  1. What did you think of Objective C, xcode, Interface Builder, etc.? After working in Java for the past few years and not looking at a line of C++ code, I found Objective C kind of hard to pick up. I'm slowing getting an understanding of the language. It's not the object model that I'm used to, that's for sure. --Marky
  2. Just skip a days caching and you'll save $9.99 in gas.
  3. I tried this method, and while it works ok, it was rather painful to do running GSAK in VMWare Fusion on a Mac and trying to get access to the AirSharing public folder. Copying the files took for ever. iGeoCacher seems interesting, but I'm not willing to pay that much for an app, not knowing if I would find it useful. Maybe if there was an iGeoCacher Free that would allow me to try it out, with limitations (like only allowing 50 caches to be imported).
  4. I already have AirSharing and GSAK, so I'll have to give that a try!
  5. But, for sake of arguing, what if you want different levels for different applications? Inside, vs. outside? New Battery vs. old battery? Is it that big of a deal to power up, quick click, slide it over to desired level, click back and your done? Just annoying more than anything. Every other unit I have had powered on to the desired level and stayed there. Just one of those little annoyances. I prefer the current behavior, as the conditions when I shut it off are almost always different than when I turn it back on. I like that it defaults to the best battery conservation by default. If they add the ability to save the backlight setting, I hope they will still allow this behavior as well. --Marky
  6. Congrats on the job. My son works for Apple too. You're moving into our cache rich area. We look forward to seeing your find logs. -Marky
  7. That seems like a pretty simple app to write. If I have some spare time, maybe I'll give it a go. I'm surprised there isn't something out there already. I know there are tons for palm and pocket PC. --Marky
  8. Nice! Thanks for the post, I'll have to go grab that one.
  9. If you clearly state what you want and why (what are you trying to do with the information?), I'll try and write it if it's not too much trouble and release it as a free app. --Marky
  10. Yeah, there's some bug in how the Google Map iPhone app searches on coordinates. Here is the gc.com URL for a google map link: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.2619+-121.89147 On the iPhone, the Google Map app searchs for "37.2619 -121.89147" and it ends up in the ocean as stated by the OP. If you edit the search to be "n37.2619 w121.89147" and press search, it will display the correct location. --Marky
  11. The server doesn't seem to be responding. --Marky
  12. With iPhone apps, the updates seem to be free, so if you assume that the app will improve over time, it's not outrageously expensive, plus the market for a geocaching app is MUCH smaller than, let's say for example, a video game app, so you have to factor that in. I think I will probably end up writing my own, since anything anyone else writes won't do everything I want it to do. --Marky
  13. That's an amazing omission on Garmin's part. Waypoint Averaging over a period of days can produce really great coordinates (e.g. taking readings on multiple days and then averaging them by hand), but Waypoint Averaging over a period of minutes isn't going to do all that much for you (in my opinion). Your accuracy is only as good as the current satellite constellation configuration, and that changes from day to day. Have there been any studies on waypoints taken with and without averaging (using the same chipset)? I would guess that the results would be at most a difference of +-5ft. I've been wrong before though... --Marky
  14. Assuming that the PN-40 uses the same screen resolution as the PN-20, that is a 2.2" 220x176 pixel screen. The colorado (and the oregon) have a 3" 240x400 pixel screen. That's nearly 3 times the number of pixels. I do like the $29.95 a year Map Library subscription option for unlimited access to all of Delorme's nice map imagery. I think that's a very reasonable price. From everything I hear, the PN-40 is going to be a serious contender. --Marky
  15. We have a few hundred out traveling. One of my "joke" responses to missing travelers is: the more you release, the less you notice when they go missing. Seriously though, if you want to have successful geocoin travelers, you have to do some up front preparations: Drill a hole in the geocoin to attach a tag to it. Add a 'travel buddy' metal tag. Add a laminated goal tag. Attach everything together with aircraft wire. Drilling a hole in the geocoin makes it MUCH less collectible, and also makes it very unlikely to be sold on ebay (although the fact that it's activated also make is less likely to show up on ebay). Attaching a 'travel buddy' tag makes them look more like the familiy 'travelbug', so people are less likely to assume that it is a normal trade item. Having a goal tag helps people know if they can help it towards its goal without having to check the website, so are more likely to move it along. The aircraft wire makes the removal of the tags a deliberate act, rather than an accidental one (ball and chains do come apart sometimes). We have good success with our travelers when we've tagged them in this manner. --Marky
  16. There's a lot of nested BIG and SMALL html elements, which is not really suggested since the result is unspecified in the html spec. I didn't see anything illegal though. --Marky
  17. I haven't tried this app yet, but looking at the online doc I think it only needs wifi to transfer the files to the iPhone. When you are out caching in the sticks, it will pull up local html files off your iphone's local storage even if you don't have cell reception.
  18. Oh, my bad, I assumed you would have already updated to v 2.6. This was a known bug in 2.4
  19. That's my guess. Does the work around of "Where to"->Geocache work? --Marky
  20. It might be a map render issue, and trying to display the map at that point causes the crash. --Marky
  21. I didn't see this issue mentioned in the Colorado wiki. Yesterday, I tried to find this multi-cache: GC1EM3H, I could only read the first 11 waypoints and then the text was truncated. Has this already been documented? --Marky
  22. I thought you already did. Since I don't have a current passport (and the fact that I won't be going across the rockies to this year's geocoinfest), I would say no, I probably wouldn't attend. --Marky
  23. I thought it was interesting/humorous that the two people who posted to this thread who successfully got a GPS from this deal didn't even need it and are going to sell it on ebay. --Marky
  24. May I respectively differ with this statement. This behavior with the Colorado is the same reaon I returned mine!!! I left the 400 T by accident overnight and it showed tracks all over the place - without ever even moved. I never saw this with my 60scx!!! I don't feel this is normal behaviour for a GPS. You left it on indoors or outdoors overnight? If indoors, you'd expect to see some wandering due to GPS signal reflection/obstruction. If you are talking about leaving it on overnight while you were out camping under a clear sky, then I'd say that might be a problem. --Marky
