Looking For Geodogs With Their Own Accounts
Team Gryarvold replied to Earthdog Patrick's topic in General geocaching topics
I am the major part of Team Gryarvold, my name is Hermes. The guys and dolls go with me once in awhile if it's not to hot, but my human drivers better leave not with out me or I throw a fit. I don't care if all we are doing is hunting micros, I can still stick my head out the window and let the wind play in my ears. -
I always try to write something that was signif to that cache that happened while finding, whether it was a little lizard that watched us, or the friendly dog that came say hello, or getting lost on the way back out, or gee we thought that was the wrong light pole. Something that tells the owner that his/her efforts for hiding that cache were appreciated and we had fun finding it. In return I wish people would do the same to ours. It makes so more much fun to read how cachers days went and whether it rained cats and dogs or they sweltered while seeking, or what they thought of the hide spot, who found, the kids or parents, or things that are wrong with it that need changing or fixing. We always open the logs that we have received with anticipation and when there is nothing there but tftc it's a major let down.

I like the way the page looks. Are the green colors going to remain the same to represent earth colors? Do the representatives for each state cache do their own page using this template or is there going to be a web person to do it? -
Lucky for me I am not allergic to it, that or Poison Oak. Being originally from Oregon I did have a bad case of Oak one time, and only one time. I was really stupid one day when I was still in high school, my senior year. I was clearing p. oak away from a tree in our yard, it was a very hot day and I was sweating something fierce and wiping my face with my glove. So guess where the rash hit? And I had to go to school the next day with it like that. I kept wet paper towels on my face all day just for relief. And the next day it was almost gone. Quickly gone but man it told me it was there. Otherwise I can do caching all day in oak or ivy and never get an itch. My husband on the other hand is the exact opposite. If he even looks at ivy he gets a rash.

I wouldn't mind having different colors for each state. I was having trouble doing a red/white/blue without being too bright. I'm not sure what colors to use though.. I wouldn't want to pick college colors because that doesn't really represent the state, just one college. Might especially be bad if a cache was hidden near the rival school I'll have a look at the state flags, maybe we can pull colors from those as well as use them as graphics somehow. Good thinking all Edit: ugh, state flags aren't terribly lovely - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states No the state flags really weren't designed or chosen for beauty in mind, Arizona beeing the exception, I don't think. I think if we go with the state colleges there shouldn't be a problem i.e. Wasington State, Oregon State and the rest. Although some colors will be repeated. -

What colors are we going to choose from? Maybe we could go with the college colors i.e. Louisiana is Purple and Gold. Or are we going to have them all the same colors? -

Thank you I was so confused. Sometimes it's not the easiest thing to do following the conversation on here. -

Can someone please explain to me in laymans terms about the coordinate math chatter that is going on for this plan? I am curious as to how that is going to help us in placing our cache in the area that we are supposed to choose to represent this series. I have a tentative location already in mind that would be great and need to know if I get to choose the location or the math cords do. Just really confused at this point, so please help. Also for alot of states placing a large cache in an area like say the Alamo, or at the state capitol building where there is alot of foot traffic, muggles and lack of cover for hiding is maybe not a great idea. There are chances that it be mistaken for a bomb or taken completely just the for heck of it. It seems to me that it would be better to place them in an area this is still representative of the state but not really in the main stream of things, or sort of off the beaten track some in smaller towns and still be accessible to the average joe or jane. -

After all the work going into this with the hope that everyone gets to have a bit fun and travel, I would hate to think that someone will cheat and ruin it or nullify it completely. -
I just hope they know that we think they do a great job. And with all the caches that getting put out by people now the work load is tremendous. And they have lives outside of the computer just like the rest of us. It's just too bad that with all the cachers that have been around for a number of years that there can't be a few more reviewers on board.

Sounds like it is coming along nicely. What you have done up so far gets our vote. Just let us know when you want us to place the cache. -
What Kind Of Vehicle Do You Drive While Geocaching
Team Gryarvold replied to uncleboogie's topic in General geocaching topics
We use our handy dandy Durango that just got us out of a pickle today after a big rainstorm made the dirt road to the cache a muddy quagmire on a 45-60 degree hill. It also holds our 230 pound mastiff who has to go along caching with us or has a fit. Wouldn't be with out that vehicle. -
Does your hotsync manager come up when you hotsync? Is it is in your system tray? Does palm quick install open when you export from gsak? I got a palmvllx off ebay bought the serial/usb cable and it works great. But I did have to make sure that it was happy talking to XP and vice versa. I was very frustrated for ahwile as my husband and son can attest to.
-
I had this same problem just the other day and finally got it figured out. What I discovered was you have to use the usb connection/port so it says serial on a port that is not used in your computer. I have type of computer with no serial connections also. Check out your system device center and see how many ports there are listed and then use one that is not occupied and make sure that you set your hot sync using that port and it says serial not usb. The palm gets confused if you say usb. Took me about 3 hours to figure this out one night. Gave myself a headache.

