  1. Yeah what you and KB said. Butttt................. last summer we had two couples from down there near the Kansas/Missouri/Oklahoma area somewhere who had something like 5000 plus caches. Lo and behold they came through our area and logged a bunch of caches. The red lights started flashing when they were stated to be in like 4 states this particular day and had a LOT of caches.. Not that one can't find a lot of caches in several states in one day but it was hokey. Upon checking our logs they had actually only signed something like 3 logs out of 7 or so. The same with other local cache hiders in the area. Upon deleted their unsigned logs they messaged us each time saying they had "forgotten" to sign the log. How does one with so many caches "forget" to sign their logs? I don't really care if they have 10,000 caches right now.. I know when i look at their numbers i see LOTS less. I know if they are in my neighborhood again that they are not trustworthy and I know its the principle of the whole thing. I also know I can wake up in the morning and know i didn't cheat or smudge my numbers and that the cache count you see is my actual cache count found. And I know they are the only ones who have to live with their fake cache numbers. JMHO!! Don't you just love caching? LOL!!
  2. Just so you know, I have only read the first page of posts on this subject and have NOT read further on so if someone else has posted this, I apologize.... Anyways, I was at a cache IN an old junk yard. We never did find this cache and didn't look very long. We were stumbling (literally) over broken bottles and rusty broken cans. I walked away and told hubby if he wanted to find this cache so bad, he was on his own. As I recall, he followed me out of that place. Ha!! Laurie
  3. I absolutely LOVE cemetery caches, when I don't have to enter the cemetery to find the cache. I think its totally disrespectful to have a cache within the cemetery and the one in the vase would have taken the cake. I can't believe someone was so tactless to do that. I love cemeteries and have no problems with them at all. Just be respectful and keep your caches outside the cemetery. I think its cool to go inside a cemetery to maybe find a hint on a headstone or whatever but not to literally put the cache inside the cemetery. JMHO!!! Laurie
  4. That is just unreal that they won't let you put a cache in. We have a few of them along I29 and I90 down here in Sioux Falls area. I didn't ask for permission at all. They are the hottest caches we have as far as getting cache hits. Its great to see people getting out and stretching along the way of these long trips. I am originally from ND and we will be on our way up to Minot in a few weeks. I have thought of putting a cache or two in the Minot area as that is where I lived. I have a son in law and daughter who could maintain it. Even in Minot it doesn't seem like there are a huge amount of caches and the new ones come along few and far apart. I would encourage all bigger cities in ND to just start putting caches around in the areas surrounding your cities......Bismarck, Minot, Grand Forks, Fargo. We take a trip to Fargo probably 4 times a year to meet the kids for a weekend. We would gladly find these caches.

    sent pm too......yeahhhhh!!!!
  6. Hey we may be going up to ND (Minot) for Thanksgiving. If someone doesn't put a cache there by then we can surely do it. We even have a son in law who can maintain it when it needs to be maintained.
  7. This comes up all the time in this forum. Please read the FAQ, especially the section "I found a benchmark, but it isn't in your database. Why?" -ArtMan- so you know what? just forget it. you all in this group are a silly bunch. this is the 2nd time i have posted on this forum and the last time. the first time i had people fighting in the post and then individually emailing me telling me so and so was right and so and so was wrong. The second time i am directed to a FAQ. Its like working in a freakin school yard with a bunch of 4th grade girls. Forget i asked.

  9. Here's a few benchmarks I have run across that I can't locate:
  10. We had recently went on vacation and the night before we left we had heard that there was an update for mapsource. Well, we hook up one of our gpsr units to our laptop and follow along using our laptop as our gps while on the road. Then when we get to a cache site, obviously we unhook the gpsr and use that. But anyways, we now noticed the next day when at our destination that the new mapsource no longer at the GPS tracking? And of course hubby did not bring along the old mapsource installation cd. So we couldn't use Mapsource at all? Why did they take away the GPS tracking on the upgrade? We thought this was a silly move as isn't this one of the biggest points of mapsource besides the great topo's? And maybe its just something we don't have checked but believe me, i checked the mapsource help file and could find NOTHING about the GPS tracking. Does anyone know anything about this? We luckily had my new inspiron laptop with which i had just purchased using streets and maps with a receiver I got with that package. Is there anyway you can get good topo maps for like mapsource uses for streets and trips? I really liked S & T but it just wasn't as good (topo wise) as mapsource. Thanks in advance for your answers.
