  1. Thanks everyone for the responses. I feel better overall. I know I overreacted to the land owner but his aggression got to me. There was a new-looking fence and he claimed to have had the land surveyed and his property lines defined. He may have had this encounter before and had the "right" response in the ready. The cache I believe was placed at the base of a pole that had a Buried Gas line warning sign on it. I just have to find another piece of GeoArt to aim for.
  2. So on 9/8/2013 my wife and I hit the Colorado plains to get a piece of GeoArt under our belt. GC2N5D1 was the start of the art and we started on the southern most end. But by the time we made it to GC2N5E7 we thought we were crusin' but this was the first possible DNF. Yup, we were being honest and logging the finds versus those we didn't find. Just as we were giving up, this guy rides up on a 4-wheel and asks if this (he was holding a pill bottle) was what we were looking for? We assumed it was the CO replacing the missing cache, but we were quickly mistaken. It was the property owner!!! He was angry beyond words. Take a look at my needs archive log, I was dumbstruck. I honestly tried to convert him to Geocaching, and explaned the game. He did not care one bit...My wife, 13Pinky, tried her best to calm the situation but his sailor mouth only alienated her as well... It got to the point that I exclaimed that would forgo the efforts I would put in to reporting the cache as "on private property" and "good luck with the 'millions of cachers' that would descend onto his property" Being the honest person I am, I reported the NA log and killed the rest of my caching day. My wife was equally unmotivated to continue. But here I am checking the map and I find a "Found it!" log on the cache knowing full well that the cache was not in place and the cache had been confiscated... Do I just log a find knowing I saw it in the private property owner's hand as he berated me to complete my Geo Art? WTF, about he next log as a Found it knowing full well there was no cache to log? I suspect it was someone just completing the GeoArt/power trail and logging with a drive-by...Unless someone took it upon themselves to replace, yet again, the missing cache that the property owner picked up.
  3. I encountered one that was a magnetic sign, maybe 2" by 3" and what "gave it away" was a slight bulge. The sign was a random set of numbers that I didn't correlate with anything in particular. The bulge was a zip baggie glued to the magnet. The magnet sealed up nicely, I believe, with the substrate. The baggie was the container... Bending the rules I am sure but creative and it kept true to the concept. A container with a removable log that was hidden.
  4. I am at the front end of a 51 day streak. Which reminds me I have to log last nights find. I work swing shift at Denver International Airport. And I live east of the airport, the plains are riddled with micros. I have come to the realization that my commute will get longer and longer. As that is when I cache, usually on the way home.
  5. I find that searching for decent swag is just as fun as looking for a cool cache. Every now and then you find a store or bin that has worthwhile stuff. I had some party favors I must have bought for my sons birthday but missed giving them out. A 25 pack of 6˝ beachballs. Deflated they fit perfectly even in some smaller caches. The big party supply stores are a good spot, they have some multy packs of toys for cheap and some toys are all right.
  6. I see your Fred Texas and raise you a Monowi, Nebraska My bucket list includes Easter Island and Egypt.
  7. I help when reasonably able. I carry some temp logs and I have only really needed to replace a few. But I'm new. I'm still excited to play and help when able. A couple of times I've seen some caches in dire need of repair. One time I offered the CO help and did the maintenance for him. But I will log a NM with the support as mentioned.
  8. Take a look at the whole Maxped line. I realized the need for Maxped in my EDC. I have a Maxpedition Mini Pocket Organizer for my EDC and I love it. I have not filled it but I see just how easy it would be to convert it to geocaching. I would not hesitate to get a larger bag for my geocaching gear and just use a carabeener to clip it to my regular backpack, which is an Eagle Creek backpack. I am pretty new to this but I would suggest that your needs determine what you get and like mentioned above, if it endures and works for you, you don't need brand or high price to cover you. My EDC maxped gets tossed into my bag all the time and it is minimal as I stay pretty urban, any adventure and I pack my regular camping/frame backpack with what I need.
  9. Holy cow I have a long way to go. I am at 31 days so far. I have endured rain storms, snow storms, and regretfully I allowed more than 200+ days to go by without caching. Absolutely no excuse to the slump other than I hadn't realized the fun in the game. Even so, I have about 3 caches to go back and "re-find" since I didn't have an account to log. My biggest fear is how far I will have to go to keep the streak alive. I keep caching on my commute to and from work. It will eventually become a weirder and further commute...
  10. I admit, I am a short logger. But I have only found micros and maybe a half a dozen smalls. I completely hear and understand the concept but 98% of my finds have been within 40 feet of my car. I had contemplated writing more, but it seems a bit patronizing to write a log that took longer to write than it took find the cache. Even without reading this thread I felt guilty after just leaving a TFTC SL. So I've made the effort to just say at least one thing to describe the weather or what I'm doing that gave me a chance to geocache. I'm pretty new, so as I learn I'll adjust my methods and habits. Maybe a little more creativity is in order.
