  1. Whoa there - not everything is about geocaching! icon_eek.gif

If you know of a Revolutionary War hero there, there might be other veterans there as well.

There are many veteran organizations which would like to be informed of any abandoned gravesites.

Please take the time to drop an email to a couple in your area and remind them about this cemetery.

Did you see any flags on Memorial Day? If so, this might not be as abandoned as you think.

In any case, use your common sense in setting up any caches at this location - you don't want anything to come back and haunt you.

  2. I've been doing that for a few years now. It is a definite help while doing genealogy work to be able to specify where a cemetery/grave is located.

So many times over the years, the names get changed so when you're looking for them on a map, you can't find them.

I've also started to do the same type of gps recording for Civil War graves and monuments I've found.

  3. First off, I always wear long pants when bushwacking but if you do wear shorts, you might want to use a trick the forest fighters use....

Spray Arid Extra Dry on your legs or arms before going through the bush, it will help keep the oils off of your skin.

Ranking would be fine with me. Many of us really don't care about being ranked and I have no problem if I am listed as number 23,339 on the list. I play Hearts online and my ranking is around 7,000 and I could care less. I just play for fun but there are some people that really get into the ranking and it makes it more enjoyable to them.

I tend to agree here's my ranking at SetiAtHome

"Your rank out of 4472621 total users is: 116623rd place" and I'm actually in the top 97%! I can't let being in 116,623 place stop me from finding ET though! icon_razz.gif

I agree, I get the best enjoyment out of going as close as I can to the coords and then stand there and think "Now, where would I have hidden a cache?" and look around. I'm always happiest when I actually was right! icon_smile.gif

But then, when I'm fooled by a really good cache hider, it really makes my day when I finally track it down! icon_biggrin.gif

  6. OK, I started using mine while toasting with my favorite beverage around campfires.

It seemed appropriate for my Civil War activities and is a bit of a play on Muzzaltalph (spelling is way off but you know what I mean).

My avatar by the way is really me firing a cannon combined with a behind-the-scenes picture from 'Gods and Generals', the muzzleblast from my cannon covers over the landing cushion of the stuntmen.

  7. Hasn't this issue kinda been answered when the celebrities of Hollywood sued the publishers of the maps showing where they lived? (and lost)

I just did a goggle and found this site: Celebrity Home Address

If they can post this information, I hardly think there's any real legal issue to a "Hey, isn't this a great view?" posting.

  8. I can understand the frustration that Night Stalker must have felt when his cache was archived after spending so much effort to set it up.

However, I do not like the idea of giving so much power to little beaurocrats and ask permission to post coordinates to an interesting site. It is a virtual and it is not a secret location!

I think Night Stalker should take a deep breath, find another interesting site somewhere else, I'm sure there is one, and be content that he at least educated a NPS person about geocaching.

"The hardest thing to find is something that's not there!"

  9. Along these same lines, I had to archive one of my caches because an individual who lived near it 'couldn't live with all the extra traffic' down his dead-end street (his words), and removed my ammo box.

I calculated the extra traffic was 1 car every 3 weeks! icon_confused.gif

Obviously, in his mind every single person going down this public road simply must have been going to the cache!

What really irks me is that he and his family accidentally found the cache and actually joined this group! Although I see he never went to another site.

I have to wonder if now when there's a cache in some area, every little path and trash pile is because of cachers (in some people's mind that is).

  10. My flight instructor would always be surprised when after he would disorient me and then ask me where the airport was, I'd casually point in the direction it was in.

That being said, I sure do appreciate having a GPSr! Having a vector to my destination gives me the great illusion of knowing where I'm going! icon_smile.gif

But while I'm driving, I always follow the philosophy of "You're not lost until you're out of gas!" icon_razz.gif

  11. Personally, I wouldn't start out a travel bug at a virtual cache.

There are many traditional caches that are veteran related as there are many veterans associated with geocaching: How did you serve?

You did not have your area of country in your profile but I'm sure if you did a search in your area with the keyword of veteran, or vietnam, or whatever, you can find a traditional cache to start out your travel bug.

