  1. My 60Cx did OK, but my Legend does not know what to do. I guess i can just wait until April FYI, here is link to fix your PC if you have Win2K or older OS. http://www.fastservers.net/blog/operating-...supported_oses/
  2. UTM is ideal if you are using TOPOs with your GPS unit. A standard TOPO has 1 Km sq grid marked out on it. Setting your GPS to UTM allows you to pinpoint, within 25m where you are on the map. That is extreamly difficult if you are working in lat/lon. Here is good link to using UTM http://www.maptools.com/UsingUTM/
  3. IMHO. you just payed $350+ for a GPSr. Why kludge together your own cable and risk frying your unit. I would rather pay Garmin the $23 and have peice of mind that if something goes wrong, they will stand behind it.
  4. It sounds like you have "smart" antennas ie the antenna units have the receiver electronics in the antenna housing. If this is the case, then the connector you have, RJ45, might have both power and signal in it and you would need to know the pinouts before re-wiring it. In addition, you would have to know the protocol, ie messages formats that the thing transmits. Do you have a manufacturer and model number ?
  5. I created a couple of custom TOPOs and loaded them on mu GPS. How do you set the color of the map display so it looks more like a standard TOPO, ie Green background, blue water, brown contors ?
  6. What I don't understand is why the electronic companies ( Garmin, Magellan, apple, etc ) don't password protect their equipment. Since almost everything these days has to connect to the internet, it would be completely feasible to lock out any functionality in portable electronics unless a password or pin was entered. The companies would allow you to set the password only through their web site, where they could monitor the serial number of the equipment. If your unit was stolen, you could report it to them, and any type of password resetting would be prohibited.
  7. I received an email in about 4 days. I wanted information on the "rubberband" for an Etrex legend. They instructed me to call customer support, which I did and they sent me a new rubberband. I offered to pay for it, but they sent it for free, I think Garmin has one of the best customer service programs going. They act like they actually care for their customers !!! To bad Verizon and Cingular aren't like that
  8. Look at the sellers rating as you would in any other purchase and make your decision. I am not sure why someone referenced farther up the thread eBay vs reputable dealer. I see more complaints about so called "reputable" dealers than eBay purchases where due dilligence was practiced. Checkout Amazon. They have it for $109 including shipping. You can pickup a microSD card there too, pretty cheap. I found amazon has some of the best prices for GPSr stuff, and THEY are a reputable company
  9. I have two chargers, one is a Rayovac 1 Hr charger. It works pretty well. THe other is a 15 min Energizer. IMHO it is a piece of junk. Most of the time when I put a battery in, the LED flashes indicating it won't charge the battery. I tried different techniques to "Prepare" the battery using the Energizer unit. Sometimes if I would "Short" it out for 10 seconds, or put it in the Rayovac for a min ot so, then it would take the charge. But lately it just refuses to charge my batteries.
  10. I know that you can't simply load the map from the gps into mapsource. I tried it but it didn't work. You have to modify the registry and such. Check out these websites for help. Also cypherman came up with this program. I think it will make things much easier. Haven't tried it myself yet but looks very good. http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/home http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm Let me know if you still need help Yes I did modify the registry. Mapsource loaded the file into itself fine. I could see the map and manipulate it. But it did not show up in the available map window. And why would mapsource not see my map once it was uploaded using SendMap ??? BTW, It downloded the routes and waypoints just fine. Thanks I will check out those links.
  11. OK So I finally suceeded in making a topo map and I was able to load the image into Mapsource. However the map number did not show up in the "map" tab window. I was able to upload the .img to my 60 Cx with Sendmap with no problems. When I tryed to download the the map back into Mapsource, it told me there were no maps to download. The map WAS clearly in the 60Cx. I have the Mapsource version that came with the 60Cx and I have not enabled it with any commercial maps. Could it be that Mapsource must have a valid map key for it to upload ? Is there a registry setting to turn this on ? Thanks in advance
