  1. Sounds great. I was going to visit Svalbard late in July, but why not to adjust the plans a little. Hope to attend. Amazing.
  2. DE stands for Germany, not Denmark.
  3. I am planning a trip to Balkans in a few weeks and will most likely be riding past this cache. The cache description reads: 'The cache was left on holidays. It's a 35mm film box and a local cacher kindly assisted to help with maintenance on this cache'. But at the same time CO has a log entry that is openly asking other seekers to maintain his cache: The cache is seemingly inactive now, but I don't think I am going to help with restoring it. Or should I?
  4. Me too, I want that feature.
  5. And here is my log entry. I picked my bicycle from the factory, my wife loved it so next year we came together to pick her's so I had to find that cache. I made friends with a few people at the factory as well. Eugene is really nice to ride a bike, too. Small world. Back on topic. I think I'll install a flag counter to my trackable bicycle page some day.
  6. Just because it is too far away to return. I've run into some pretty hikes while failing to sign the log in the end due to lack of time, patience or my plain geoblindness. I would happily award them with an FP. Doesn't GS suggest the same:
  7. Well, basically it is a DUI issue, silly speed limit set by government in densely populated areas and overall motorist attitude toward cycling audience. Bicycling is often treated as a recreational only activity, you are forced to use sidewalks even when it is not practical. It is unlikely you get things thrown at you though. Try to stay as stealth as possible while camping, avoid scenic lake shores and other potential local picnic places in warm season. Latvia is pretty much the same, Estonians are shifted a bit more toward Scandinavian driving habits. I am not saying it is too dangerous to cycle here, you'll just find it not as relaxing as cycling in Norway.
  8. Amazingly, no (unless I missed an entry or two reading the whole log file in a hurry). As far as I understand it is one of the best spots in the location. The cache is active most of the time and keeps entertaining geovisitors. I doubt if I ever visited this garden if there was no geocache planted there.
  9. That one is a very special cache. With nearly 1000 finds in four years it has been maintained a couple of dozen times both by CO and other cachers. Did you notice your container survived a couple of weeks? I logged my find after replacing a missing container there too. A few weeks later I found a new box placed by another geocacher. I even happened to pick a trackable so I feel pretty much OK about having logged it as a find. BTW the cache is currently missing, but it won't be long before you see someone's "placed a new container" log.
  10. I don't care how other cachers move to their caches, myself I prefer a bicycle. Within the five year of caching history I changed four bicycles. Out of nearly 1.5K finds about a dozen were found while using a car: few in Ireland while my brother was showing me the countryside and a few more in Qatari desert whilst a geocaching buddy had me in his 4x4. I either hiked, used public transport or biked to the rest of my found caches. I am 48 and never owned a car since I never really needed it. I live in a compact city and my commute is only 20km RT so I do it year round. Ice is no problem since the invention of studded tires, rain and cold is no problem as long as appropriate apparel does the business. But it is so much fun to go out caching on a bike. There were times caches weren't densely populated in Lithuania, it took me to cover 400km+ in 20hours to log a single DNF a few years ago. My latest bicycle is foldable so I take it with me to most places I travel. It now has 58 flights, I rode it in 40+ countries so far. Lithuania as my home country is by far not the safest and most relaxed country to cycle in as most of Europe (except Scandinavia). I found US drivers pretty polite on roads, much better than in most parts of Europe. SE Asia is good once you get used to their traffic. Middle East is tough, but doable. Cycling is fun and I try to combine it with another hobby of mine: ham radio. Happy trails! Locals trying my travel bike in Qatar: Me and my transport in Red Square, Moscow:
  11. Ditto. I like the 'hid it better' logs the most. After continually selecting a 'better spot' by fellow seekers you end up spending an hour trying to find your own cache. To be honest I gave up once after running out of patience, but I left the online listing running and it keeps receiving smilies. I'm sure I'll find my own cache when I have more time and will add a few feet of fishing line. Cool idea.
  12. Had it in my PQ last month. Unfortunately we skipped it as we had to make Negombo to Trincomalee in three days on loaded foldable bicycles (mine is trackable TB2B3ZR). The roads were fine after Habarana and I was seriously thinking to detour toward Ritigala. My better half wasn't in her best shape though so luckily we did not go there since another road construction followed Kantale to Trincomalee and that last day presented us with 140 kilometer overall trip involving quite a bit of night riding on remote roads. We got robbed in Batticaloa a week later btw. Caching was not our primary interest though. DNF'ed Bounakabaha Buddhist Temple at Westminster Abbey few days later on the way Ampara to Pottuvil. That cache was planted over a year ago and unattempted ever since. A monk was supposed to keep the container, but there was different monk who only shrugged his shoulders after we tried to explain the game. No time to take a tour up the hill. There is another unattempted cache on top of Govindahela Mountain. Next time. Beautiful country though.
  13. Hep B and C viruses will survive in dried blood for several days if other conditions are right I guess. So better get yourself vaccinated prior you hit the trail BYOPless.
  14. I like this attitude and thanks for the smart idea. I would consider offering a small gift for the 15th to find so that it can still be qualified as an FTF Prize.
  15. Hello MrsB, I still have some of my wooden coins, just gotta find them. Would be happy to mail you one. Unlike New South Wales the Old one is in the neck of my woods so it won't be long before you get it. PM me your address if that's OK.
  16. Some people treat their sig items as non-tradable and they want their tokens to stay within the cache. I saw some with "leave where found" or "don't move" on the back side. I gave up placing my wooden coins a while ago, but I'd be honored if someone picked them for a collection album.
  17. Cool. Thanks a bunch. I don't think I can view someone else's DNF list though.
  18. I second Crow-T-Robot here and I don't delete my own DNF logs. I always log DNF if attempted unsuccessfully. Is there an easy way to generate the list of caches that you DNF'd years ago? It is sometimes fun to go back and see how well others did. I wouldn't mind if the profile cache section hosted DNF cache list for the user somewhere below "Geocaches Found".
  19. Lithuania is in there too. I loved the bicycle part of your nick and profile. The vast majority of my finds is while cycling. I now ride a foldable Bike Friday.
  20. I would guess there are no regulations in Belarus that ban geocaching or possessing and using a GPS receiver. The lack of information causes the country be pretty geodeserted. I also think tech guys have their own gps oriented game so they simply don't stick with the geocaching.com. The number of hides is slightly increasing in Belarus though. I too own a couple of caches there. Latvians and Lithuanians have well organized local communities of geocachers who share ideas on local forums. The game gets a lot of attention in the mass media lately so with gps equipment getting cheaper new geocachers are emerging everyday there. Also, there is a sizable percentage of hams among Lithuanian geocachers, you know what I mean.
  21. You may also want to try www.tb-rescue.com
  22. My post in Lithuanian geoforum re NGO hasn't generated a single reply. I am a little too busy lately trying to keep my head above the water with basically no time left for geocaching. Wait until it gets significantly warmer.
  23. That makes sence. I'll echo this to our local geoforum in Lithuania.
  24. What is a purpose of NGO within the project frame? Do you need it to sponsor the seminar? I don't think I get the point here. Even though the terrain doesn't seem very friendly Struve Arc LV would be fun to do. Sounds like a nice bike vacation route. Adding English description will definitely make it a little more attractive to some.