  11. Back in 1998, on a trip to Australia, my friend and I were walking down the street. There was a lady walking a chihuahua. He freaked out, pointed at the dog and yelled, "Rabid Dingo!" Of course he was being childish. (Yeah me too) I've used as a handle / username since. Spelling edit.
  12. In regards to the original post, Theft of hides is bad mmmkay? But this thread has derailed at the OP's hand. Their competitive nature has spilled over into basic online conversation and it seems they only see "the prize" at the end. Even when posting the initial post, in their minds they would "win". Of course it could be any one or two of many things: -Convincing people of their plight. -Gaining sympathy -Confirming their position as victims -Outing their aggressors -Looking for validation It just seems that they ARE winning, but they are the only ones in the race. So, in effect, they will both come in first and last.
  13. No need to use a paper journal to do that. When posting your log using the app on your phone, set the log to be a field note (that you can edit later from your computer, before it actually is posted to the cache). Then you can make sure the date and time are correct as well as posting a more elaborate log if you like. Ok, that. Makes sense. I will give that a shot. Thanks.
  14. This is especially puzzling since every cache found has coordinates, and given coordinates it is very easy to determine the local time at the cache! If the dates on any of your logs are incorrect, just go back and edit them. I chuckled at that, it seems appropriate. Plus it may be on purpose from Seattle. Thanks for everyones replies. I may get a field note paper journal and log the next day when not time sensitive.
  15. I had to search, but now finding the log, I remembered why I thought to stop. The snow was to be significant, and if you are familiar with snow in Colorado it can snow and acumulate quickly but melt just as fast. I knew warm weather was only a couple of days away and by logging one in after midnight I mentally checked the day off and figured I could hole myself in the next day in the cold and not have to dig through snow to find caches. Log and pic of the midnight cache
  16. So, April has been a great month for me. After 200+ days without caching, I have definitely caught the bug. I have two kids and I work nights. My wife works mornings to keep daycare costs down. (I miss her ) One thing I have done is cache during my commute. I have about 100 caches along and around my route. So it is easy to catch a couple here and there, if I am not running late. On my way home a few nights ago I realized that my job had kept me late enough that my drive home would go past midnight. So I found a couple of caches and timed one to specifically fall after 00:00 hrs or Midnight. I logged the find on my phone (GPSr is on my wish list. ) and it showed logged the correct day as far as "tomorrow" goes after midnight. I figured, Cool it will register that way and with the continued snow storms I can keep my streak of at least one a day going with this method. So here I am about a dozen days into "The Streak" and I check the profile stats page and find that my streak is not correct. It shows a gap on the night that I logged after midnight thinking it would count for the next day. So my question: When does ground speak recognize the start of the next day? My phone and the log on the GC app on my phone said the date was correct (after midnight = next day) but my logs all registered "the day before". And by all my logs I am talking maybe 5...
  17. Got my WWFM X this week. I gotta say,Geocoins are cool.
  18. I like them. Lone R, you are the inspiration for me to create some handmade swag. I found your blog via Pinterest and I didn't know what to do, but one of my first moments of clarity I have been tying some creative knots. A small baggie and an ID card labeling it as available swag and I think I am good to go. Small Key fobs. Inexpensive for me to make but decent enough to consider it a "trade up" IMHO. For the OP, a handmade key chain would be cool. Antlers and all.
  19. Nevadanick, That is a great idea. I will definitely set up a travel pack next time. Thanks for that advice.
  20. No, I just thought I had read that somewhere. Not in a specific location.
  21. Thanks for the responses. I am just concerned that since I am surrounded I will predominantly log my nearest caches. I live in rural Colorado and they are mostly FC's, the busted ones are sun dried. Some wrapped in tape of sorts. Like I said, so far, it is two but I hazard a guess that more could be in the same condition. I don't mean to throw anyone under the bus, I am just looking ahead for myself. I want to make sure that if I go on a daily streak and find a pile of them that it doesn't look like I am looking for busted caches to whine about. At the same time I am looking for different CO's to mix it up a bit.
  22. I have several questions if I may pile them up int one thread...(I'll underline them for the TL:DR crowd) I just re-started this season and began to clear out the closest caches to me. There are a couple of dominant Cache owners that have a multitude of caches around me. One cache I found was in need of maintenance and I offered to cover it for him. (Since the enthusiasm of an FNG is still alive and well.) but after finding a couple that needed maintenance, I wonder what the perceptions would be if I keep reporting every "Needs Maintenance" So, what is the etiquette on maintenance? Do I offer to cover it each time? or do I call the owner out and say do a maintenance run on your caches? I thought I read "Don't use gel pens." Is that the recommendation and why? Of the handful of logs I have encountered, if any were damp or moist, stamps bled and some ink bled but a lot was still readable. Log replacement etiquette, when is it Ok to replace or does one just amend? Or do the limitations of space determine the need? If one replaces the log, what is to be done with the full log? Or tying back to the maintenance question, if the log is damp/wet/unusable do you amend/replace the log then? Sorry if it is a barrage of questions , thanks for reading and responding.
