  1. Only been caching since June '06 but been looking forward to things beyond poison ivy and ticks... The mild winter in the northeast has delayed that experience until now. Bitter cold was the first challenge and, today for the first time, SNOW contributed to the FUN. We had snowmoblies and nordic skiers along with the two foot snow drifts to contend with. We found the cache but it was frozen in place so it took some extra effort to extract it. It offered a welcomed and new perspective to the game. Of course, I'd feel differently if we didn't actually find the prize... Cachedowncrew
  2. I plan to send mine on its way this weekend to Londonderry, UK (Ireland). This was asked before but I didn't see an answer - has, or is anyone planning to attach anything to their bug? It seems that it would be less likely to be dropped and lost that way...
  3. Accuracy is an issue (about 150') but most of the US and parts of Asia and Europe are covered. Here's a list of LORAN-C chains throughout the world. I also forgot to mention orienteering. Edit: I just learned about this the other day. Accurate location without GPS (great for urban caching...)
  4. I'd find other reasons to get outside - just plain hiking? How about the predecessor to GPS, LORAN-C? Dust off all those old LORAN receivers...
  5. The weather should be fine tomorrow so I suggested to the Crew that we shoot into Beantown to chase a few caches. We've never cached in the city... My youngest asks, with a cynical grin, "don't we have to be careful about the muggles?? What a Wiesenheimer!! That's my boy!
  6. It is kind of corny and when I first used it out loud, my 10 year old laughed and teased me about it. He now uses it as sort of an inside joke for a lot of things. Come to think of it, isn't geocaching sort of an inside joke? While on the subject of odd terms, I used the word "dungarees" to refer to my son's jeans the other night and he looked at me like I had two heads. My wife promptly informed him that dungaree is a word that old people use... "Hey, look at the muggle wearing dungarees."
  7. I've only been caching for a few months but I noticed in the logs of a cache I wanted to find, several notes about its container leaking and so I picked up a new container on the way to the cache and swapped them.
  8. I would very much like to read this step by step article. Will this be the same article posted in Today's Cacher? .. .. My dog will track the trail and sometimes circle the base of the tree where the cache is hidden. Just haven't gotten her to be consistent... She is usually pre-occupied with all the other smells.. Yes. If you email me at JC364@aol.com I'll send you a copy of the article. El Diablo My black lab has sniffed out 2 or 3 caches so far. It might have been coincidence but I don't think so. I'd like a copy of the article as well and will email you. Thanks!
  9. Hello, I am a newbie and was concerned about the accuracy of my Etrex Legend CX after my first few finds. However, I have since found it to be extemely accurate. Went caching with a friend who has a Magellen and we were showing almost the exact same coordinates. I'm not sure of the timeline but I upgraded the firmware via garmen.com at one point so maybe that made a difference. In any event, I'm seeing 20-30 feet accuracy at worst.

  11. Hi, I use GSAK on my laptop and cachemate on my iPAQ ppc. Aftger installing GSAK to your PC, go into GC.com and configure a pocket query. Make sure you select .gpx format and have the PQ sent to your email. You will receive a zip file attachment. There is a problem with opening zipped .gpx files if you are running Windows XP on your PC. If you are, click and drag the zip file from your email to your desktop. Then open GSAK and click and drag the zip file over to it. GSAK automatically unzips the file and populates the database with all of the cache information. In GSAK, select file/export/GPX/LOC File. There should be a path showing in the "file name to create" field that leads to your PPC document folder. Click on generate and you should have it in cachemate. Open cachemate and in the upper right corner there is a dropdown menu. Select "All" and the list should come up. I had a heck of a time getting this myself but finally figured it out yesterday with help form these forums... It sound more complicated than it actuall is Good Luck!
  12. I have an etrex legend cx (same as vista w/o the electronic compass and altimeter). We've only been out a few times so far but it seems fairly accurate. I admit I get concerned when I read all of the threads questioning the accuracy of the etrex line... I am left handed so I like the "left-handedness" of the unit.
  13. I think you're trying to download from the preview page. To get batch GPX data, it can only be emailed to you, not downloaded. (You can download a GPX file for a single cache from the cache page.) You need to make sure you've selected an email address for it to be sent to, select GPX as the file type, and most importantly, you have to select a day for the PQ to run. If you want it immediately, set it for the current day. It should arrive in you email box within 15 minutes (usually faster, sometimes slower). I think you nailed it. I was trying to download from the preview page. I entered an "alternate" email address and am waiting for it to arrive. Thanks very much for your help! OK, zipped gpx files (pocket queries) are apparently "corrupted" when opened in Windows XP so I dragged the zipped file to my desktop and then dragged it into GSAK and, it worked!! Last part - what are the steps to getting the files from GSAK to cachemate? I've tried to export gpx files but it isn't working and I'm not sure of the steps involved. Thanks to everyone for your help with this!

  15. Hi, Whenever I try to download waypoint PQs to GSAK, the only option given is to download them as .loc files. I am, ahem , a premium member, and select .gpx files when I set up the PQ. What am I doing wrong??
  16. Thank you ThreeTrees. Isn't the PDB extension for Palm PDAs? Mine is Windows based... When I tried export the file, I got an error message saying "unable to find instapp.exe for automatic installation to palm."
  17. Hi, I have GSAK on my laptop, Cachemate on my PDA (iPAQ rx3115). I loaded a record into GSAK as a test. How do I get it into Cachemate?? My kids gave me the iPAQ a couple of years ago but I never had a real use for it until now but I'm going crazy with trying to get it all to work!
