  1. I have had the same problem for the past few days. I think I noticed it Sunday when I tried to add my field notes. I have windows 8 & use explorer. I do have quite a few field notes. Probably 3 months worth. Was about to knock some of them out Sunday logging, but this happened instead. The problem only appears when I'm trying to get onto the Field Notes. Nowhere else. It happens no matter what computer I'm on & whatever wifi Im using. Its some how associated with my account as I know others who do not have this problem with their field notes. (Course they don't have 3 months of field notes either). Sooo Im hoping groundspeake can get fixed so I can go ahead & log my finds. I'd hate to lose them. I hope some one is looking at the problem at Groundspeak. They need to know now that I see it is happing to other members (including premium) too. Cache on. obh
  2. I've noticed that Cracker Barrels seem to get a lot of caches. So on one of my last trips we decided to stop there & eat. I just decided to look in some of the most obvious places. Mind you I had no idea if a cache was there or not & had no GPS anyway, so decided to look while waiting to be called to sit down & eat. The first place I looked "I'll be doggone" I found one! What a cool little surprize. Smiled the rest of the eway home due to that. Just a nice little surprize!
  3. Has any body heard if Magellan is going to have their Geocaching event this summer? I checked on their web site & the wording they use tends to make me feel they may not be. I'd thought they'd make an announcement by now if they were. I've tried two out of the three years & both times it was a real hoot. Anybody heard? Thanks
  4. I've taken GPS whenever I've flown. I was always one to look out the window & say Gee! I wonder what that river or town is. Now I can know. Interestingly, you cant actually see whats directly below you for a couple of horizontal miles at 35,000 feet so you've still got to guess somewhat. I usually can't get good recption unless its right next to the window. Usually solve that by getting a pillow or blanket & put it on the arm rest next to the window & I don't have to hold it. When the plane turns you may lose signal until you find another satellite. Was once asked by stewardess what I had. Explained it was a GPS & she seemed satisfied. I generally keep it low profile though.
  5. I'm about to change ISP & will have a new e-mail address. Can I keep my nickname & my cache finds in GC.com? What do I need to do? Thanks
  6. Some folks geocache, but don't own a working computer. Get the co-ords at work then go find cache. If they don't have computer cant log they feel no reason to log on paper log. Guess its just the fun of the hunt & don't realize the feedback to the owner & other caches fun for them too. I'm completely opposite, love to log & read all the logs both before & after I visited. Fun to see people have the same experences I did. Love to weave a story in my logs out of the events that occured if I can. I even go back & reread my own logs if it was a really good experience. Brings smile sometimes at the memory. I never wrote on the bathroom walls when I was a kid, and now I guess I'm making up for it in a more positive fashion as an adult. KilRoy was here!
  7. Being FTF didn't use to be all that big a deal. However, with more folks begining to geocache there can be a great deal of competition. Basically, to be FTF it comes down to this - you have to know the cache is availible & you have the free time & scheduelling to go after it. Alot of retires geocache & folks who work at night & cache during the day. Tough to beat them if you have a breadwinner job for your family! Persistance is the key. If you go after them hard when you can then eventually you'll get one. Usually have to be up early or out late! For your info had 6 FTF's in one day last week. Tough not to as new cacher put out 7 new caches at same time in one small area 35 miles away. In this situation if you get there first for one you'll probably get them all. Also, a long way to have to drive back again in order to let someone else be first. I did feel a little guilty as it seemed too easy & even left one cache unfound 'cause I didn't want the efforts of any other locals who might be following to be totally skunked. Also wanted to give the competition a reason to keep going & try again next time. But guess what? When I checked the logs later that evening there were 4 others sets of cachers hot on my heels & all out trying to be FTF. Don't worry they will get their's too. Can't do that to often. I really think our locals all get a kick knowing each of us are trying to out do the others. Would suggest you just join in & if you don't beat them put in your log that you were hot on their heels. You'll probably make some friends.
  8. Frankly, the allowance of an unapproved cache as a find as suggested by the administration of a cache that was not allowed by that same administration reeks of misuse of authority by the said administration & possible cronyism. For the finder I can see his point as he did find the cache, but I believe those in administration need to be held to a higher standard & the last thing they should do is to offer to make this a find! Just makes me believe certain administrators are making up the rules as they go! It also makes one who has had his/her caches turned down realise the willy-nilliness of the administrator/approver decisions based on his own whims. Thanks.
  9. I had a good experience with my first cache that I put out. I really screwed up somthing or another & it was brought to the attention in the log. I just emailed Logger told him I would fix the probem & asked if he would change his log about this detail. The reply was fast & friendly. He did, I did, & it was done. Actually I was just happy somebody came & I didn't want to scare anybody else off. I do believe that the cache owners has final say, so if you want to keep your log on the cache best to follow the owner's rules. Owners if you don't like what you read let them know give them a set period of time & delete if needed while sending an e-mail why it was deleted. They'll be back.
  10. Oh yea, you'll have no problem making way points, & leaving breadcrumbs, folowing your progress. You just won't have a real detailed map. You willl have an outline of the country.
  11. I was in Costa Rica in September 02. My business traveling companion had a Garmin Vista & I had a Magellan Sport Trac map. Niether of us had the specific software for this part of the world. Surprizingly, though the garmin had quite a few roads in the country & also several towns. Of course they were the most major roads. I had nothing on my Maggellan but a few cities. You will find out if you get outside San Jose that it may take 2 hours to go 60 miles! Didn't get to cache, but almost did at the Mt Poas cache. Weather too bad that time of year (rainy season). Have fun!