What's The Fun Part In Geocaching?
Team Gryarvold replied to Sternenkriegerin + geo_tom's topic in General geocaching topics
ooh, you have just engaged my twisted sense of humor! How's this for "different flavor of ice cream"? Well known, respected geocacher passes away. the time and place of the visitation is announced and posted as an event cache: OPEN CASKET - with a small or micro in the tuxedo pocket! All the muggles respecting your 'privacy' as you pay your last respects - by signing his log! I know, a little macabre and morbid, but, for my funeral, I want people to have a smile on their face. Don't mourn my death, celebrate my life! What I haven't figured out is what to do with the cache log? Do we bury it with the Geocacher? Aaah, funerals, what fun!!!! Yes a smile on their face is worth it. I would say bury and then have everybody post their logs on the cache page. You can then print that out and put it in a scrap book. Since I want to be cremated I will have to come up with something to go with that. Have the cache hunt before the cremation or after, will my ashes be involved in the caches or just the log? I will have to ponder this some more. -

In the red desert of Wyoming where the divide actual splits around the dry desert basin. Water flows in but not out to anywhere. How about around here. I think that's a great spot. But is there a place to hide a good size cache that will represent this great quest? And not be prone to muggle wanna-see-looks-good-take-it-for-fun problems. Has anybody been here that can tell us that? -
Well golly, we put one in a cache we started, hope it doesn't get us in trouble. We thought it would be fun to see if anybody would enter it when they found it. Guess we better not do that anymore.

How about you do Loisiana since there will be so many more available in Texas. Good? Works for us. Sounds cool. -

We can do Louisiana and/or Texas. We live on the border for each. -
Do we like to hunt Micros? Yes. Do we like to hide Micros? Yes. For us what it boils down to is this. What do we have time to do today with our schedule? Can we go for a hike or bag a couple multicaches? Are we going somewhere all dressed up and we have time enroute to hunt or p&g? Micros with muggles are more challenging and we may have to try more than once to obtain that cache. Do we like it any less? No. To us both the micro caches as well as the larger have a place in our hunts and we would hate for the micros to fade away and not have any to find or place. We make use of micros for the first part of a multicache and have the larger at the end with all the goodies. We use micros to place for people like us to have time just for P&G's. We don't mind so much hicking a while and then finding a micro because that means less stuff to pack in and out. But we love finding the larger caches just as much. We know when we go in what we are looking for and if we don't want that one we go on to the next one, which in truth happens very rarely. Some places seem less disturbed with a micro placed than it would with a larger and that is fine with us as well. Just our 2 cents.

Thank you so much for answering my question. And I hope that I didn't sound like I didn't appreciate all hard work you guys do reviewing and approving for us, because I really do. It's just that I am so knew to this that I don't want do something that may not be correct. I was thinking that maybe I was hiding to many caches. Is that possible? Is there a limit? Going to GeoWoodstock must have been a blast. Glad he got to go. Kudos for that. My goodness, you've been busy. I see from the review queue that you've hidden more than a dozen caches over the past five days. In your home state, that's a "spike." I am sure that your reviewer will get caught up just as soon as his schedule permits. I got a little bit behind recently myself. When I sat down yesterday to get caught up, the website wouldn't let me search for the nearest caches to the one I was reviewing. So I took a break and tried again late at night when the site isn't as busy. It was down for maintenance. And just now, I tried pulling up one of your caches to see if the reviewer had left you a note. I got a server error message. So, now I am another 24 hours behind, through no fault of my own! In assigning reviewers to various areas, we staff for the average volume of caches -- not the peaks and valleys. Memorial Day weekend is historically quite busy for cache hiding, and it's also the weekend when GeoWoodstock was held. Your reviewer was lucky enough to be able to attend GeoWoodstock. We then pay the price when the trip is over and we need to get caught up. For information about how reviewers are selected, see the post entitled "How do I become a Volunteer Cache Reviewer?" in the FAQ thread that's pinned at the top of this forum. Hope this helps! Thanks for your patience.
-
I know that all of the reviewers are volunteers and that they more than likely have other jobs and other things in their lives going on, and they are doing a great job at the present with the huge number of caches that I would imagine need to be reviewed, but can we add some more? It seems to take quite a long spell to get the new caches approved and I know that cachers are waiting for new caches to seek in an area that needs new ones listed. Can people volunteer to be reviewers, or is it a select few that have been around awhile? I know I wouldn't mind be reviewer if it meant getting the caches approved more quickly. I am quite new to this so any feed back would be great, and maybe I am just blowing smoke.

This raises a question for me as well. I have just put out my first 2 caches and on both of them I have had comments of coords being off. But if I go look for caches my gpsr zeros right in on them. What can I be doing wrong in setting mine up? Also I played with my gpsr out in the driveway and found out that if I pointed it in a different direction right over the same spot, just turning east, west, north, south, I got a different location reading mark. I am really stumped and comcerned because I want seekers to be able to find my caches.

You get so into it you go with out getting a GPS unit and hope luck smiles on you (which it did). Then along comes mothers day and your husband asks you what you would like for a gift and you say "Why honey a nice GPS unit would be lovely" he looks at you askance and goes out an buys a very good one for you. Then you sit up until 2am trying to figure out how to use it and what programs you like best in conjunction. Then get up at the crack of dawn the next morning, call the daughter and have her bring the 3yr old grandson, load up and hit the trail.
