1 month membership? I shouldn't do that, occasionally someone comes along and takes me seriously. Its' happened more than once.
  4. If you have the skills, I urge you to write a script that will log *every* cache as a find. If you don't, I would be willing to do it for a little cash. It might take some time for it to get every last one, in fact, for all I know it may never actually catch up. What would be the point you ask? Exactly.
  5. GC7D has been adopted. Long live the cache! I know cachers love stats, so I thought up a new "score": for all the caches you've found, sum the ages (in days) from the hide date to the found date.
  6. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...a3-e732fb02ff0c GC7D. Tha's right, 7D !! This is the second oldest cache in Massachusetts. It might be fun to find out how old it ranks overall. In any case, I adopted it from its' originator, woh was from Penn and had set it up while on a business trip. But hey, that was back before there *were* any rules. It would be nice for some great Mass cacher to adopt this. Is WaldenRun still out there doing his thing? Or maybe the owner of First Mass Cache would like to start an "oldest" collection? Wow, it missed this guys oldest-100 list by 3, making it 103. http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&start=1&q=h...kpublic/&e=9797 Subtracting the archived ones from that list, that puts it at 51 oldest, active cache in the WORLD. Hmmm, maybe I should be selling this one on ebay.... or maybe I'm just getting carried away Well at least tell me how great I am for taking such good care of it for lo, these many years ) LOL But wait, this guy had it at 125 back in 2001. Heh, oh well, its' pretty darn old. http://www.acme.com/jef/geocaching/oldest.html
  7. Perhaps also worthy of note (forgive me if any have already been mentioned). These are compiled quickly from a search on sf.net and freshmeat: http://www.mgix.com/gps3d/ http://opencast.mine.nu/mod.php?mod=userpa...=2204&page_id=4 http://www.gpsdrive.cc/index.shtml http://gpsmap.sourceforge.net/ http://qpegps.sourceforge.net/ http://eps.sourceforge.net/ http://gpstrans.sourceforge.net/ http://javagps.sourceforge.net/ http://roadmap.saignon.net/
  8. Note that Java and JavaScript are completely different things, other than the first 4 letters of their unfortunate names. In netscape, the "Temporary Files" folder is called a "cache", which is what everyone other than MS calls it. I was just compiling a list of the best open source programs for windows, so I can create a CD as a cache item. Lots to choose from, but it has to install/run on windows and be of general end-user use. mozilla and openoffice are obvious, but there are lots of other cool programs too: gimp, gaim, some games. Any suggestions?
  9. Don't tell me, it's a move against external things like keenpeople.com and the texasgeocaching.com selector thingie.? A real shame if it is.
  10. Nope, still doesn't work. Oh well. I couldn't get an avatar up either.
  11. nvm [This message was edited by Pluckers on October 15, 2003 at 08:30 AM.]
  12. Note that the texascaching selector tool includes parking coords. I emailed them asking that the tool generate links to mapquest and/or topozone and they responded that they liked the idea and would maybe be doing that soon.
  13. opt-out has always existed: just don't log the finds. If you want to tell the cache owner something, email them via gc.com and don't include your email address. So in a sense, the stats were never accurate, as far as we know. Who knows how many people were doing the above? Can old-timers please comment on the number of paper logs that never get posted online?
  14. quote:Originally posted by mckee: quote:Originally posted by Marky:You miss my point. The placement of the "stealth" cache has not been approved by the approvers as safe and appropriate. This is an important thing as this sport grows. I only used moving caches as an example because they are no longer allowed and the reasons that they aren't allowed are similar to the reasons why "stealth" caches wouldn't be allowed. ...which puts the "pirate" part back in. The idea was to find a way for someone who wants to "pirate" to find a way that does not raid/vandalize/destroy another person's property (their cache). I'm only suggesting a way to do it that would not destroy another person's property. -------------------- Searching for the lost, Geocache....... Way to go! Let's see if we can come up with some more creative ideas for people that want to break the rules. I haven't seen cache graffitti yet. Trying to be "open minded" and see your point: so someone likes geocaching enough to want to do a hide, but doesn't like gc.com or it's approval process, so they piggyback off an existing, approved cache. I think that gc.com would say to use some other means of promoting your cache altogether, wouldn't they? I can see gc.com approving "extension" caches where they have the neccesary information to approve it, but the information to find it would be retrieved from other (approved) caches. But again, we're not talking about piracy anymore, are we?
