  1. Which part are you having the problem with? Exporting the GPX file, moving to the HTC or importing it into Cachemate? You know they are 3 seperate steps I assume?
  2. I might use that line on a log when we go abroad later this year for a laugh.
  3. You may have a lot to do, but at least they are all most definitely in South Wales. Until we get the overlay it's going to be impossible to categorize several of ours. Living with a mile or two of three divisions certainly doesn't help either. We have a couple of caches straddling the English / Welsh border, so that'll be fun. Let's hope they gets put back precisely by each finder.
  4. Well, for a start, Groundspeak probably doesn't have complete (metre-level) polygons for every state in every subdivided country. Surely that is exactly what is required to implement this change properly. I'm not sure the polygons would have to be to metre-level. Most of the boundaries are ficticious anyway, so that part would be simple. A huge number of caches still don't have additional waypoints after well over 2 years, so I don't share your confidence as much as I admire it. The difference here is that if any listings are not updated it renders filtering by state completely useless. When I run a PQ I need to know I'm going to get all the caches in the area for that PQ, not just the ones that have been updated.
  5. I'm missing something major here. For starters, why are these states not assigned automatically by the web site so that a standard is ahered to and all listings are updated? Or is this the next phase?
  6. No problems here with the CSx either. Works like a dream, providing you adhere to the points above.
  7. It's dead easy. The GPSr works when you fire up an application which uses it. i.e. Memory Map, Tom Tom etc. Just make sure you have the GPS config settings correct within the app (Com4:, 4800) and it will fly. QuickGPS just pulls satellite positions for the next week from the Internet, so you get a very fast aquisition time. If you don't have a GPS app and just want to test it there are plenty of free noddy apps at freewarepocketpc.net
  8. Good luck to all of you. I think you're mad - but good luck anyway. Note to self: Get shares in Radox very quickly.
  9. This practise does go on unfortunately, though it is rare in in my experience. But this cache sounds fine. We have also DNF'd a cache that turned out to be several hundreds of feet out - but not intentionally. The cache was by no means new at the time either, but has since been archived.
  10. Do the Copy&Paste generation know what a carbon copy is these days? Also, it's very easy to say "just put it on your ignore list", but it's just not that easy for the addicted.
  11. It has been suggested, but the WAP portal doesn't appear to be a priority for gc.com unfortunately.
  12. If you have a mobile phone with Internet access then you're already there. Of course there's the forthcoming Garmin Oregon too.
  13. Hmm... too bad. For quite a few caches in my area you need some info from an image ... sometimes for the puzzle, sometimes as a spoiler picture, or sometimes it's just nice for background information on the area. Do the images get downloaded with GPX files at all? (if no, then cachemate or any other program can't help in any case). You can get spoiler pics on a PocketPC by using Spoilersync. You could use it to get other pics too, though that is not it's intended use. Use this in conjunction with the Spoilersync Cachemate plug-in (PocketPC only).
  14. I just wanted to agree with most of PP's points. I also use a TyTN II. Casual caching is brilliant with it. If I'm on a business trip I'm ready to go and I'll always have it with me for all of the other functionality I use every day, like phone, MS Office, Calendar etc. I don't find batteries a problem on a long trip because I carry a battery extender, which runs off AA batteries. The camera (3.1MP) will do in an emergency, but that's about it. I have an aluminium case to protect my TyTN whilst caching. I upgraded from a Palm for 5 main reasons: 1. To run Memory Map 2. Internet access 3. A single caching device (that hasn't really proved practical) 4. Wherigo player 5. To run TomTom. I far prefer using a dedicated GPSr when caching more seriously even though the PDA/phone can do everything. Also, our area has poor 2G coverage and no 3G coverage, so you can't rely on on-line listings.
  15. It's no longer a rumour. Garmin have it on their website. For sale Q3 2008.
  16. I had a TB go missing as soon as it hit the Czech Republic. Looks like it was picked up by a newbie who lost interest. The problem is that he doesn't speak English. I've also contacted the cache owner asking for some assistance as a translator. Guess what. He doesn't speak English either. Another of our geocoins is also in the Czech republic despite it's mission clearly stating it wants to stay in the UK.
  17. I use a Garmin GPSmap60 CSx. It does not support Memory Map. Garmin only support their proprietary maps, such as Topo. I do use Memory Map on my PC and on a PPC (PDA). If you don't have a PPC it is still a very useful tool for planning routes. Routes, Waypoints and Tracks can be transfered (in either direction) between the CSx and the PC. Before I had a PPC I would upload my route from MM to the CSx and then print off the map section. Although Topo GB is pretty good (a very different product to the US Topo), it can't compare to MM for mapping detail. The other major difference is that Topo GB is routing and MM is not. Specific licenses are required for use with a PPC and for printing.
  18. Hands up! This thread has been hi-jacked. Keep an eye on eBay. Another option is a used copy. You can get a free second license from Garmin (just say you're upgrading your unit). Make sure it's a pucker DVD copy though and that only one license has been used if you do this. Check with Garmin first if you are unsure about this.
  19. Are there any sailings that go to Steep Holm and Flat Holm on the same trip?
  20. Walkers here tend to use the British Grid Reference (or National Grid). This explains it for kids, which I know often helps me. It's a very simple system.
  21. A friend is having an event (non geocaching) coming up which she wishes to promote play in the forest for kids. As I liaised with her to create The Sculpture Trail multicache (which is where the event is) which she would like to get kids to do the cache. Most of the cache can be done with a map and no GPSr, but the final find requires a GPSr. She may be able to get a loan of several PPC's, but will need some s/w to get them to the final co-ords. While I use Memory Map and Cachemate, she obviously doesn't want to spend the cash for several PPC's which are going to get used once only. Listings will be printed. Which free s/w would you recommend to navigate to the final co-ords in the standard gc.com format (deg, min).
  22. I know a cacher in Wiltshire (who doesn't visit the forums) who has recently had two ammo boxes disappear. Almost certainly an inside job apparently. I know he's understandably not going to use them any more.