  11. Hmmm never seen that before. Have been at the geographical center of the world in Rugby ND many times. They say that technically THAT is not even the geographical center anymore because of the shifting of the earth. So....maybe its in Belle Fouche now. HA HA.....glad to hear you didn't go to far out of your way. That sign says Nation....must mean something huh? LOL!!
  12. We have done two in our area. They are really a hoot. The one we did in a town park which was fairly easy. We used firetacks. We stuck them in trees probably about 6 ft up. If you don't know about them you won't see them in the light. These firetacks worked great. The other one we did at an out of door preserve. On a really cool trail that leads through the trees through this preserve. I really like this one but because these night caches are new, people from this small area are not checking them out really well. I think they are intimidated by them. For this cache we used reflector pins bought at a local wally world. They worked pretty good but are not nearly as nice as the firetracks. We didn't use any tape accept on the final cache. For this one we placed the tacks up as high on trees (mostly) as we could. Some ended up on logs down low also. Good luck on your night cache. They are fun to put up and fun to get.
  13. That doesn't even make sense to me. I am the owner of a waymark, and if i am an owner of the waymark then that means i was at the location of the waymark which means I am going to log that i was there. You shouldn't be making a waymark if you weren't even there anyways. Anyone can pick a park from the internet, look at Google earth and pull up the coords and then find an internet picture and make a waymark. Thats cheating. But when you make a waymark it means you were there. And beings you were there you LOG it as such. Before or after the waymark is approved. Who cares. If it isn't approved, well you spent an extra 22 seconds to write about your visit and its not going to be seen. And you have to log a visit in order for it to be added to your stats. Thats the way it is. Waymarks are meant to be fun......so have fun!!!
  14. OK so you all have your opinions and have shared with me what you believe this marker is. You still really haven't answered my questions. HOW do you figure out from benchmarks what they are when it doesn't actually say PID on it or give a station name. And other than being a rocket scientist or a real live survey person how the heck does one understand these data sheets? But I did go back and read the data sheet (for the 10th time) and at the end of the description is describes this marker. And on PR0977 it says Azimuth Marker. I now understand that the datasheet originally started out as describing a station but then went into describing this same exact marker that i found. So I found this marker but can't post it anywhere? Because this is just a benchmark which points to the station? I love looking for these benchmarks because its a real challenge but i already have a whole handful of them i don't know what to do with or where to post them because no one has really given me an answer yet. How on earth did you find CO9329 OAKWOOD LAKE AZ MK 2, GH55?? And yes your right. That fits the description well. But even looking under the station name and doing a datasheet search for it on the NGS website i still didn't come up with that. And what on that marker indicates to you what to search for that you came up with that? I have markers that say geodetic survey on them and i have one that says geological survey on it. Whats the difference? Do I post them as finds on benchmarks on gc.com? I can't find the CO9329 OAKWOOD LAKE AZ MK 2 on gc.com to post it. Thats the question that newbies like me need to know when coming to this site. I thought thats what this forum was for? Anyways, thanks for all the help. Ahead of time. Laurie
  15. I am just trying to get my bearings about this whole benchmark situation and after finding a marker that was presumed destroyed, that really fouled me up. LOL!! Hey this is geomom SoDak Searcher not geodad SoDak Searcher. So there is a difference between the two? And the geodetic survey markers are the ones that you log on benchmarks at gc.com? And the Geological Survey markers and other misc. ones are logged at Waymarking.com on recovered benchmarks? Plus? Is this benchmarking site on gc.com updated regularly or is it never updated? Because I would think there would be updates to the National Geodetic Surveys database occassionally such as for any new markers they may have found or markers they thought were destroyed and such. Thanks in advance for any answers.
  16. Hey you all have been a great help and I did log this as a find because all signs lead me to believe it is the right marker. But the bottom line on the NGS page says this: PR0977'RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 2001 (DB) PR0977'THIS STATION WAS VERIFIED DESTROYED BY MNDT. Its been verified as destroyed when actually it wasn't. So where do i go from here with the info? Lucky find huh? LOL!!
  17. I found a benchmark that the coords are like a mile off. The benchmark itself does not list a PID. But there is only one listed by this name and the dates seem to match up? I posted it as this benchmark and then Put the coords and description on it is this the right thing to do? http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=PR0977
  18. Hi all, I created a North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa category to add your historical markers on at Waymarking.com Get out there and take those pics, get those cords and post them under the right state!!
