  1. Howdy.

A few months ago, I went on a WMing spree in the city and posted about a dozen or so WMs to "Georgia Historic Markers." Not all of them were the state markers, but they all met the category requirements. Over a month later, someone made a fuss about one of them not being on a list of state markers, and suddenly that marker was declined. I sent an email to the group leader asking why, but never got a response. Instead, the category requirement had changed saying it had to be on a list on a website.

No biggie to me; it's his category. Now I have a mess of WMs that don't have a home. I'm sure this has been discussed a thousand times in one form or another, but I don't know what I should do with them. They run a wide range of subject, from local lawyers to Spanish-American War memorials to Masonic monuments. I guess I could submit a mess of categories for them. I could submit a "Miscellaneous Georgia Markers and Monuments" category, but I'm not sure if that would be the best idea.

Any clue what I should do category-wise?

I archived the WMs. If I get the categories straightened out, can someone let me know if there's a way to change the category without my having to redo all of them?

    Thanks, all.

  2. So, there are only like 20 WMs within 100 miles of my house (including 4 of my own), so I set out today to do more of my part. I found a hole host of memorials and statues and markers worthy of being posted, but a mess of them are very close to one another.

Is it proper to just post them all or is there a limit to how many should be in an area?

    Thanks,

  3. Ive been contemplating one with both the last and the first at the same coords. with the first stage being bright orange, and the last being well cammoed..

We did one like this a few weekends ago. After an hour of bushwhacking, we found the coords to the final were the same as the original. Very clever.

  4. I dont think the picture was meant to deceive. Looking through the gallery of the person who posted it, most of his pics are rather obvious fake/viral email type pics.

Umm...he posted a stock photo with the caption "View from the Cache" or something similar. That's way down the path to deception.

    Pic's gone anyway. :)

  5. Don't know if this has already been brought up, but one of the pictures in the large banner gallery is not from a cache. The date on it is 5/5/06, and it shows a beautiful sunset over a lake and mountains. Too bad that came as a sample picture with a Windows XP install.

    For shame.

  6. How do I know what I should bring? I mean should I just bring 4 or 5 items of varying value?

I raided my desk drawers at work and came up with some cool stuff. I had a few stickers, some ear plugs (unused ;)), a crappy yo-yo, some CDs, rubber balls, and other stuff. At any given time, I've got about 8 or 9 items in the bag to trade, all of varying values so I can trade as fairly as I can.

  7. Thanks for the input, guys.

I did a pocket query that showed all caches placed within a hundred miles of my home coordinates in the last 3 weeks or so, and only one showed up as being in Georgia. It's very possible that I just overlooked it.

If everyone else isn't having problems, I'll chalk it up to the fact that there simply haven't been very many new caches in GA that are withint 100 miles of my house. I still find it weird, though...I guess we need to get out and put out some new caches. ;)

    Thanks again.

  8. I live on a state border (North Augusta, SC...about 6 miles from Augusta, GA), so I'm interested in caches in both South Carolina and Georgia.

When I get the Weekly Cache Notification, the caches are always all in South Carolina. Also, on my member page, I have the link for "List newest in South Carolina." Both are fine, and I like the info, but I find it hard to believe that there's no new caches in the state of Georgia. ;)

Yes, I know how to find the closest to my house, which includes both SC and GA, but the notifications for new caches don't include Georgia. Can someone let me know if there's a way to make the new cache listings for two (or more) states? If there isn't one...feature request!

  9. Is there a way to display the extended GPX info for a cache on the Garmin Rino 530?

I notice that the GPX format includes all sorts of goodies, like terrain, difficulty, type, hint, owner, description, and log entries. While log entries and description may be too much, I'd like to be able to display terrain and difficulty at least. Any way to put that in the data field on the Rino?

I use EasyGPS to load waypoints through Windows XP. The GPSr is connected via USB. What other info is needed?

  10. There are size and dimension restrictions on the images. I usually resize my own pics to 500 wide, which works great.

  11. A compass needle will swing if you turn around while standing still, but a GPS needle will not. It won't swing unless and until you move a certain minimum distance and speed.

9 times out of 10, you're right, but the OP's Rino 130 has a built-in compass (like mine), and the arrow swings as you turn around.

  12. Do you think it is in the transfer of data? When checking the coords did you just look at the chache front page and compare to the downloaded data in your rino?

I haven't had a chance to do any research since the problem wasn't apparent until we were on the trail. From memory, the plot in EasyGPS looked correct, so I suspect that it was EasyGPS that is the culprit. Don't quote me on that, though.

I have to do some maintenance tonight on my Rino, so I'll make sure to note the coords on the page, in the LOC file, in EasyGPS, on the EasyGPS map, and on the Rino.

    I'll keep everyone informed.

    Well, test failed. ;)

I did a system reset on my 530 and reloaded my waypoints; everything matched all around. I did it four or five times with the same accurate results. I'll keep trying to recreate the problem.

    Just my luck.

  14. ... The coords were downloaded from site and using "easyGPS". One thing I have noticed was that the coords on the printed page from Geocache site did not match the coords when I looked at the Locate page on the GPS - it was off but not much. ...

One problem that happens is that Easy GPS can use DDD.DDDDD but not translate that into DDD MM.MMM when it sends the info to your GPS. Thus the GPS doesn't get the info it's expecting and the coords are off.

I've had this problem in the past when I didn't use the EasyGPS you can download from Grounspeak. When you get it from Terragraphix directly you have to adjust a setting.

That's my guess, you have to adjust a setting.

I am sure you are correct, I went to the EasyGPS on my desktop and will need to change the preferences.

    Thank you very much!

I'm going to disagree here. It's very possible and probably that this is the case, but I've got a different experience with our Rinos.

I've got a Rino 530 and recently wiped all the waypoints and downloaded a group of them from the site's LOC file using EasyGPS. The first cache that our group went to was one that I had already done, so I knew exactly where it was, but my GPSr told me it was 1.53 miles to the west from where we found it. The other 7 waypoints that I loaded in the batch were right on...it was just the one that was off. On the previous visit, the waypoint loaded from EasyGPS was right on and I found the cache within about 4 feet of where my GPSr told me it was.

My wife also has a Rino 530, and I use the radio to send her the next waypoints; hers said we were 1.53 miles off as well. That tells me that the waypoint was loaded into the GPSr with the wrong coordinates.

I didn't think about it at the time, but I should have checked the LOC file versus the loaded waypoint to see if there was a difference there or not.

  15. How do I know which COM port to use? GETR ready for a clicking fest>

    Click on each in turn:

MyComputer, Right click and get properties.

    hardware tab

    Device manager

it should be under universal usb controllers - But you might have to look hard for it.

In Windows XP, it'll show up under "Ports" with the COM number beside it.

  16. I bring a ball when I'm caching with my friends. Playing a game of catch in the park is a good way to look like you belong there while waiting for muggles to leave.

That's a great idea! I'm putting that one down right now.
