  1. I wish I had similar news. I went caching yesterday and my google pixel was so far off and random I thought I was standing next to a giant magnet. I rebooted and it was much better. That said, it was awful. It got me close but when switching to compass and trying to find the cache it was basically giving me random directions and footage. My iPhone was actually pretty accurate. I wonder if it is the Pixel itself or Google Fi service. I am suspecting the service.
  2. I received an email that prompted me to try to figure this out for myself. Here is what I came up with. It looks like a lot of work, but after the first time it takes less than 5 minutes to do. The GPX file I have is missing a bunch of data fields so this solution only gives you SOME of the information for each cache. I will keep working on it and post and email you the final instructions if/when I get it done. To load geocaches into blackberry as contacts: Step A - Prepare Pocket Query File for Import 1. Open your pocket query *.GPX file in Excel 2. Name the data range by highlighting the complete data set, then menus Insert, Name, Define and give it a name 3. Save the file as an excel file (ie: GClist.xls) 4. Close the file Step B - Importing to Outlook 1. In Outlook go to menus File, Import and Export, Import from another program of file (next>) 2. Microsoft Excel (next>) 3. Select your XLS file and pick replace duplicates (next>) 4. Select your contact folder as the location to add them (next>) 5. Click the box next to the name you gave the data set, then click the Map Custom Fields button 6. Drag the data field names from the data set on the left to the outlook field names on the right. I did it this way: 6a. ns1:name3 = Name (full name, not just first or last) 6b. ns1:name = Company 6c. ns1:type = Job Title 6d. ns1:urlname6 = Business Address 6e. ns1:desc4 = Notes 6f. ns1:url5 = Web Page 7. Hit OK, then Finish and they are imported. Next steps require some data manipulation in excel prior to importing 1. Cache first listing date 2. Coordinates Further steps require getting this data into the pocket query file 1. Cache Notes Final steps will be trickier 1. Cache log notes Hope this helps. Please send me comments about easier ways, or where I am just plain wrong.
  3. Good point. Thanks for the tip. I would have missed it and never gotten this one published.
  4. I was thinking about putting together a multi/puzzle cache this summer. One of the requirements to get the clue to each further stage of the cache would be to email me a photograph of the cacher holding up trash that they hauled out while searching for the stage they are logging. Has anybody tried this? Was it successful? There are plenty of areas in and around my town that could use a bit of a clean up.
  5. Interesting. I just got a "new version" Vista HCx and I thought I was going crazy. It certainly seems to have a less bright, duller screen than my Legend Cx.
  6. Didn't really think of that. Might be a better idea. Thanks! Changed the ad based on cacheoholic's input.
  7. Dead Garmin etrex Legend Cx - Make me an offer! Comes with: * Garmin etrex Lengend Cx GPSr * Invisible Sheild screen protector * 256MB micro SD memory card * USB sync cable * Manual and Quick Reference Guide * Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager CD Here is the deal: I was going to sell this fully functioning unit to my friend at work, who promptly took it home and now it is D-E-A-D. Garmin says they will repair or replace with a refurbished unit for $99. I think that also comes with a warranty of some kind. Or, use this for parts. I have removed the rubber perimeter ring to take a peek inside which is easily re-attached with double-sided tape.
  8. I've tried with new batteries and even trying to get power via USB. I tried to do the hard reset numerous times. It is really weird because it doesn't respond at all, not even a flash on the screen. Acts as if it is getting no power.
  9. It isn't a cache yet, but it should be! Giant Pink Bunny 44 degrees 14 minutes 39.53 seconds North 7 degrees 46 minutes 10.99 seconds East
  10. I found a 94 year old man. He was an old avid hiker who had snuck away from his retirement home for a walk on the trail. Once I realized he was okay, I went on my way. I did make sure to hide my GPSr from his sight as I was afraid it would lead to an hour long discussion about what it is and how it works.
  11. I bought a new GPSr and sold my perfectly functioning Legend Cx to a friend. He took it home and played with it and it worked fine. Then, last night he left it plugged into his iMac via USB and this morning it is DEAD. I called Garmin who is willing to fix or replace for $99 but it is a two year old unit that I sold for $50. I don't think it is worth it. Has anyone had any luck opening these things up and repairing them? I got it open, but frankly it is nothing but a circuit board with a screen, USB port, and micro-SD connectors.
  12. My rule is that if I find it, I count it. That means holding it in my hand and opening it up. I have had a few instances where I wasn't prepared to cache and didn't have a pen/pencil. I figure if I have the log in my hand, that is as good as signing it. Just my opinion, I know others say you have to sign the log to count it.