  15. Oh wait, better idea, at least for a hammie with the ability to construct such a thing: Waypoint 1 brings you to a spot within range of an FM transmitter that is always broadcasting the waypoint 2 coords, in morse code! You need 3 things: -a normal cache setup for #2 -the fm transmitter/morse code generator setup -a cool place to put #1, probably not your front yard.
  16. The battery problem can be eliminated if the seekers are instructed to supply it themselves. The trick is getting the power from the place where the seekers plug it in, to the hidden cache. Getting to the plug-in site would be the GPS part of the hunt. Can a lantern battery effectively power a small FM transmitter 100 yards away with a buried cable? Another question: how easily would it be to make something common like an fm walkman at least minimally directional? To make this workable, you need to construct/buy a small FM transmitter/ping device, buy 100 yards of transmitting cable, setup a plug-in site, bury/hide the cable for 100 yards (staying within the rules of gc.com, meaning it would probably have to be private land with permission), and post the cache page with instructions for making fm walkman's and such directional. Oh, and accept the risk of it all being plundered

  18. I changed my location in MyPop->profile, but when I post the old location still shows up. Bug?
  19. quote:Originally posted by Marky:Moving caches are no longer allowed because it is too hard to verify that a particular placement is safe and legal (or appropriate). Reference please? This seems logical and a real killer of the "pirate" concept, at least on gc.com. Even beyond gc.com, non-approval from someone who represents the sport as well as gc.com seems like a real disservice to the sport in general. But I guess if you really are trying to do more harm in the world than good... If I do a keyword search on "moving", I get 43 hits, many of which look to be moving caches. Should they be archived?
  20. But wait, what if a pirate plunders a cache, and then using the contents of that cache, find a cure for cancer and develop a method for room-temperature fusion? Come on now, have an open mind. If you have permission, it's not only unlikely to happen, but also not piracy. If you don't have approval from gc.com, then it shouldn't be associated with a gc.com cache. You are always welcome to set up a cache any way you want (within the law) and publicize it anyway you can get away with. If you stretch the pirate concept far enough, it becomes non-piracy. E.g. What if a "pirate" visits lots of caches, taking only one item and leaving one "pirate treasure" (of equal or greater value) in each, and then hides all the "ill gotten booty" in a gc.com approved cache, isn't that ok? Oh yeah, and then to be really bad, you have to have the pictures of the loot posted on p*c*.com and talk like a pirate. Cute eh?
  21. I can't imagine what you are going through, although we have been through some pretty tramatic stuff with our 15yo dgtr. Our prayers are with you. So cachers, is there any opportunity to develop an amber alert system for ourselves? How can we help? Can users opt-in to a system where they get an email message if they are within a certain area? Would it be any help if all those cachers were called to go caching for a good cause, bringing along photos/information and other helpful tools (cell phone, digital camera etc...)? Think about it, a map of coverage could be developed from the logs, especially if timestamps were included. Just trying to start a brainstorming session here.

  23. Secretly, Jeremy has been running piratecaching.com and cross-referencing IP addresses of people that send him pictures with posts on this site. Pretty clever eh? OK, just kidding, but it would be funny!
  24. You're kidding me! My 13yo lost interest in potty humor a long time ago. quote:Originally posted by phantom4099:Looks like something a 13 year old would write Wyatt W. The probability of someone watching you is directly proportional to the stupidity of your actions.
  25. How can this be an issue? There are no stats, remember? Who cares if someone logs a find online when they haven't found it in reality?