  19. subcategories? I would like to add a subcategory under religious buildings called Country Churches. Those little country churches out in the middle of no where that you see while out tooling around in the country. They may be active or not active but they HAVE to be extemely rural. NOT in a town. There might be a farm nearby but not IN a city or town. thanks!
  20. Thats cool, thanks for the opinions. It would really have to be defined as those three catagories above. I would love to add that it must be dated over 100 years old but lots of places in the United States are barely that old. In europe that wouldn't be a problem though. OK on with this idea. Thanks again.
  21. OK I am new to this but was told by a friend to propose my new catagory on these forums because you all are very informative and can be a huge help to me. I would like to do a category called "Cornerstones". I have searched in the directory and did not come up with a category on these? Just let me know if I am somehow duplicating a category. IF not, here is some info I found on cornerstones: copy and pasted from http://www.freemason.org/cfo/winter_2002/corner.htm ************************** The tradition goes back to antiquity - so far that it literally cannot be traced to its origins, and it probably evolved out of the foundation and completion sacrifices which were common with any large building project (and which are echoed in the legend of the Master Mason Degree). In Babylon, clay cylinders, called "timmon" were insciribed with the history of the king and of the building, and buried in the foundations of the structure. Clay tablets describing the building and the history of the king were buried in the floors of the buildings erected by Darius and Cyrus. During the construction of the cathedrals of the Middle Ages, special stones, hollowed to receive offerings, were included in the foundations of the walls. Thus, from the remotest times, the laying of a special stone, usually sealing in a deposit intended for future generations, has been a part of any significant building. Although the terms are often used interchangeably, there are actually three major classifications of such stones. FOUNDATION STONES are the first stones placed as part of the foundation of a building (or, in the case of most of the medieval cathedrals, the high altar). These stones are below the level of the ground. The stone George Washington laid for the nation's capital was actually a foundation stone, as is clearly shown by the newspaper accounts of the time. CORNER STONES are the first stones placed at ground level. They are generally placed in the northeast corner, from which building traditionally commenced. They are part of the structure of the building, and, of necessity, are placed before the building is built. Until the 1950s and 60s, this was the type of stone most commonly placed by the fraternity. COMMEMORATIVE or DEDICATORY STONES are the stones most commonly placed by the fraternity today. They are not part of the structure of the building, but fit into a space left in the stone or brick work. They usually seal a cavity in which a "time capsule" type of deposit is made. Generally, the placement of such a stone is the last act in the building and serves as a dedication of the building and a signal of its completion. The association of Masonry with the placement of corner stones is obvious and comes from the craft guilds. There are records of Masonic Lodges in Ireland placing corner stones, with full parades and ceremonies, dating from the 1500s and records from England from the late l600s. Apparently, the first stones in Washington, D.C. which were placed by Lodges with Masonic ceremonies were not those in federal buildings at all, but those which marked the boundaries of the District of Columbia. ******************************** A category with most any kinds of the above cornerstones would be cool. This is a category that anyone all over the world can get and is part of our history. thanks. Laurie I do have a picture of a cornerstone if anyone wants to see it.
  22. Yeah I had GSAK and so does my husband who uses it religiously on his computer. I will have to download it again and just get used to it. I was lost with all the pocket queries and such so I need to be more patient. LOL!! Thanks for all the replies...i appreciate it. I still wish they would just make the website clickable headings that ascend/descend and oldest date/newest date, and things like that. Would be so much easier. LOL!!
  23. Well thats not what i wanted to hear. i wanted to hear that soon they will be coming up with a new way to search so you can do this endlessly without having to generate all these reports all the time. LOL! Thanks for the reply!
  24. Hey I love the site. found the geocaching info on the web about 5 years ago but never persued it again until just recently. What a fun sport for the whole entire family to participate in. Thanks! On to my question. On geocaching.com is there an option somewhere where one can search for like updated caches or caches recently placed? It would be great to be able to put in your zip code (which i know you can do) and then bring up your local caches but then be able to sort them by either when they were placed, or the newest cache placed or the latest person to find a cache. I find it really tedious to have to go through all the cache listings sometimes to just find ones i haven't been too and i live in a relatively small town which is just gettins started with geocaching. I would love to be able to do a search for caches that are new....or recently visited or even to find the oldest to the youngest. Oh and I am a premium member. I know that matters with the search options. Thanks for any info. Laurie