  14. Congrats on the new addiction! Probably about time to buy a second GPSr and some more maps. This game/sport never stops amazing me at how it can suck time and money. I love it.
  15. All I did was create a new directory C:\Garmin\Topo and copy the contents of each CD to this folder. It puts all the maps into subdirectories for you. Run the setup.exe file from the new directory and it creates the proper registery entries for you. Very simple.
  16. I use a take my Blackberry Curve with me while geocaching and have often used the web browser to log onto geocaching.com to look up cache details to help me in my search. I often find that reading through the log entries can help me out when I'm stuck. The only problems with this are that sometimes I am out of cell tower range and can't get a signal and the browser is cumbersome, though functional. Does anybody know an easy and effective way to download the details of a cache, or better yet a list of caches to a file that can be stored and read on a Blackberry? I see that you can download the cache details along with up to 10 log entries as a PDF. This works okay, but you have to do it one cache at a time. Another option is to use the .gpx file that is my weekly pocket query. All the data is in that file, but the trick is to turn it into a file that I can pull up and read on the blackberry. Better ideas?
  17. As an ex-triathlete and ex-adventure racer (short duration events for both), I have been thinking about this a lot. I am surprised that I haven't seen anything about it on these forums. I know that most of the geocachers I have met wouldn't be into it, but I think there would be a fair number of cachers and off road racers that would be into it. Let me know if you run into anything here or elsewhere about this. I think it could be a great sport.
  18. I just bought a vista hcx to replace my legend cx. I was considering a colorado 400t, but decided I couldn't justify $500 vs. $228 for the vista. I like the size, plus I am already familiar with the button and menu layout. Plus, it uses the same bike mount as the legend. And, it is smaller than the 60. I don't think you can go wrong with either device.
  19. The colorado seems to come close, but I just bought an etrex vista hcx instead. When I pair the vista, and my old legend, with my blackberry I have everything I need for paperless caching. Yeah, two devices but a great combo. My GPSr leads me there, and my blackberry lets me look up the caching on geocaching.com if I need hints from the logs. I can log my finds as I go if I want to. Plus, I can take pictures if I want to upload with my finds.

  21. Also look on forum for Garmin Bobcat. I have almost completely moved from PC to MAC with my Garmin GPS (etrex legend cx and vist hcx) and maps. Bobcat is mapsource for the mac. The only downside is that you have to convert your maps via your PC then transfer them to the mac. This will be changed when they roll out the non-beta Bobcat later this year (assuming). Bobcat works almost as well as mapsource on the PC with two notable exceptions: 1. On the waypoint list all the icons show as a blue flag, not as the icon associated with the waypoint that shows on the map 2. You cannot set the level of detail. As you zoom out you lose level of detail quickly. Most noticeably is the loss of streets on city navigator as you zoom out. Bottom line is that you need a PC to translate your maps, but once you do that you no longer need a PC. And of course, all you do is plug your GPSr into the USB port and the MAC knows what it is - no installing drivers! Hope this helps.
  22. Check out the gps garage sale forum. You can find some used ones cheap. Most the used ones are just fine. A lot of geocachers like to upgrade often, like cyclists.
  23. PCNation is selling the 400t for $487 with no tax and free shipping. That is more than double their price on the etrex vista hcx ($228). But, the colorado is the only unit that I know of that can do these things: 1. 3D rendered topo maps (these are NOT the same US Topo maps we all have with other Garmin units) 2. Wherigo - not sure if this is going to be big or not 3. Uploads all cache info, not just the coordinates 4. Much larger screen than the etrex or gpsmap units 5. Much easier to use according to Garmin tech I talked to 6. Takes full sized SD cards, not micro. You can get a 2GB SD card for almost free (in fact I did get one for free after rebate a few months back through a special offer) Now, the question is are these features worth it TO YOU. I'm still on the fence because they are all "I want it", not "I need it" features for me. Life is full of tough choices. In fact I ordered the etrex vista hcx yesterday but entered my cc info wrong and the order didn't go through. I think I'll take that as an omen to wait and buy the colorado..... I think.
  24. I have one for my etrex lengend and my blackberry curve. $11 for a 10 cent product is kind of a rip off, but once you have it you will not regret the decision. This is by far the best screen saver you will ever own and with the warranty will be the last one you'll ever have to buy. When I got mine on my blackberry, I told my wife it was scratch proof. She immediate slammed the phone screen against the corner of the coffee table multiple times. No scratches, but I can't believe she didn't crack the screen!