Even my 'As the Eagle Flys' is a small traditional cache in Michigan at a Vietnam memorial site.

    Good luck.

  12. At the caver's org they said:

    quote:
At the present time, the single biggest impact that geo-caching may have on caves in the posting of cave location on the Internet.

I think that says about it all, THEY are good, anybody else is bad. They want their places to be known only to themselves! It's OK for them to be crawling around and exploring but heaven forbid if we encourage anybody to stop by for a quick visit!

I also found it amusing how the ad-hoc committee constantly said we 'claim' to be concerned about the environment or private property or whatever.

I guess this would have to come under my general rule of 'just leave other people alone'.

I came really close to buying one, and would have except it doesn't seem to work very well.

I do have one that I actually bought before gecaching. My intent was to use the watch when I was doing a little photography so I could note the actual location I took a picture.

Unfortunately, even though this watch is accurate when it works (I verified that at a surveyed point), it is quite tempermental in holding a lock.

I am disappointed in the watch for all the expense! I've never been disappointed with my eTrex Legend though!

  15. I'm no doctor either but after injuring my back in the old days, it's never been the same.

It's amazing how little it takes to throw it out again - such as bending down to pick up a glove I dropped - ouch! For days I could barely walk and it took me 5 minutes to get out of a car.

One discovery I made was to find a good chiropractor. After a couple of visits, I felt better than I had in years and able to walk just fine. I just need a tune-up every once in a while now.

Walking on uneven ground while caching and wearing heavy boots is very dangerous for me and I'm always as careful as I can be.

    Good luck!

  16. I actually have mixed feelings about this now.

I had posted on a page with my 'no-find' that I really needed parking coordinates.

The cache was in an area where it looked like parking would have been on private property, then on my next trip, I found a place to park more than half a mile away but having to cross busy intersections, finally on my third attempt, I found a more logical place to park.

This cache was exceedingly frustrating and frankly, I nearly gave up on it. After sticking to it, I was glad to have finally found it. All that being said, my experience would have been more enjoyable if I knew of the safer, more logical parking spot on my first attempt.

The actual cache was still enough of a challenge even knowing where to park.

If regoarrarr says its Good, thats good enough for me. He wasnt the only local speaking up for the cache, even in the other thread.

    Unfortunately, regoarrarr said:

Also, I don't know where the individual stage caches are for Sith 2, but the ones for Sith 1 were not in the same park.

In plain words, no one knows what erik really had to make his decision and now that erik has said:

    quote:
I will only say that the seven preliminary caches had almost nothing in the way of verbage to describe them. Ditto for the bonus cache. There was no mention of letter boxing or anything to elaborate on this. I refered the cache submitter to the guidelines, which ask that something of this sort be combined as a multicache. I got a disjointed rant in response.

Perhaps we should stop talking about what erik should do and just let him do his work in his normal concientous way.

I originally voted to have them listed as seperate caches- can I retract that and vote instead to remove Team Jedi from geocaching.com becuase of extreme unsportsmanlike behaviour unless they chill out and stop their wild accusations soon?

With a GREAT deal of reluctance I feel I have to agree with this statement.

No matter how many clever caches someone has placed, no one has the right to put individuals through the type of abuse I read in the original thread.

I believe this thread is an attempt by all of us to take a deep breath and try to resolve the original issues which only 1 or two of us even know the details about.

I think the original issues are now moot and the real issue of whether we have to put up with this 'unsportsmanlike behaviour' or not is what needs to be decided.

It is not unthinkable that this entire activity could come to a screeching halt because of this behavior.

Hmmm...I sincerely hope that comment was due to the fact you thought this was an American thread. Else mine Royal-Canadian-serving boot rise up and smite thee in thy arse.

Actually, one of my happier memories of boot camp in Parris Island was a french-speaking Canadian who had joined as a way of becoming an American citizen more quickly. He would just stand there and smile as the DI would be doing his 'maggot' routine as he didn't understand what was being said.

I'd hate to tell you the first American phrase we taught him! icon_wink.gif
