I'm also POSITVE..people in EVERY group do stupid crap like this,as evidenced by some of the other posts to this thread. R-Toe- you wanna make a difference in that area, look up some of the outdoors/hunting sites that people in your/that area use and flame the hell outta that behavior. also try contacting your local game wardens, and perhaps try the Isaak walton league for your area. another group that would be MOST willing to help you would be the REAL hunters in your area, I know I've reported this type of thing on more than one occasion. http://www.iwla.org/
  2. UMC, this topic is one I know well. first off,if ice fishing is your primary reason for a 4 wheeler,DONT do it,get a snowmobile. I bought a Kawi. Bayou 300,10 years ago for just that reason, most of my friends also have various models that we all use for icein' and hunting. Problem with 4 wheelers and ice fishing is 1- they only work in say 8" of snow or less, here in northern WI. thats normally is only a month or so,then your digging or pushing alot. 2- slush on the ice, also common here at times and on certain lakes, wreaks havoc on ANY moving parts, brakes, axles, foot levers, brake cables, chains, ect, 3- the cold kills those little batterys unless your religious about keeping them charged. 4- starting them can be a problem on the real cold days. That said, keep in mind that I fish pretty much every weekend, often We stay on the ice all weekend in the shanty. If You fish inland lakes a sleds the way to go,if You mainly fish Great Lakes bays and HUGE bodies of water ,then often the snow doesnt stick to the ice and what bit of it that does crusts over hard enough to use a 4 wheeler 95% of the year, then a 4 wheelr is better for getting around, chains help a ton also. Brands?, well heres where your gonna run into lots of opinions. personally I've seen nothing but problems with polaris, maybe they've worked out some of the bugs but the 2 of them that I see used on a regular basis are junk, plus the belt idea SUX for hills. suzuki makes a real nice machine, I love My kawi, but I know they had some issues a year or two ago. honda ,from what I've seen is the best all around machine. Models? well thats a decisionYou need to make depending on what you really want to use it for.but I do know BIGGER is not usually better. burried in the mud or snow? try lifting one of those monsters out by your self! going cross country in the woods?smaller machines have a much smaller turning radius. some of the bigger models barely fit(or dont) in the back of a pick-up. Did I miss any thing? to be honest,if I was to buy another I'd probaly get a 2 wheel drive.
  3. Not familiar with your Model of GPSr, however all the garmins I've played with have a place on the waypoint page(single waypoint screen) to add a comment or reference remark. what I usually do is just print out a handfull of sheets for the caches in my area that I plan on visiting and thow'em in my fanny pack.then as I get done with one I will leave printout from one I just visited in the next one for the next person to use if they need/want it.
  4. As another Hunter, I wouldnt hesitate to recomend the Garmin GPS 12,simple,accurate,DURABLE,good reception in the wood or out, long battery life. I started out using the 12 for hunting and never regretted it. cant say much about Maggies, never played with one for more than a couple seconds in the store. think you could pick one up for around 120 bucks online if you looked around.
  5. KacheKrew- are you disapointed in the fact that it doesnt have every street on it or the fact that it doesnt show you right on the street all the time? If your looking for more street level detail ,I would recomend Mapsource Roads & Recreation. I have that and it provides 99% of the local streets and roads out in the boonies, Its older maps though so it doesnt have some newer street and highway upgrades but its pretty good.you might also wanna search the forums for info about mapsource metro guide if your looking larger city maps. topo I doent know. If your not happy with the not on the road part,well.......sorry,cant help you there.
  6. Alan is right on about compitition, in the strickly commercial sense,HOWEVER, if you have caches loged on BOTH sites and someone take my TB and puts it into one of the "other" caches then it gets in there system...how does that help me track a bug?could this be how some bugs go AWOL? in all honesty ,the more caches the better as far as I am concerned, but I definatley see some issues about 2 or more site listing the same cache ever notice someone signing your log book at the cache but not on the site?
  7. today while out in my boat ,I had WAAS enanled on My MAP76S, trolling along playing with the new BlueCharts I recently purchased, for about 2 hours all's well, when all of a sudden I look at the map screen and see I'm way off from where I should be,look at accuracy ,145FT!! after being locked at 10-20 all day. wondering WTF, I turn WAAS off,BOOM back down to 10ft accuracy, map slides back in place to where I know I'm physically at. OK...go along for a while turn WAAS back on...after 30 minutes,it starts drifting again,I mean I'm watching the accuracy degrade at a good rate. anyone else seen this happen before?
  8. UMC,Did you check the battery mode? as mention above and below here? quote:Originally posted by cat-n-the-hat:Just a thought do you have it in battery saver mode. My came out of the box that way. I quickly turned that feature off after reading posts about how it can affect sat lock under trees. Since the unit only updates every 3-5 seconds instead of every second. cat-n-the-hat
  9. OK, heres M2 cents worth, NOT having played around with any of the Magi's, I dont know how well they work,I had scroled around on a freinds older unit(7-8 years old?) and was lost in all the menus in a heartbeat, dont know if the new units are more user freindly or not,but if they work as well as PPL here have been saying, they bear serious consideration. I have a GPS76S,I've used it for about a month and a half now,and am VERY happy.the basemap loaded in it has been pretty accurate, its off on some of the newer roads but mostly correct(same with Mapsource R&R).I also use it mainly boating,it floats (yes I tested it ),its as waterproof as any of the others out there, and the Mapsource Bluecharts are killer. As for reception,I've taken it on several cache hunts and walks to hunting areas, and never had a problem HOLDING a signal under 2 story northern forests(Wis.-oaks,maples,pines) or in hilly areas,Idid see it struggle in a 60 ft. deep 100 ft wide ravine when I was tight to the rock wall, but it didnt stop workingand once I got in the ceenter it lock right back up tight. Aquiring a signal under pretty dense cover took it a little longer(2 minutes) but I had also moved 150 miles since the last use. The memory seems more than ample to Me, I loaded ALL of Wis. ,Minneapolis metro area, the northern 1/3 of Min, and the U.P. of Mich. and had some extra room.(from Mapsource R&R). right now I have all the charts for Lake Michigan loaded with LOTS of extra room. The user interface for all Garmin units I've owned (gps 45&gps 12) and the units I've looked at(etrex,V,&gps76) seems simple to use ,easy to learn, and simalar(sp?). If I had it to do over I'm not sure I'd get the 76S,I think for the 175$,the compass, baro. &extra memory werent really needed. I mean brunton compass10$,baro? what use? the extra memory?, well this was the kicker for Me ,but now that I've used the Mapsource, the 8Meg would have suited my use. also wish I would have shopped around,I bought from a chain store locally and got ripped bad. over all on a 1-10 scale..GPSmap 76S= 8 PS-after reading your originalpost again,Anttena?-I had an old GPS45 that had a swivel ant, like the V,BAD idea in my opinion,WAY to fragile for and rugged use

