That we can load and unload maps as needed. I have many different mapsets saved within the mapsource program that can be loaded at a moments notice. So if I am going to West Texas I load the areas that I need and go. I am able to switch back to my local area after I get back home. I also use a laptop which means my maps go with me everywhere. In New Zealand and Australia using the laptop and Mapsource realtime tracking saved us a lot of grief, and made the transition to driving on the left side of the road a bit easier. At least we weren't lost!! Also when you get your Mapsource maps turn auto routing off as the legend, and I believe the vista doesn't support in anyway. it will save you a bit of space. I have a good chunk of Texas, The area around LAX, chunks of New Mexico, and Arizona, all of New Zealand and almost all of Victoria Australia in mine. I use Mapsource Topo and World Map. I recently had a trip to Australia and New Zealand, and use the NM and AZ stuff often. he Texas chunks are for around home here. The Legend has more than enough memory for me. I have not seen a significant gain in accuracy by using WAAS. In fact sometimes instead of being within 10 meters or so the accuracy goes out to 30 meters or so using WAAS. Thats with 4 or 5 satelites pegged with d's. At this point I don't see the benefit of WAAS Perhaps after they launch a few more birds it will get better. I considered TOPO and R&R for my needs. I instead went with TOPO and World Map as we have a trip to New Zealand coming up in December and felt it would be nice to at least have the country mapped on my GPS. I think that if you spend a lot of time outdoors then TOPO is what you would really need. During the summer I spend a great deal of time in the mountains and deserts of AZ and the TOPO is what I need to navigate. I want to know what the terrain is like and only TOPO can provide that. I think that R&R would be my second choice for a map set to own. It is more up to date than the basemap and therefore it would be a better tool for traveling. I gotta tell ya that I would never go to some of the places that I go to without at least a map and a compass. Because the GPS is still a new concept I take the map, compass and gps with me when I go to the woods. It's not smart not to take all available resources. I have tried WAAS several times, and on several trips with my legend, and have had lots of those little D's in the power bar and have not seen any improvement. If fact there were a few times when I started out with 10-12 foot accuracy and after turning on the WAAS it jumped up to 30 feet accuracy. Maybe when it jumped up it really did get more accurate. I just haven't seen anything to make it a big seller in my book. It may be my location, but I think it's just a bunch of hype right now! I have the combo cable and wonder if I can have the GPS take power from the cigarette lighter and have the laptop hooked up for real time tracking at the same time. It looks as though I can do this? it really depends on what zoom level you work with. If you don't need the big picture then it should work but if you need detail at a larger scale then it sometimes gets a bit hard to really tell what your lookijng at. I generally print a map out from map source to use in tandem with the GPS. I do believe that I could function with the GPS topo maps alone but they are certainly not the same level that I was used to in the army, or those purchased from USGS. I have found Mapsource software for 76.95 plus $7.00 shipping. That's a few dollars less than $100.00. I have done business with ebay sellers, but I would use caution and always pay with credit card where possible, and before bidding check the sellers feedback for bad comments. If a seller has one or 2 bad comments in 6 months with hundreds of sauction that one thing, but there are many sellers that have 15, 20 or more bad comments and fewer auctions. Those of you placing caches please think before placing them. There ain't a hobby, or a game in the world worth dying for. So lets place em in safe spots. For those of us looking for the caches let's use some common sense. I passed a cache up this summer because some yo-yo placed it on a cliff. I ain't climbing a shear cliff for a happy meal toy! a bug report a week or so ago. Mine does it occasionally when in mod to heavy tree cover. Generally using the "Use with GPS off" and then "Use with GPS on" switch clears it. Please send them a bug report so that htey can at least be made aware of it. You will get a canned answer but they will work on it.