  11. Datum hit it right on the head. however smaller puff balls are better eating, NOTHING compares to morel mushrooms though. SHROOM ON! PS--you DONT want to breathe in the "spore clouds" from puffballs, and its bad for dogs to. I dont remember the name of the disease at the moment, but I had a friend lose 3 dogs to it ,,then he sold his house and moved away from the river that had puffers all over in its flood plain.

  13. I just bought Mapsource Bluechart CD Rom from TVNAV.COM, they said 5 days I had it in four,110$ compared to 125$ at the next cheapest place, the person I spoke to seemed very freindly and asked all the right questions to ensure that I got what I wanted. now I just gotta get my boat out this weekend and play around on Lake Michigan/Green Bay. the maps I loaded look KILLER! 2 THUMBS UP, for TVNAV.com.

  15. Just a reminder to all you NON hunting folks out there-wisconsin's bow hunting has begun as well as small game hunting(ALONG WITH MOST OF THE UPPER MIDWEST STATES),as a hunter I'd recommend bright colored clothing or the lovely blaze orange if you wish, also to keep from ruining somones hunt,if out in the boonies, keep an eye UP in trees and alert to possible hunters in the area
  16. Zobo- Do YOU think you need maps? I go to lake of the woods every year, I used a garmin GPS 12 for the last 5 years and had no problems, but I have paper maps to find my way around also, on that lake ,like the BW, you HAD BEST know where you are! this year I bought a garmin GPS76S, the maps are nice for local use, road/city nav ,and good on inland lakes, but lacked the detail I need on LOTW,HOWEVER, you can also by fishing hotspots maps(cd's)and blue charts that you can load into your gps at will. you can change them as often and however you want,NICE extra! for now garmin does not have a LOTW bluechart, but I think the boundy waters are on the lake superior chart set,and those maps are as good as paper nav charts. somthing to think about?!!
  17. I always like these kinds of threads on boards. I'm 32 (gotta quit counting those dang birthdays pretty soon)and the grizzly old chessie <---[The Face)that does caches with me is 10 now, he's been diabetic for 5 years now and is retired from his duck hunting days, I'm a flexo pressman[printer to you lay folks)and musky fishing addict that caches on the side.

  19. Geo Nav Dude, whats your take on the blue charts? I live in Green Bay ,and am thinking about getting the charts for the bay and Lk.Michigan. Also I have been pressing Garmin about a blue chart for Lake of the Woods on the Min. Canada border(million acres,14500 islands)the said to either by the fishing hot spots CD ,which is a joke, or the wait and see.

  21. I have a 76S and like it so far(only had it 3 weeks), If you know GPS and are looking for a better than average this is a good unit,if your new to all this I say the garmin 12Map, a real good beginner unit that will keep you happy and last through some abuse. as for waterproof, I think most units are the same ,the standard is OK to 12 feet for 30 minutes,I think?
  22. For the money..I'd say a GPS 12Map(garmin) I've only used garmin stuff any amount;had a GPS45 when they first hit the market loved it,easy to use worked good never a problem,TILL the ant. broke, buy that time the next generation of units was out,and I got a GPS 12,easy to use, good price,no problems,WAY better reception than the 45,I was in love!used it for 4 years now, still works great. I've compared the 12 to some of my freinds magellan's and an eagle(lowrance?), and find the 12 MUCH simpler to use and 95% as accurate, for 1/2 the price. Now that the next level of units has come out,I convinced myself I NEEDED (really didnt ) another nicer unit,I got a GPS76S,had it for 3 weeks now so far so good, theres ALOT more stuff on it,accuracy is a bit better than my 12,and still fairly simple to use. Knowing all this, if I had it all to do over againand was looking for my FIRST unit,it would be a 12Map, no doubt about it,the ease and ability of a 12 with a map?,,not much more you really need.
